Here is some background:

Gabrielle has known when wees/poos are coming for many many months now. She can tell me before it happens and now often removes herself from the room before she does them (in her nappy).

She knows 100% what the toilet is for. She has been in with a friend of hers many times and tells me in detail about her friend "big girl knickers, wees on toilet" etc.

She brings me her potty book every day and wants us to read it.

I am convinced she is more than ready in every way.

We tried bare bottom for a while and at first she got upset when she got wet but then she would just wee happily and gleefully (!!) and not care about being wet.

BUT...

She flatly refuses to even sit on the toilet or a potty. Doesn't matter where they are or what approach we take she just screams at us and will not. She states she doesn't want to be a big girl too.

She appears to like nappies and really dislikes knickers.

So, it really is a case of not wanting to.

My question is...do I take nappies away for a bit and see if we get anywhere or do I leave it in her hands to decide when she will do it. I suspect once she decides it'll be virtually done overnight. She is a very stubborn kid so if she knows we really want something, she will become an immovable object!! LOL

It sounds like she's nervous.  She's certainly showing all the right signs of being ready but if she is refusing to use the toilet/potty at all the question is if forcing her to would be worse for her than waiting until she's ready.

Have you noticed previously in any circumstances that she's had trouble dealing with transitions due to being a perfectionist and wanting to do it right straight away?

Personally I would wait until she's ready to sit on the potty/toilet.  A couple of ways to encourage her would be to take her out to choose her own new potty or toilet seat and try and encourage her to sit on it with her nappy on to get used to it.

Thanks Mrs M. I tried getting her to choose a seat but that is something else she refuses to do....choose. She gets really antsy if you give her a choice. She just shouts no and stomps off. She doesn't want to choose her clothes etc. I don't think she really cares about details like that. She just wants to get on with learning and exploring.

Sounds a bit like Ella was at first.
She really liked the idea of the toilet and loved reading our book about the potty, she'd tell us when she was doing a wee or poo and want her nappy changed right away but she just did not want to do anything in the potty or on the toilet.
I think for her it was just too much attention and encouragement from everyone.
We gave it a break altogether for a month or two (aside from reading the potty book and letting her see us and big cousin using the toilet) and then one day told her she was a big girl now and wouldn't be wearing nappies in the daytime any more.
We were really casual and just told her it was potty time every hour or so. I usually brought it into the toilet with me and we went at the same time.
She took to it straight away and after a couple of days she started taking herself when she felt the need.
We asked everyone to just follow our casual lead and not ask her if she needed to go (as that resulted in foot stomping and complete refusal to use the potty)
Maybe this approach would work with Elle? Good luck Fiona!

I think she is resisting a feeling of being pushed to sit on the toilet/potty. I think you have no choice but to totally drop all mention for a couple of months. Then when she seems to have relaxed, reintroduce the potty (it's not so high up) and hold onto her for at least the first time, so she can be reassured.

I agree with the others that all you can do is drop all mention of the potty.

Maddie has done the same sort of thing, refusing to sit on the potty etc. She would have massive tanty's if we suggested it. So we dropped all mention and just left the potty in the bathroom where she could see it.

Now we are at a point where while she won't do anything in it, she will happily sit on it bare bottomed at her insistence.

We're just keep letting her lead us in the TT thing.
