I have just bought DD a new hat with a chin strap thinking it would stop her from taking off her hat but noooo she can still take it off and It usually only stays on for about 10 seconds.
Any advice!? |

| Daniel hates the ones with straps. We just ask him to put it on and praise him lots when he does that. It's taken lots of persistance but it usually can stay on for about 20 mins now. Whereas it used to be about 20 seconds lol |

| Lots of "practice" and praise! We are having the same thing with Tom but he will now keep iton for about 5 min. I also placed him in front of the mirror and put his hat on and made a huge fuss. he thought that was cool and tries to get it on himself. He is definately getting better..we are just being persistant. |

Every time she took the hat off we'd put her inside (or if we were out, take her to the car).
She's learnt now, no hat = no play. Sounds quite mean written down

With Spencer I just keep putting it back on until he gives up and leaves it on. Now he only pulls it off a couple of times and then he leaves it on.
I also found it helps to stick the hat on and then quickly distract them with something else so they forget about it. Is so funny when he plays with my friends toddler if he takes it off her son puts it back on his head for me  Although as he is only 17 months as well sometimes it is more on his face than on his head.-------------

I do the same as Azza. No hat = no play.
They learned pretty quickly. Also, like Shorty, we wear hats too so they see us modelling the behaviour. ------------- Mel, Mummy to E: 6, B: 4 and:

I make sure i always wear my hat too, in the lines of - Mummy has her hat on Fay has her hat on - same with sunscreen and anything I really want her to do i role model it to her. Works for Fay and has done since she was 7 months old ------------- http://www.babysfirstsite.com">

We did "hat training" in the swing - no hat= no swing.
It seemed to work - she is really good now, and gets her hat herself when she wants to go outside. She seems to prefer one hat over another, so it might be a matter of finding one she likes to wear - but persistence seems to be the key to getting them to wear hats. ------------- http://lilypie.com">  http://lilypie.com">

I tend to let Ella pick what hat she wants to wear (she has several different types) and they generally helps. I have also started the no hat= no outside play thing. She can be a funny girl at times through- she tends to like wearing her hat when it is raining outside (for her it is more of a fashion item I think). ------------- Mum to Ella (5) and Tom (2) |

I did manage to get Megan to keep her hat on for about 20 minutes while we are the lake..she did keep trying to take it off but I said no you have to keep it on and when she didnt try to pull it off I would say "good girl for keeping your hat on" ------------- http://lilypie.com">

apparently keeping their hands busy once you've put the hat on works. So once you've put it on give her something to eat or to play with or do some hand action songs or somthing. It's suppose to distract them from grabbing at the hat.

Initially we would just distract Jack as soon as his hat went on and he would forget about it for long periods of time. That was with his bucket hat with chin strap. He has a cap now and he never seems to take it off, not sure if it is the cap style that he prefers or if he has 'grown out' of the stage of taking his hat off ------------- Lindsey

All my friends I think experienced this around this age....It gets better but it is lots of perserverance and praise....
Now because they understand much better..Blake knows he cant go outside without the hat on.... -------------
