Hi
Does anyone know anything about lipiodol? Apparently its a kind of oil that they flush your uterus with and it promotes implantation of the embryo. I was reading an article recently that its good for people with unexplained fertility or endo and that it is available privately in Auckland. Does anyone know which clinic.
I have been ttc since March 2007 and am almost 36. We are just in the process of being referred to a fertility specialist. Would have done it earlier but we conceived in Jan and miscarried and we were hoping we'd get pregnant again quickly.

Hi Vanillabean I tried the lipidol flush feb last year and I am in the unexplained group as well.
Unfortunately still trying so didn't work for me but I was referred by my specialist at Fertility Associates in Auckland and it was done at a radiology place near Cornwall Park - can't remember the name sorry.
If you have a look at the Nuture website they sometimes run trials and you may be able to get it done through them but I decided to pay for it about $700-800 I think as we were moving down to NP and it would have been my only chance to do it as there are only a couple of days early in your cycle that they do the procedure it's a hystosalpinogram but they flush lipidol through the tubes instead of the dye. Any questions let me know.

Hi Vanillabean
I had it as I have endometriosis and got pregnant with Lucy the same month, so I was one of the success stories.
Prior to having it, you generally need to have dye studies done to ensure your tubes are clear already, and also have swabs done to ensure you don't have any infections.
Neil Johnson is the person who does it. He used to work at Auckland Gynaecology Group.
I've just found his details listed on this website now:

By the way I highly recommend him as a Gyn. Really knows how to put you at ease.

You typically only need to have it done once, though I know that some people have gone back for a second treatment.
I was referred by a friend who also had endometriosis and nor was she eligible for IVF as her eggs were considered too old. She had the smallest chance of conceiving and had been ttc for 5 years. She conceived within 6 weeks of lipiodol flushing, and then had her second baby 19 months later with no further treatments required. I am now pregnant with number 2 and didn't require any further treatment.
I believe it's most effective during the first 6 months following treatment, but can continue to be effective for some time after that also.

Definitely do check out the Nurture website too (nuture.org.nz) they have some personal stories, as well as info on trials they are running. I'd never heard of it till OHbaby! started doing some work with Nurture...

Hi everyone,
I have a question about lipido treatment. I have been through 2 IVF cycles unsuccessful. A girlfriend of my gave me an article in the Herald 04/05/08 about lipidol treatment.
I am really interested in trying this myself. Can you please tell me how I go about it.
My partner and I are just starting out another IVF cycle but would really like to try lipidol treatment first.

Hi Sollie
You'll need to contact Neil Johnson. His phone number and details are:

Good luck, I'd love to hear how you get on. In terms of the cost, it's a relatively cheap fertility treatment compared to many. It cost us $700 when we had it done in 2006.

Hi Scarecrowfarm
We went and had the lipiodol treatment done a couple of weeks ago.
Your right Dr Neil Johnston is a cool gyn.
We are hopeful.
