Hi ladies, I am starting IUI next cycle and keen to hear any stories - I know nothing!
Brief on me. Got preg Nov 2007 whilst on BCP, miscarried at 11 wks. Long, painfull, mistreated miscarriage that needed a 2nd D&C 4 months later. got BFP month after but mc at 5 wks. Since then no BFP despite 4 cycles of clomid. Each clomid cycle they have reduce the medication - started on 50mg and last cycle was 12.5mg, each cycle I have produced a minimum of 4 follicals so have been told not to try - but we have! DH has perfect swimmers and nothing wrong with me at all - so just very frustrating!!! My specialist said i can do IUI with clomid 12.5mg. If I have more than 3 follicals they will do a process called reduction - ie reduce follicals so I only have 2 or 3 (apparently a painfull proceedure!). Specialist also offered us IVF - but that just seems a step to far for me at the mo. Specialist also said that as I react very very well (he has only ever seen a couple of women react so strongly to such low clomid) that I would run a risk of hyper...something! which could make me very very sick, due to all the medication they put you on for IVF, as I obviously react very well and sensitive! Anyway, am about CD 22 so AF due next weekend and then we will begin the IUI - would love to hear anyone going through this, been through this etc.
Sorry for the long message!

Hi Bree

We are just starting first IVF cycle after two unsuccessful IUI cycles. We have unexplained infertility and 6 months of low dose clomid (25mg) produced one good follicle but no BFP.

We did IUI thru Fert Assoc in Wgtn and we found them excellent. They are great at explaining the steps to you and most days I got a call from them explaining what to do next (blood test, or take drugs that night etc).
I took 50mg clomid and then each cycle also did a couple of FSH (puregon) injections at low dose plus I also had the trigger injection 36 hours before treatment. Each cycle produced two really good follicles. The treatment itself was not as bad as I was expecting - like a smear test in that you are in stirrups and they use a speculum - they insert the spermies using a very narrow catheter - all over in about 15 mins!
We initally wanted to go straight to IVF because the success rates for IUI are not very high (20% for first cycle, 15% for 2nd cycle and I think10% for thrid cycle), but our specialist convinced us to do IUI first because unsuccessful cycles count towards govt funding points for IVF.
Even though it didn't work, I think it was a good stepping stone for us to IVF - some of the injectibles used for IUI are the same as for IVF, and the embryo transfer for IVF is pretty much the same as the IUI treatment except with a longer catheter.

Hope this is useful. Good luck!

Hi Bree,
We just did our first IUI yesterday!
We have been ttc for nearly 2 years, been on clomiphene for 1 year approx and came off it to have an operation last nov. fixed up some scarring, tried natural for 3 months and no luck so trying IUI now. it was stressful leading up to it as was waiting for the LH surge and it was typically 3 days late and on a sunday lunchtime so we thought we might miss out as too late for monday but the timing worked well and it was done yesterday morning. it was a piece of cake, just like a smear as loubee said, nice and easy and over in 15 mins. Now we face the dreaded 2 week wait. it would be great to talk to people in the same situation as its such an emotional time eh.   if you want to chat more email me on janettem@xtra.co.nz

cheers
J

Hi all

We're going to have our fourth IUI in a couple of weeks, so I'm a bit of an old hand
We've been ttc literally for years; DH has a low count etc post vas reversal. Everything seems to be fine with me, except that I'm relatively old.
I'm on 100mg clomid, which has produced two or three good follies every time and I've twice had the trigger injection too, but no luck so far.
We've decided this will be our last attempt, so fingers crossed!
Good luck girls..

AF arrived for me today. Cycle 4 of clomid, told not to BD - too many follicals, but we still BD anyway! And still no baby!! So rather down today. Not sure if we will start IUI this month as we are away for a week which should be around O time - so may be the following month. Frustrating for me is that both DH and I have nothing wrong with us. I am having a scan end of this week to check my tubes again - last time all good, but FA said to check again can't hurt. Its so frustrating with both DH and I all good, me ovulating each cycle and being very responsive to low low levels ie 12mg (4 follicals) of clomid and yet still no baby!    The last week I have felt quite depressed, esp as I thought clomid would work.
Please keep me posted with all your IUI journeys.
Catie - wow 4 cycles, what is next?
JMac how is the TWW?

Hi guys,
wow catie, 4 cycles - how many will they do? i have been told they will only do 3 on me here in chch. Are you in chch?
I just turned 36 a week ago so time is ticking for me too.
Bree - dont you hate it when they say too many follicals and too risky - i say bring it on, i dont mind hitting more than one, but i also say to them that we havent had any luck hitting one what makes you think we will hit two lol ! they def arent keen on it tho.
Chin up dol, I know its hard and majorly frustrating - and hormones dont help at AF time!
The 2WW is darned hard, 1 week down today and 1 week to go, i have the early preg tests so im trying really hard not to do it as i dont want to get upset if its too early. plus im trying not to get too excited as it just doesnt feel like i have enough luck for it to work on the first IUI. i dont feel any different tho? i was at a wine festival yesterday and even didnt drink just in case! A friend said you shouldnt do any hard exercise in the 2WW time either? ive been gymming tho so i hope i havent done the wrong thing? the centre said to just do everything as per normal. (but what is normal when you are on the infertility journey eh! lol)
anyhoo good to chat to you guys. Keep me posted on how you are doing!

Hi again
I tink they pretty much keep doing them as long as you're willing to pay for them - the consent form I have, which is signed each time, has spaces for eight cycles. There is a point at which, statistically its not worth continuing - if it was going to work it would have, and we're pretty much at that point with this one. But we don't have any other options, unfortunately. I have a condition which means an increased likelihood of msc or extremely early birth, and don't qualify for funded IVF, so we've decided not to go privately - too much emotional and financial investment. So, wish me luck! (jmac we're in Akld, with Fert +)
and good luck to you guys.

Hi catie,
i thought that they might let you do more if you were paying and its still alot cheaper than IVF so its def worth a few more shotsat it eh, i was searching on the net and saw some overseas forums where people had 5 or 6 and it finally worked which is why i wondered about ours here in nz?    Good luck with your fourth one - will be wishing the very best for you!

Hi catie,

Very cool, so how big were they? not far away from ripe I hope, ahh so you are now at the stage where ur doing the pee test each day til you get the smiley face! how exciting! Im good, i have 2 more days to wait and if no curse by monday i go for blood tests so either way i should know by monday afternoon -im petrified i have to say, scared of the disappointment - hence im too scared to do the early preg test too. but what will be will be i guess!
Its great that you got 2 follies, i only had 1 the last time - i was a bit disappointed as i wanted twice the chances but they gave me the whole 1 is better lecture (yeah right lol). would be cool if you got both!
All the best for the next few days til you get it done - keep me posted!

I think one was 15 and the other 9. I have to have another scan tomorrow, and if the bigger of the two has got to 18, I'll have the trigger tomorrow night and IUI on Monday. Nah, blood tests for me, not pee tests. I get a bit sick of them but it's all in a good cause! In the past I've usually had a good size one on each side, so I hope all the spermies choose the correct tube to swim up

Fingers crossed for you.

Have a good weekend everyone.

I hope all your IUI cyclea are successful.

DH and I are going to our first specialist appointment on the 2nd April. I know that we will have a few test done before we can choose what to do next. We have unexplained fertility and I am sure they won't find anything wrong with either of us. My question is, how much does a cycle of iui and clomid cost?

Hi Ladies
I am joining your chat cos I too have been on a 3 month cycle of Clomid in Chch and told that my next step would be IUI. We have been trying for just over 2 years and I had a miscarriage in Nov. We are both 35 and have tried vits and herbs from naturopath, now clomid and next IUI. Not exactly sure what that entails but fingers cross. We too have unexplained fertility.

Good luck everyone

Hi trying - i've been away for a few weeks, however have a similar story to you. My DH and I concieved 17 mths ago whilst on the pill not trying. Miscarried at 11 wks, dramas over miscarriage (thats another story) and preg again to miscarry again at 5 wks. Anyway since June last year - no BFP. Have had 4 months of clomid (over last 6 months) started on 50mg and reduced to 12.5mg and each cycle had 3 - 5 follicals so told not to try - but we did! And still no BFP. I was so confident it would work! So now we start IUI. Meeting with FA specialist again on Thur to go over the process and then I guess I start when AF arrives - should be about 2 wks.
How is everyone else going?

Hi Bree,
Great news that you are taking the next step! I just did my first round of IUI last month (unsuccessful darn it) and are on round two now, just finished AF so am due for blood tests this friday and then a scan next week - should be doing the IUI about Fri 20th according to me - but our bodies do what they want so who knows! One thing i will share is that i really struggled with this first IUI being unsuccessful, i kept telling myself that it may not work first time but its new and exciting and the chances are higher so i think a part of my brain didnt listen and i was a real mess. Ive bounced back now tho and into round 2 and hoping i dont have the same war going on in my mind this month1 sounds like you have great follicals wtih 3-5 so that will increase your chances too. Good luck! Any questions dont hesitate to ask - its pretty simple, a bit uncomfy but over pretty quick, the worse part is waiting to get the timing right to do it and then of course the 2WW. Lets hope that this month is a successful month for lots of us on this site!

Hi Bree
Welcome back Bree! I had an IUI with FSP on Monday of last week so am anxiously waiting for my blood test on Wednesday ! I have extra sore boobs, but trying not to read too much into that because I get PMT-based sore boobs, plus i'm taking extra progesterone which I think also can contribute to it - though I've had the progesterone before and haven't been this sore. Fortunately my DH is being extra sweet to me - he had been getting sick of TTC, so I'm really appreciating his sensitivity.

This is my 4th IUI; I haven't found the previous ones to be all that much different (in terms of discomfort) to having a smear, though the last one was cos of the FSP (an extra procedure where they squirt the prepared sperm directly into the tubes).

Good luck!

hi catie - any news?

Posted By: Bree1977
Date Posted: 17 March 2009 at 12:40pm
Hi ladies, maybe I am the only "stupid" one out there, but thought I would pass this info on just in case there are others!
I thought EWCM was White! White and sticky/stretchy. I thought white like the white of an egg - when cooked. however speaking to the natropath yesterday and she said EWCM is clear - like the white of a raw egg and very slippery!   I guess I just didn't think about it to much and thought white meant white in colour!
the only CM I notice is normally in week 3 of cycle and I have White (as in colour white), thick I guess cloudy mucus and I thought this was EWCM - so I was thinking why is this in week 3 - bit late! So still actually not sure what this is, but at least i know it's not EWCM fertile mucus!
Also now worried that I dont produce EWCM and unsure what can be done about this. My natropath I am meeting with Friday and she said she has herbs etc to help and I also ordered some Pre-seed from baby4u. But keen to hear if any others thought this or have any solutions to having EWCM!
Good luck for tomorrow Catie

Oh no Bree, funny but not funny! Is that all you have been doing for tracking cycle or have you been temping as well?
Ya know there sounds like a whole bunch of ways you can increase EWCM, some people take cough medicine, sometimes if you exercise it 'comes out', there are probably natural pills you can take to increase as well.

TMI warning...
Also it depends on how you are checking it, if just wiping, then it might not be obvious so can always try checking internally, just be consistent!

Bummer Bree!

Have you been doing other testing too? the LH kits you get from www.baby4u.co.nz are really good. we pinpoint my ovulation with blood tests and the LH kits, i start testing at day 12 and as soon as it gives you a positive LH you ovulate 24-36 hours afterwards so its a good accurate tool !
I dont get alot of CM and have used the special lube also - its supposed to be very good. I think people with pcos can have probs with CM too?

Hey what else did the naturopath have to say - was she quite positive about helping infertility? im seeing on next week so im interested to know what sort of things they try? did she say?

Posted By: Bree1977
Date Posted: 17 March 2009 at 5:59pm
I havent been temping or anything as on clomid my specialist said it could interfere with results and so blood tests were what confirmed ovulation. With regards to EWCM - I started to notice and become aware of changes, however again clomid can change this.
I am seeing the natropath on Fri so will update then. I believe we do blood tests, hair analysis and then a care programe is given, ie natural herbs etc to get the body in optimal health and I guess they explain all the natural fertility things like temping etc. i think they suggest you have a few months on all this stuff before trying and then ttc. I have read that natropaths have good results if you follow there plans - prob for me is i am so darn impatient, ie if I get told to use condoms for 3 mths whilst cleaning my body on the natural stuff and then ttc I will be agitated. As every month of not trying is a month of not having a baby and after 17 (nearly 18) of them - enough is enough. in saying that if in 3 months I am not preg i would have wished i did what the natroapth said! Anyway, will update more after Friday.
Good luck Catie and jmac

Hey ladies,

I am so glad I found this thread. I just created a topic on the planning pregancy area asking about IUI treatment because DH and I are starting that in June.

Bree, we had some chats on the clomid section a while ago now you and I are in the same boat with IUI What a journey aye. Far out, I was totally over everything last month. That was our last clomid month and i was so hoping it would work but no joy so IUI for us now.

It sounds like a relatively straight forward procedure.

It has been interesting reading your stories.

My doc said he would put me on clomid for the IUI. Some of you guys have been on injections too is that right?

Good luck ladies I hope those BFP's come in thick and fast for us!

Hi flipsta
good to see you on here too.
Im doing my 2nd IUI tomorrow. Im on clomid (have been for a year) and this cycle ive produced 3 eggs and they got tired of waiting for them so they gave me an injection today (the eggs are at size on a scan yesterday) so i should release them in 24-36 hrs, so 2:30pm tomorrow i have IUI tomorrow. its a really simple procedure - the worse part is the waiting for the lh surge and then the dreaded 2WW.
Its a bit uncomfy but pretty easy and over really quickly too. i had to come off clomid for 3 months and try naturally after an operation last year so i know how you feel. then they put you back on again for iui - the break is good for the body and you have better chances when you first start it up again so there is a method in their madness. lol.
if our 2nd iui isnt successful then the doc might change the plan and rather than use clomid use the injectables but he doesnt like them because they are more expensive ($50 a day!) and have more risk of multiples - but hey im willing to try anything for our last shot at IUI.    But hopefully this one works!

Thanks for that jmac. Good luck with everything!
I really hope it works out for you this month. all things are crossed!

I have some friends who were successful with IUI for both their kids so that is good for the hopes.

$50 a day! crickey yes hopefully the clomid will work.
I think we will give it 3 shots and if no luck then onto IVF for us.

Do you mind if I ask how long you have been trying?

Hi Flipsta,

We have been trying just over 18 months.   But we also only found out i had a blocked cervix last year so i had an operation in november to clear that.
Prior to that i had been under the fertility centre and on clomid most of last year. they only picked it up when a die test on my tubes couldnt be done as they couldnt insert the catheter into my cervix. we had to go private for the op which was $6k
then 3 months trying without help to see if it would happen but im 36 so they didnt want to waste too much time so we started iui last month. this will be my 2nd go today.

Hey does anyone know if after the trigger shot do you have to have the progesterone pesseries as they havent mentioned it to me yet? ill have to ask when im in there today i guess.

Bree - it will be interesting to see if she advises you dont ttc for 3 months eh, i know what you mean as that would be really hard! i see a naturopath next week and we are mid iui so he'll be out of luck if he tells me that lol. keep me posted - i find all this information really good.

Hi all
Just thought I might join here as this looks like a possibility for mine and hubbys future.
Hubby has one daughter from his first marriage and I have 2 boys and then we have our little 4yr old daughhter together.
We made a stupid mistake and thought we were through having children and had a vasectomy done when our little girl was 9mths. But as we got close to getting rid of her things as she was growing out of them, I would end up in tears and every time AF was late I was still hoping that I might be pregnant.
So after lots of talks with hubby we went through with a vasectomy reversal 18mths after vasectomy. Who would have thought it would be so hard.
But here we are 2yrs later and still no closer to having our last baby.
Hubby has been on numerous vitamins that are suppose to help with count and motility and it not changing but getting worse with each month.
Friday we got the results from our latest SA and it was 1million and 16% motility. So we are going to get GP to refer us to a fertility specialist and see what they recommend.

Anybody here been to Hamilton's fertility specialist?
What is the whole process like at the first visit?

I was just reading back and saw Catie was due to get results back soon. Hope it is all good results.

Look forward to getting to know you all through this process.

Hi Purpledragon,

We have been going to Auckland's fertility associates since Oct last year. We have been trying for 19 months now.

Our first visit was discussing our test results. DH's first sperm analysis had lots of sperm but 30% motility so we had another test done a month later and that showed 50% motility so the doc was happy with that so put us on clomid for 4 months. We had no success with that so we are now trying IUI treatment, starting in June/July.

Sperm results seem to be up and down from month to month so who knows.

Good luck with everything. They may well put you get you straight into something like IUI (artifical insemination) or IVF.   Whatever they do hope it all works out for you.

Hey how is everyone else going? Catie, jmac, Bree??

Are you still ttc on clomid whilst you wait for iui?

The wait sucks aye so I hope those days do go quick for you.

No am off the clomid as I am due to go for a laproscopy next week so they wanted me to stay off the clomid last month so my ovaries are not over stimulated for the procedure.

See how all that goes

Keep that chin up over the next 9 days

Hi Flipsta,

Good luck for the lap next week - what day do you go in? Is it to check your tubes? Have you had one before -they are pretty easy really, i had one on a friday and was back to work on the monday.   Its weird tho as you dont want them to find anything wrong but you do want some answers and wonder if knowing something is wrong is better than no explanation eh. I had a blocked cervix from scarring and it was extremely tight too - they still have trouble doing the IUI because of it but he said its much better after the operation.

Sooo happy for you hun. Congratulations!!!

Lots and lots of sticky baby dust going your way !!!

Jmac, yeah it is to check my tubes to see if everything is ok. Haha it is funny you say that cause yeah I don't want them to find anything wrong but at the same time if there is a problem then at least we can get on and fix it.

I get quite painful periods so wondering if there might be some Endo.   I go in next Thursday so got 2 days off work.

I hope these days are not to loooong and drawn out for you! Bring on that positive result

Hi Ladies,

Just thought I would join this thread!

Firstly congrats Bree!

My Hubby and I have our first appt at Fert Assoc - Akl on Wed morning, I'm quite nervous but really excited too that we are finally getting things going!

DH had some tests done a few years ago showing he has only 10% motility but things may have changed since then.

We have been actively trying for about 20 months!

I'm pretty sure IUI is the way to go for us and I have read sooooooo much info on it so feel quite prepared. I know however this will all go out the window!

I think we will try IUI for three rounds depending on the cost & the outcome of course!

Good luck to everyone else going through the same thing.

Let the emotional rollercoaster begin!

Good luck Parki. Just remember to keep positive, even if it doesn't work the first time - after all, you're actually doing something positive to help things along, and you've got a good chance at getting the result you want. FA may also discuss the possiblity of stimulation with you so upping the chances of twins etc, but also increasing your overall chances.

Thanks Ladies,

Congrats Jmac! That is awesome news and makes me feel quite positive!

Did you have 'Simple IUI' or 'Stimulated'?

I am happy with either, whatever the Doctor thinks is the best option. I would be stoked to have twins! DH, not so much!

If you don't mind, would you please be able to tell me how much each round cost? PM if you like?

Thanks,

Hi Parki,

I was on clomid and so they stimulated my ovaries and i normally got 2 or 3 follicles. the first month we did the iui just by waiting and waiting for ovulation and it fell on a weekend - they still did it but it was unsuccessful, the second time they gave me a trigger shot to pinpoint it so id release my eggs on the friday and i had iui that day.
in chch its approx $1030 per month.

if you need injectibles rather than clomid they are an added $50 per day for 10 or so days that you are on them.

good luck!!

Hey Jmac,

How are you going? Feeling all good?

Welcome Parki!. DH and I have been trying for 20 months too. We tried clomid for 4 months with no success then I had a laparoscopy 3 weeks ago and they excised some endometriosis so we are trying for 2 months drug-free then if no luck onto IUI treatment.

All the best with your appointment!
