Hi there

I've just found out I'm pregnant and have been given a list as long as my arm of midwives in Wellington - help!

I'm wondering if anyone has any recommendations - its my first baby so not entirely sure what I'm looking for in a midwife, but someone really nice would be a good start (and patient as I have a million questions!).

If anyone has any recommendations and could perhaps PM me that would be fantastic.

Thanks for your help!!

I have gone with Margaret Hadley from Capital City Midwives - they are based in Karori. I initially enquired through Dominos but I have to say I didn't find them good at all in the fact that they take your details and then say they will be in touch in a few weeks, well that wasn't reassuring enough for me. They prioritise home births/ water births and people who have used them before, so I was last on the list. Its been 3 weeks since I enquired ad no-one has got back to me. So I went straight to Margaret as I knew someone who had used her, she made me an appointment straight away, and gave me all the info and bloods/scan documents. She has been a midwife for 30 years, so she is well experienced and easy going. She is already booked up for this year (I think) - she only takes 6 per month. She also does acupuncture for free!

Just to clarify - when I say I think she is booked up for this year - its for babies due this year - if you are due Jan then she may be available.

I was with Domino Midwives before I moved to CHCH and I thought they were great too! Almost made me not want to move so I didn't have to change midwives!

But I guess it totally depends on what sort of person you are and what sort of birth experience you want. I wanted to try for a natural birth, and have the option of using the birthing pool (and have a midwife who was experienced with that) so they worked really well for me.

I'm sure Dominos are good midwives - I just was unimpressed with their communication. I even went to the coffee morning to meet them and express interest, and they said I should look elsewhere aswell. I was trying to get in early, but I like certainty and don't like to be left hanging.
