Sorry girls for all the questions lately - I am newly pregnant so I am a quiver of excitement!!!!
I normally dye my hair - foils actually... and so I'm at a great loss as to what to do since I know it's something you're not meant to do when you are pregnant. My natural hair colour is dark, and I have been putting blonde highlights with lowlights foils in for years and years so it will look DREADFUL if I just leave it.
What CAN you do? If I leave the regrowth for quite some time (esp after my 12 weeks mark) and then get them to dye it to match my natural regrowth colour will it be safe since it won't be dying it close to my scalp? Or is it just all unsafe being around or near or the risk of the chemicals touching my skin?? I don't want to do anything that's really risky. But don't want to look like a horrible pregnant hideous thing.

Hi newlywed, everyone has loads of questions when they first become pregnant so feel free to ask away. I am not sure what others do but I have continued to have my hair dyed throughout my entire pregnancy (foils only) as they do not make contact with the scalp (or so I am told by my hairdresser). The only problem I encountered was feeling a bit seedy when having my hair done in the first trimester due to the chemical smell. I recommend you do heaps of reading (books and internet) you can never be too informed during pregnancy. Good luck

I just coloured my hair last night some of you might frown at me for this but I asked my doctor when I first got preg and he said it's actually not dangerous at all. I do mine just a solid coulour so I make sure I'm in a really well vetilated room...I trust my doc he is wonderful he said it's not on long enough to be absorbed into the body

From what I know, if you want to get foils they should be perfectly safe as they don't touch the scalp.

My OB said that to dye my hair would be okay but that it's better to wait until after the 12 week mark due to the fact that up to that time the most important organs are being formed by the baby. She said the minimal amount of chemicals that would get inside me from my head shouldn't affect bubs at all. So I did wait and in saying that did end up with a headache for a day or two after using the dye but I couldn't be sure whether it was from the dye or just a normal headache.

My hair grew super slow during my pregnancy and I didn't need touch ups until near the end, I had foils done just before my baby shower. My hairdresser was really careful not to let the dye touch my scalp. The only thing I found was that I was sitting there for so long, I got really tired (almost dropping off to sleep) and I was STARVING so maybe take a snack or two with ya

I dyed mine throughout my last and will do the same with this one too. My doctor said it was fine (and DD is fine so it didn't do any damage there!)

I have foils also. I had an app when 8wks pg and it was awful, really fumey and I felt really sick (and having a stupid hairdresser did not help) I have changed hairdressers and found a really careful, preggy aware girl she was super careful not to get any near my scalp and didn't use tint or toner.
I am trying to leave it as long as possible, 8-9wks I would have normally been going every 6wks. Just make sure your hairdresser realises how important it is to you that they are very careful my first one just thought I was a pain in the ass!

I have been getting my foils done throughout my pregnancy too. I just ask the hairdresser not to go too close to the scalp.
Hair is pretty much dead once its out of your head so its really only chemicals touching the scalp that you could be concerned about.

Thanks girls, I really appreciate it! My doctor was vague today, and I really want to do everything right. The hairdresser I spoke to today didn't seem to realise it was the chemicals I was worried about... a lot of unknowledgeable hairdressers out there by the sounds of things. So really important you get someone who knows about these things I think.
But she did suggest either semi-permanent or foils. So I will go and talk to them again after my 12 weeks :) Thank you!

I read an article that stated the whole "don't dye your hair whilst pregnant" scenario came about from a study that was done quite some years ago. The woman in the study all worked at hair salons and therefore amongst harsh chemicals and on their feet all day, hence the high percentage of miscarriages by these woman. the article stated that it does not actually affect those siting in the chair once every couple of months or so. I know you can not trust everything you read but i thought it was very interesting.

Hi, I got my dyed - I didn't know I was pregnant and bubs is fine. Mid way thru I had it done again but only the foils not really the regrowth as such (sorry this sounds vague) my hairdresser was pregnant too and said she wouldn't do anything but foils. How many of our mum's dyed there hair when pregnant with us and we are all fine?? I think sometimes with the pregnancy (or just after) the colours can be a little different as well. Like the others say just ask, ask ask.

I bleached my hair whilw pregnant with Caden, and then went back brown, then red....I dyed it A LOT lol and he is fine and dandy!
VERY little of the colour goes into your skin, the only thing you want to make sure of is that you have lots of air cos it can be smelly and make you feel a bit yuck but thats it.
All the stories about how colouring your hair while pregnant being oh so bad, are false as(ive done hairdressing and my mother is a hairdresser )

I was wondering the same thing, so its good to see how everyone still pretty much has, and been all good.
I havent actually dyed my hair for ages, Used to do the at home jobs... I was put off by a 60 minutes story bout an 16 year old girl (first time dying her hair) and without doing a test patch (which I must admit never used to do) and she had brought a bad batch which resulted in most of head being burnt, really badly eaten into, and half the side of her face..
the image shocked me that much that I haven't brought any since!!!!
But I would go to a hairdresser, niiiiiiice head massage mmmmmmm

As I understand in this case it is quite safe to http://motherhow.com/can-you-dye-your-hair-during-pregnancy/" rel="nofollow - dye your hairs.
