There is something nagging me about Ayja over the last week or so.
She usually drinks a fair amount, we have a drink bottle for each girl available for them to sip throughout the day. However in the last week or so, she has begun waking during the night 4+ times for drinks, and she skulls it back furiously each time. I am forever having to refill her drink bottle at the moment as it always seems empty. The drink bottle is one of the twist top ones you can get that have the different pics available on them, so holds 450ml. It was full at bedtime last night. I got up a couple of times to her once i got home from work. Mike got up to her as well and next time i went back to her he'd filled it up again about 5am. She woke up really late this morning - 9am (wakes usually before 6am) and came to me just after asking for more water as the drink bottle was empty again. Usually she would wake at 2am nearly every night, but that is only once, this is getting really silly, she's genuinely thirsty as is happy as larry to settle back once she's had a good drink. She's off her meals, doesn't eat half as much as usual (however with all that water i suspect she's full!) she eats brekkie, lunch is so-so, then dinner is maybe 1 or 2 bites before not wanting anymore, no matter what it is. she is complaining of headaches, and gets really upset at loud noises at the moment, she is also saying her tummy is sore alot. Her breath in the mornings is very sweet acetone smelling. This is ringing off in my head as something i should really get checked as there are a few ideas in my head of what it could be, but i feel that maybe having some nursing knowledge i am over-reacting. opinions people. other nursies, tell me, am i over-reacting or do i go with my instincts and get her checked out. I would trust your instinct. Getting her checked over by the GP can't hurt. The only thing that excessive thirst says to me is possibly diabetes? (and that ties in with the ketone-breath thing too....)  -------------

She's not well, that's for certain, but it could be a hundred different things. The sore tummy would explain the wanting to drink and perhaps off-feed, the drinking so much would explain the off-feed too. Is she weeing as often as usual? With that much water at night one would expect a large number of toilet stops as well. And of course that will mean she's not sleeping as well as she ought to be.
Is her tummy bloated? Is she constipated? She may just have a bug (or will come down in a virus in a couple of days) or it could also be a food issue. On that note, you never got yourself checked for gluten, did you? But if there is any intolerance in the family that's probably the first stop for ruling out. -------------  |

Blondy that's what i was worrying about too, it wasn't until I commented in another thread about drinking that I realised how much i had noticed Ayja drinking while on holiday - which is when it seemed to start, and yes the excessive toilet stops too. during the day she doesn't go lots and lots, but definately more than usual, and usually goes for a long long time. since then it's just gotten worse, with more frequent night waking, she still wears a night nappy which is always very wet in the mornings at the mo, she tends to wake us for a drink as she doesn't like the dark, so even though the drink bottle is next to her bed, she will usually call us.

| It may be nothing but it would be better to trust your instincts and check it out. As you say those are the signs of diabetes and thats not one you want to miss. Good luck. hope its nothing but a phase. |

I just spoke to DH. He has been a type 1 diabetic since he was 4. He definitely thinks you should get her checked out. A lot of what you described is similar to what he experienced back then. Not saying for sure that she has developed diabetes but I would definitely get her checked, if not for peace of mind. ------------- http://lilypie.com">

Thanks guys, am watching her for tomorrow and taking her to docs either mon or tuesday, depending on what she's up to. Planning to have a talk to daycare to see if they have noticed anything as well. will keep you posted. ------------- Janine and her 2 cool chicks, Paris & Ayja

It seems to have miraculously dissapeared, is back to right, not overly thirsty and not waking anymore. If it occurs again, I will be straight there. ------------- Janine and her 2 cool chicks, Paris & Ayja
