We are soon to launch into TT as Elle has had all the signs for ages now. We've been holding off due to winter + bed transition.
Elle knows when she is doing number 1's and 2's. She is forever saying her bottom is sore which I suspect just means it is uncomfe as she can feel the dampness. I *think* she has started to hold on to her poos now as she's started going every 3 days rather than every 2. From the morning of day 2 she will say "poo's coming" and get gradually more grumpy until they finally arrive on day 3. She has always had issues with her poos. It's always been a struggle for her. As a small baby she'd only go every 14 days and then it eventually turned to rock solid poos that caused her to bleed. Now they are soft but formed as they should be. She will stand in a corner, and push and strain for up to 40mins before they come. No one can go near her during that time or she gets seriously, seriously upset. Everytime I've tried taking her to the toilet when she is going she gets incredibly upset and angry. How do we even begin to get passed this? ------------- Mummy to Gabrielle and Ashley |

Although she has soft poos once they're out it does sound like she's suffering mild consitpation. It shouldn't hurt her to poo and she shouldn't feel uncomfortable from the day before they arrive. Why not try giving her a couple of prunes to snack on or watered down prune juice to help everything pass more swiftly (not too much tho, you don't want to give her the runs). I'd also make sure she's not having more than 1 small banana per day. Once you get that sorted it should be plain sailing. -------------

Need to watch bananas as apparently (according to my GP) they can cause constipation in some kids and the opposite in others!
#2's is a tricky thing. Is she ok to do it in her nappies? With Hannah if I tried to put her on the loo too early, she would stress and hold on and couldn't push it out. I developed a rule of thumb where we'd try twice and the third time I'd ignore her so that it could "accidentally" go into her nappy, so she wouldn't get constipated. We got there in the end but during TT it feels like a long journey! ------------- |

She won't eat prunes or kiwifruit (or almost anything). I would say she has had constipation her whole life and the docs agree that in some ways she does BUT they just say that picky eating and constipation is just typical of kids on the autistic spectrum (I am sure Elle is not on the spectrum...those of you who know her agree with me on that). They say the constipation isn't bad enough to warrant any treatment and that is more that she chooses not to go.
I am considering getting a referral to a dietician. I know masses about nutirition as it is a keen interest of mine but I'm not sure if you have to just keep offering good choices when you have an insanely picky eater or if you eventually have to force feed or similar. I know what she needs to eat etc but I can't get her to eat any of it. ------------- Mummy to Gabrielle and Ashley |

The poo think. Ai yai yai. I still struggle on that one to be quite honest.
Okay background info. I started with McKayla at about 18 months by introducing the potty. She was at that stage telling us she makes a week or just before poos will tell us and get the clean nappy ready plus wipes ect and we must change as soon as possible. So you would think she is ready. Then at about 22 months she was in panties and when she said okay a wee is coming we were running ahead and she would go on the potty. Eventually she would just strip herself and ran. SIL arrives on seen, yelled a few times at the poor child to not take her clothes off first (she hates seeing naked kids) and what if she has an accident. McKayla was still at that stage making about 80% in the potty or toilet and now and then would have an accident. We got a few poos in the potty or she would ask for a nappy and do it then. She still needed to stand over it. But within 3 days of this yelling ect she would just silently come up to me and embarresly ask me for a nappy and would do a wee and poo that way but she would go and hide when she does it behind a curtain ect. The more this angry mommy (at SIL not my child) calmy tried to explain it is okay to have an accident and I am so proud of her the worst it got. Eventually she would hold on the whole day and wait until she is in the bath and then only go. So I made the choice back in nappies. I waited a few months and in April this year got her a wee doll and we played with the doll to make wee's. Got her to do the wees in the potty in the bath with water and then later just put enough water in to touch her toes. She would go immediatly. Then started with a dish at the toilet to touch her feet in warm water. It would relax her enough to just go. She started telling us again she needed to go but at winter start she had loads more accidents so it became toilet timing more than toilet training again but she is finally starting to tell us again and making it about 80% of the time again. On the poo issue. She started waiting for a nightime nappy and within 20 min will do a poo but she seems to go red with pushing and has to stand. We got it a few times in the potty by me really encouraging a lot to finish it in the potty or toilet. But she sometimes screams blue murder at me if we suggest that she does it. The help of bribery of watching a barbie dvd sometimes help but I think we try about once a week and she will do it in the potty and be super proud but the next night we are back to her telling us NO NO NO I MAKE POOPOO IN NAPPY NO BIG MESS ON FLOOR. Mmmmm wonder where my poor kiddy got that from. Big moral go with the flow with her. Perhaps see how she will react. A whole in the nappy didnt work for McKayla but might for you. Or perhaps a star chart might work but my best advice is some kids potty train easier with wees than poos and others are potty trained sooner with poos than wee's. Sometimes it doesnt happen at the same time. BTW McKayla has never ever made a big mess on the floor. Oh God I am happy that my child is not the only one with this problem.....well not happy but you know what I mean.
DD will eat prunes and kiwi fruit and has soft Poo's but like your DD she will stand in a corner and hold it....for couple of day and then cry because she is not feeling well and by then poos are harder and when she finally does it her bottom bleeds a bit! Like your DD she also had constipation as a child but never went that long with out doing Poo's and like your DD her bottom bled so now I think (and my GP Told us)...that its all in her head! I know that your DD gets upset when you go near her ....so does my DD but I found that as soon as she stands in a corner and holds it, I go over and take her hand and lead her to toilet and sit her down and with the excisting pressure she just does it in the toilet....she hates me for like 2 min and then she is very proud and says Mumma I pushed the yucky snake poo out ...LOL. I have no other solutions but just explaining to her that she will feel better after she does poos...what a good girl....I am so proud of you etc etc. If we dont catch in time and she goes a few days with out Poos she will tell us that Poo is Stuck and it hurts...I sit her on the toilet and she crys etc...I end up putting enema (sp??) to get her to do it and when it does come out its HARD! (My poor baby) The enema was given to us by our doc. She hates it and says no Medicine Mumma and I say well baby if you do it on your own we wont need it and that seems to work for us! There was a time when I would be in tears because she would scream as the pressure came and she would shake as she held it back....oh man my Doc was sick of seeing us! Ours used to be hard and she would bleed a bit but once we settled into the two day routine, they softened up and the bleeding stopped. She goes through the long, long pushing routine even when they are 100% slushy...not sure why. We very rarely have hard ones now but she still takes an age to pass them. She usually goes in the morning so we are frequently late for things! This morning she woke at 6 saying "poos coming" and it took her until 8.30 to go. ------------- Mummy to Gabrielle and Ashley |

I haven't had a chance to read everything (my tv show is on in 10 mins lol) but try brown sugar water, hide it if you have to. It's a natural laxitive - the molasus makes them go whether they like it or not and it's the only thing that worked for C.
Do that for a couple of days or so to get the bowel regular then wean her off it, she'll get into a pattern and then won't need the laxitive. Happy to have a more in dept chat next time I see you  ------------- http://lilypie.com">
