Okay Just wondering how are your toddlers when you do grocery shopping? My wee Jaxon who until today I thought was just an angel decided to put on a huge paddy. He is 2 in a few months and today I took him to the supermarket to go get our groceries. Usually have no problems but today he decided he wasnt going in the trolley which he usually loves. I did not have his stroller(duh!!) although that would have been difficult also with that and a trolley. He just refused and cried when I tried. Everyone was watching me. I was getting really frustrated. then I took him to the warehouse to see if we could get my niece a present and he just got into everything.. Usually he goes in a trolley but no way was he going in one. so left with NOTHING! Got to the car and he refused to get in his blimin car seat.. Argh!!! He cried and screamed as though he was hurting. He climbed out of his seat and fought me for ages.. Got him out and took him for a walk around the lost my car keys.. Argh!!!! I was so frustrated and people were just watching me. How embarassing can it get. Jaxon ws being so naughty. Mum sad I should have given him a smack on the bum but then some one might call the cops. Gees. What are you meant to fricken do.. I forced him in at last and once we were on our way he started smiling and laughing.. What a morning and now my shoulder is killing me from carrying him around. Any ideas ? How am I meant to go shopping in the future?? ------------- http://pregnancyplanet.net/tickers/">

If Jack doesn't want to go in the trolley I get down to his level and explain the behaviour I expect (No pulling things off shelves, no running away etc) and let him walk. The key is to keep him busy, Jack gets to put the fruit in the bags, get things off shelves and put it in the trolley. I have to remind him to not touch everything and stay close every five minutes but it makes for a much happier shopping trip. If he misbehaves he goes straight into the trolley and strapped in whether he likes it or not. If he cries I just ignore him (and the stares) and keep shopping. When he calms down he gets told the rules again and is allowed back down (if he wants).
At the end if hes good he gets a wee treat while I'm packing (usually one finger of a kit kat). I also usually have some crackers or something in my bag and can sometimes get him to sit in the trolley eating while I'm shopping. With the car seat, there is no chioce in my car so he gets put in there and strapped in whether he likes it or not. Don't worry about all the stares everyone has been there and half the time they are probably just thinking aww that poor mum.

Thanks RachandJack. Great advice . I think I might try and include Jaxon in the shopping next time but probably when Daddy or Nanny are there for the first attempt hehe. Always worth a try now and when he is older maybe he will be an expert :) I think I will just be tougher next time with the car.. It was totally a shock to me cos hes never done it be4 with the carseat. When i first put him in, He acted as though he was hurting so wasnt sure if it was a tanty or he was hurt. I agree with Rach....Z was the same and now completely refuses to sit in the Trolly.
We have tried many things with her...giving her a pack of some thing to chew on but only if she sits in the trolly...and most times she would and we would be rushing thru shopping. But now that she is a bit older we just jet her walk with us and I give her things and she puts it in the trolly. We are lucky that she doesnt really touch things.....BUT as soon as we get to the greeting cards section she has to have two "Wiggles Card"...she will walk with them for the rest of the shopping and they we take it off her saying that we will get her a Lollypop! And she is happy to give it up! Z is alsi difficult at times with car seat but these days we tell her the police is coming and if she is not sitting in her car seat they will atke her away!! she put the belt on and then tells us to do the same. Mind you Z is 10mnth older than Jaxon so this will not work for him .....try different things to distract him by...start telling him a story (if he is in to that) or offer bribes.... Jake is fantastic at the supermarket and has been since a wee one. taine on the other hand - i now have a list of people who refuse to take him shopping, including myself. He is just appalling. he runs around like mad. has been known to get himself out of the trolley regardless of being strapped in. I try to give him a basket or get him "involved" and honestly it never worked at all.
My strategy is - leave him at home when i shop. Jake I take all the time. taine, never. |

i took all three to the supermarket today and got complimented by the checkout lady on how good they were!
other times tho i have had old ladies return my son from the car park, children screaming in the middle of the aisle, paddies about where in the trolley each child wants to sit, paddies cause he doenst want to sit in there at all... i remember when they were younger ripping open a pack of rusks to give to gabriel to stop him grumping... ------------- http://www.myfitnesspal.com/weight-loss-ticker">

I will get a harness and walk with that. Sometimes they dont want to hold your hand and this way it gives them some freedom to walk.
Also keep on telling them not to touch anything. Sometimes it is great to let them take a small cuddly toy with to the shopping centre to hold onto. Let them help by putting stuff in. Luckily for me McKayla loves shopping. I usually get the tantrum when we are home and she tells me more shopping more shopping. ------------- http://lilypie.com">

I agree with Liz. I leave Xanda home or I do it the day he is at daycare. Also leave DP at home, as he often getsall pouty when I tell him he can't have something because it is not on the list.

We don't usually have problems out shopping with Kryssi, although there are times where we'll be in a little shop and she wants to walk independently, so I get to her level and say that she is not to go outside. She is to stay inside. If she goes outside, I will put her in the trolley. And guess what she does?!?! Yup!!! But after a few minutes of the confinement I do often give her a second chance (once she has settled down).
She has recently started the carseat fussing though, usually it's when she is tired or maybe her nappy needs a change? I usually just bribe her with a cracker (we ALWAYS have something to eat packed with us, these days, with 3!), as in, come on Kryssi you need to go in your seat and then you can have a cracker. Then I force if necessary and of course she's right as rain once she's strapped in! -------------  |

Maya was always great in the supermarket or out shopping.
Gremlins are a living nightmare. I put them in the twin trolley and they bite/hit/scratch each other or try to commit suicide over the side of the trolley. I have to park the trolley in the middle of the aisles or else they reach out and help themselves to things off the shelves. I give them cocktail sausages, bananas and pikelets on the way around, when they've had enough they throw them on the floor. They are a two toddler demolition crew. Lord help me, I will *never* get out of the house on my own with the four of them! ------------- Maya Grace (28/02/03)
