We took the side off DS cot 2weeks ago last Saturday. And it still takes over an hour of constant returning to bed before he will settle and sleep. Just wondering what other peoples experiences had been with this, and how they coped etc.???? I am feeling really tired already but this seems to be making it worse.

Hi Bex
When we put Ruby in her bed we just put pillows on the floor in case she fell out and we would do normal bedtime routine, then into bed and we shut the door and left her ( that sounds so mean !!!) She only got out the first few nights and is good now. Although she has learnt to thump the wall and knows we will come to check her

Yes we thought about this but Alex can open the door, so we would have to stand there and hold it closed or put a lock on it (makes me think prison). But if it goes on too much longer I think we might have to. -------------

Maybe he's too young to understand the concept and he may not be ready just yet.
I didn't put mine into beds until they were nearly 2.. but in saying that some people have had success with younger ones. For your sanity and his, put the cot side back up for another month or two. ------------- Mr Mellow (16) Miss Attitude (8) Destructa Kid (3)

The reason we took it off was that he was almost climbing out, and I was scared of him falling. He is much better when I put him down for his day sleep, maybe put him back 5 times at most, but night times are a different story. I wonder if it is because daddy is home and he wants to play lol.

Do you have a safety gate you can put across the bedroom door? So even if he opens it he can't come out of the room? I have friends that do that here because they have sleep walking toddlers  They put the gate up after they shut the door at bedtime.------------- SJ Callum - Dec 2008 Daniel - Oct 2010 |

We seem to have solved the problem. DH did it after I burst into tears the other night. He shut the door, and because he can open it locked it with the broom. Sounds terrible, but after 10 min he went back in and put him back in bed and he didn't get out again.
Now a week later we still put broom under when he goes down, and most of the time he knows now and doesn't even get out of bed. Obviously once he is asleep we take the broom out so when he wakes in morning he can get out.
I feel like my sanity has been restored, and hopefully in a couple of weeks we may not even need the broom.YAY -------------

I'm so glad to hear that is has been solved for you. SLeep is such a major at the best of time but when prgnant aswell it so hard to get.
I was reading this eagerly as I'm going to be taking my boy out of his cot soon as he is starting to pull it apart piece by piece. Its an old cot and he can pull the bars out now and his jumping in it is starting to break the base. Family cot may have seen its last child I think. Not bad for a cot that is 50+ years old. i wish we had this in a way - Ella is in a bed now - never climbed out of cot etc...and wont get out of bed now! at 7am this morn she finally got to her door to come see where the parents were....lazy toad
