Elle is 22 months and has always had high sleep needs. She had a fantastically regular 2 to 3 hour nap from 12pm on. However, for the last 3 weeks, it's been all over the place. 20mins some days, 3 hours other days.
At present, she wakes for the day just before 8 and at 2pm is still going strong but by 3 is soooooo tired she has to have a nap. If I put her down before 2, she refuses to nap some days and yet other days will do 3 hours. Yesterday was 20mins. If I put her down after 2.30, she will sleep for 2.5 hours but then she is not ready for bed until closer to 9 She always has an unsettled night if she does down any later than 7.45pm. If I keep her up all day OR she naps less than 40mins, she gets majorly overtired and inconsolable, gets night terrors and spends hours awake at night. This suggests to me she still needs her sleep. Is this inconsistent patch developmental? A sign she is going to drop the nap soon? Just her pushing the boundaries? ------------- Mummy to Gabrielle and Ashley |

Yeah I wondered if we just need to get really strict with the times for a while until her body gets back into the rhythm. The less she sleeps during the day the worse her night is [generally]. ------------- Mummy to Gabrielle and Ashley |

Just spoke to my MIL who is looking after her today and at 2.50pm she is still refusing to nap...
I wonder if she is just trying it on? She seems to be pushing all the other boundaries ATM too. What do I do? ------------- Mummy to Gabrielle and Ashley |

I have been doing the same as Jess and have always pretty much kept Ollie in a routine with his day sleep times and bed time at night and it has worked for us 95% of the time except occassionally if someone like my sister or mum looks after him his sleeping patterns tend to change but otherwise mostly stays the same.

Gremlins sometimes do that, they miss their nap coz we are out and about and then they don't even seem tired later on, but they usually end up having a crappy night afterwards. -------------  Maya Grace (28/02/03)

Well it is now 4.15 and I have a very very over-happy toddler here who is running around in circles and doing Hi-Fi dances. She has just spent the last 5 minutes solid babbling at me in some very odd language without any pauses and all I understood was something about cats, poppa, bison, a pink peg and twinkle twinkle (!?!?!?!). I suspect, given the babble she is very very overtired! LOL. Cute though,
I suspect she cried one day at nap time and since Nana got her up she has learned that crying gets results. I don't do cry-it-out though so this could be an interesting habit to break! ------------- Mummy to Gabrielle and Ashley |

Yeap I think you right (assuming I'm correct that she isn't actually ready to drop the nap).

After her first ever day of no nap yesterday, Elle has slept from 6.30pm to 9am and is STILL sleeping! Argh. Guess we won't have a nap today either.
I think I'm going to have to start waking her in the mornings otherwise we will have no routine which means it is hard to make any plans. ------------- Mummy to Gabrielle and Ashley |

At least she slept through though - (looking quickly for the bright side!!) Leah slept from 6.45pm till 7.15am and is now running around out on the deck, was hoping for a sleep today but not sure how that is going to go!! but off to try! -------------
