I know adults should have 2l+ but how much should toddlers have?
The gremlins have 500ml of milk as 2 bottles per day and they drink water the rest of the time but the total amount of water they drink doesn't seem to be that much. I can't give them a drink bottle to drink from throughout the day coz they either tip it out on the floor or they fill their mouths up and spit it on the floor so they have to ask for a drink and drink it in the kitchen. -------------  Maya Grace (28/02/03)

I give Tom his sippy cup after breakfast, morning tea, after lunch, after his nap, with his afternoon tea, after dinner. I have noticed that if its lying around he will pick it up at random times. We probably go through about 1L of water on a hot day (+200ml milk). I have noticed if its not hot he doesnt look for his water so much.
No idea if this is enough. |

| I have no idea. isla has around 200mls of milk a day, sometimes up to 400mls- I know thats not the 'correct' ammount but cant get more into her- when she asks for it I give her it, and I offer twice a day also. The rest of the time she drinks water from her sippy bottle thingy. The last 2 days its been really hot and shes had a lot more water. |

Wow, they'd be nowhere near 1l of water, probably 500ml at most 
Maybe I should be forcing more into them. The only reason I ask is that they've had a few constipation issues lately which they've never had before and they eat plenty of fruit and fibre so I'm wondering if it's inadequate fluid intake. ------------- Maya Grace (28/02/03)

We were just talking about this over dinner, Neosha went through a 1 litre bottle of water today, I put a litre in the fridge in the morning then gave her the last bit at dinner. Must be the heat. On top of that she has 400mls of milk.

Ekk I have no idea. Alize doesnt drink milk at all now and just has water on demand. He always has a water bottle with him and at DC they have set times for moring tea lunch etc. Water is given out at every meal or snack. I gues as ling as they are weeing and have access to drinks to be able to drink when they are thristy then thats all you can do really. Rhiannon has milk on her breakfast, and she has a water bottle that i fill sometimes twice a day and each bottle is 750mls....but like me Rhiannon is a big water drinker ------------- http://lilypie.com">

Thats a great idea Neoshasmummy, I might steal it! If I put a bottle of water in the fridge and fill all their drinks from it all day, I'll know at the end of the day how much they've had to drink

McKayla has a water bottle and then a sippy cup at each meal. Warm days she drinks loads and on winter days not that much. I dont go by the amount. Some days it might be like 300ml.
Just look at the colour of the urine during the day (she still waits for me to see what she has done in the toilet). And if I see it does go darker I just make sure she has more oppurtunity to drink water. ------------- http://lilypie.com">

Keziah has never been a big water drinker but lately she has started to drink from a small H2Go bottle during the day and a sippy cup at meal times. It's still minimal (maybe 250ml if that but it's a start)
I'm going to steal Neoshasmummy's idea as well so I too can keep an eye on how much water she's drinking  -------------

Georgia has 3 x 150-180ml bottles each day and her sippy water cup at every meal. I leave her sippy cup out all day on her highchair (and refill it when needed) and she will either climb up onto the couch to grab her water bottle off the tray of the highchair, or will point to it so I can get it for her. She quite often takes her water bottle to bed too when it is really hot. We always take her water bottle with us when going out - in the car, pram etc. She is very used to it being around....so much so she was worn it out and needs a new one now! I have noticed that since it is really warm now, her appetite is less and she does want to drink more. We have only really given her milk and water (not even juice), but this week I introduced Organic Apple iceblocks - which she seems to like and I am sure helps with the discomfort of teething.

Jake has a cup of milk during the day (150mls or so) plus a bottle at night (200-300mls+) and milk on cereal, plus water with all meals and in between if he asks for it. I've never worried too much about the total amount, as long as he has adequate wet naps - I just let his thirst dictate what he drinks. I have also been wary of not wanting him to fill up too much on water between meals so he eats well at meal times.
He doesn't seem to consume as much water as most of the toddlers above, but does eat heaps of fruit which makes up for it a little. And on hot days definitely guzzles alot more. The latest research has come out saying we SHOULDN'T be drinking as much water as was previously advised, so I personally wouldn't worry about it too much, as long as they are not dehydrated. Little kids are good at regulating their food and fluid intakes - alot better than us adults!! (unless sick, of course).------------- DS (5yrs) and DD (3yrs) |
