Hey guys - how do you clean your toddlers teeth? Now that hes one plunket reminded me I need to be brushing them with a toothbrush. I've tried but Jake still will not let me brush his teeth. He will happily chew on the toothbrush and play with it, and I've cleaned my teeth in front of him so he can see what he is meant to be doing but it hasn't helped. Short of holding him down, kicking and screaming and forcing the toothbrush into his mouth (not a very calming scene before bedtime!!) .... any ideas of what I can do??
Thanks.

i used to force them maybe once every week, the rest of the time let them chew on the brush and watch you do brush yours... modelling is the best way to teach them...

I'm not going to push Daniel..

We give him his toothbrush to play with while we are brushing our teeth and get his attention to watch us which he thinks is hilarious and then once our teeth are done he holds the toothbrush with us and we give them a quick brush. He usually lets us

Michaela and I brush each others teeth then grin at the mirror to admire our handy work.  She used to hate brushing her teeth but she would let me get in there breifly while she was occupied brushing mine and now she's older she wants big strong teeth like Diego (the sabar tooth tiger from Ice Age) so is happy to run off to the bathroom to brush her teeth and sometimes brings her toothbrush and paste to us.

jack lets me brush his teeth so he gets a good scrub done first, then i let him do it himself.

charli is really into doing things herself so i just make sure i give her teeth a good scrub once a week and the rest of the time she does it herself

i'd just let him chew the brush and keep trying to scrub them yourself, but if he's not keen, don't panic too much. he'll let you do it when he's older and can understand abit more

sorry no help here, as Ella loves me brushing me teeth and always opens her mouth really wide whenever she sees the toothbrush.

Have you tried brushing his teeth while he is iin the bath?

Cant you just rub the teeth with your finger in a piece of muslin?  Although you would have to be keen to go into a set of chompers aremed only with muslin.

I try and get in there with Josh but he won't let me so in the bath witht he face cloth I give them a good wipe, he lets me do that as he gets to suck on the cloth as well.

I just let Spencer chew on his, he chews on the bristles so I think that is good enough. I give him his brush whilst cleaning my teeth so he can watch and he has started trying to imitate. If I try to clean them he gets really annoyed as he wants to do it himself so I figure why have that battle when him chewing on it is probably doing just as good a job.

I followed the suggestion of someone from ohbaby and got Alyssa her own electric toothbrush (battery powered bratz one) and she loves it! I guess it was hard for her to understand why she should use a normal toothbrush when mummy and daddy used an electric one too.. Now she brushes alongside me morning and night. It's not entirely thorough but she tries and lets me finish the job if I feel they need a good scrub :)

Jack and I brush our teeth together in the morning and DH does it in the bath at night. I give them a quick swipe with the brush first, sometimes I hold his hands so I can get in there and then just let him chew on the tooth brush. I have decided not to make too big a deal about it as if he really hates it then I am less likely to get any brushing done

Thanks for the suggestions. Yes I've tried in the bath. Tonight he actually let me get one little brush in before he grabbed it .... and then he tried to brush my teeth, so I think hes getting the idea!

I had thought him chewing on it was close enough for now too - until plunket mentioned it to me and I felt like I should be making a bit more effort to brush them properly!
