Tom wakes around 7.30 and is back asleep by 9.30. Then he wakes around 11.30 and back down around 2pm. Then he wakes at 4pm and goes to bed at 7pm. Not too different.

So shes only awake like 6 hrs a day? That does seem like a huge ammount to sleep,..but it may be still in the normal range. Isla has always been at the min end of the range for sleep, so that seems like a hell of a lot of sleep to me! I would ph plunket line or your plunket nurse and ask them, o your Dr,..just to check it out.

Hmmmmmm I also think it sounds like a lot. What I would worry about is that she doesn't sound awake and alert when she is up, more like you are trying to keep her awake. I don't think a trip to the docs could hurt, probably nothing and she is just a baby that needs the extra sleep but I always think its better to get them checked out whenever you are a concerned.

yeah well i talked to the docs about that when she was 9months and she just said dont worry just be thankfull that she sleeeps but this much?? shes alert when she first wakes up but after a while she get really tired and grumpy and i read that only newborns are ment to sleep this much and 1 year olds are ment to sleep 12- 14 hours a day yeah i mite call up plunket line and see what they say. im just worried they mite think im a bad mum for letting her sleep that long.... ohh and shes got really bad exzema so my theory is that she must be awake most of the night scraching

no useful advice to add sorry.....but wow I wish Ella would want to start the day at 10.30/11. I still consider sleeping until 7 a sleep in .
I don't think anyone would think you are a bad mum b/cause your baby is sleeping so much.....seems far meaner to keep her up and awake when she is obviously tired and needs sleep.
She is crawling or walking yet? I found once Ella started walking she got really tired during the day and needed a bit of extra sleep to keep her going.

That does seem like a huge amount of sleep. Jake was a big sleeper when youger, but by 11/12 months was down to one nap of about 1.5hours some days, otherwise 2x 1-1.5hours on days when he was really tired / sick / at daycare.
The only time he slept like that was when he had pneumonia and we ended up in hospital, and even then it was only for about 2 days.
I would go to the doc and get referred to a specialist if I was you.

Plunket wont think you are a bad Mum. The will think you a being very caring trying to do whats best for your child by finding out if its ok for her to be sleeping this much or not!

Does she get up at 7am ish or does she sleep from 7pm to 10.30am without waking?
At that age Elle would sleep 12 to 14 hours at night then have 3.5 or 4 hours of nap time (over 2 naps). So her total sleep time was averaging 17 hours per day too.
I took her to the doc as she was sleeping sooooo much and it turned out she was iron deficient and once she'd had a course of iron supplementation she reduced to a normal amount of sleep.

I would recommend seeing your doctor and talking about an iron test - may not be an issue but certainly worth testing.
