This is a question for parents with one child (or for the first child of parents with multiple kids).

How does your toddler interact with other kids? My doc asked me this today. Elle doesn't really play with other kids but she hasn't had much experience with other kids and she is only 17mths so I assume that parallel play is more common than interactive play?? Elle get's upset around other kids as she is used to having toys etc all to herself and other kids tend to want what she has / not what to share what they have. This seems totally normal to me though...how are they supposed to know how to share and interact until they've LEARNED how to.

Based on Elle's history and my docs knowledge of kids, she thinks she will possibly have some struggles in processing her emotions and in socialising so was giving me some tips about that. She DOESN'T think she has autism or ADHD (we don't think so either!!!) but does think she lies somewhere on the spectrum in that her reactions to the world around her are not "typical". She said that most kids she sees like Elle are totally fine, they just have trouble interpreting the world and are a bit "quirky" as they grow up.

This is good news really. Elle did / does have irritability issues and is quite over-reactive to certain things but is generally a totally normal kid. I'm kinda glad to have a rough idea of what is going on so we know how to move forward.

Sorry!! Lots of info :)

I've noticed Seb is alot more gentle than other kids - He'll wait for someone to get off the slide, whereas other kids will push past, and he's even been known to hug strange little kids in playgrounds I'm almost surprised he hasn't offered anyone a kiss yet!

I suppose Jack was a bit different because at that age Caprece was born but before that he played next to other kids and didn't like it if they took his toys and would take other kids toys but didn't really play with them. Does she go to playgroup or daycare or anything? We have just started playcentre and the change in Jack has been amazing and so quick, he has a lot more tolerance towards other kids and isn't so pushy and kicky lol

Hannah is hugely possessive (depending on how much she has slept) but I assume this is within the ranges of normal - possibly closer to the irratible side of normal but still!

At that age I would expect that she would 'parallel play' instead of playing with other kids. It's only now that Hannah is starting to interact more. When we have issues we just encourage 'taking turns' and *most* of the time it works well.

gabriel's kindy teacher was saying the other day that they dont start to play with each other till about 4...

Elle's behaviours sounds normal to me - toby doesnt like to share and he isnt an only child!

I would have thought it sounded normal too. It is great that you have seen the doctor and that it is nothing major.

Gina interacts with kidlets at daycare but don't think it's play as such. Just the other day I was watching her approach another bub and hand him one of the little monkeys she was holding and he handed her a hammer back Totally cute but not really play as such, they went their separate ways later.
I have also seen a kid snach a toy from her and she didn't cry but will hold on tight to anything she really wants so have seen her hold onto her toys when someone has tried to snach them away. She seemed mostly OK with sharing toys from the start at daycare even though she had never shared them at home but it's possibly related to her going to daycare this early?

She's too young for playing together and you're right - parallel play is as much as you can ask for at her age.  I'd been told 3 is the earliest that they move past this (but ah, don't we all get told different things anyway!).

We just started mainly music and play group this week and we do creche at church on Sundays so I'm confident we are doing all we can to provide her opportunities to play with other kids.

I wasn't concerned about her play...it was just the docs questions that prompted me to think about it.

:)

Obviously, as with everything, temperament will play apart. Some of us are really gentle and naturally sharing and caring and others of us are less so.

I notice at when I pick James up at daycare that their all parallel play and only a few times I have actually seen James actually playing with someone but most of the time their all kind of doing the same thing but not IYGWIM.

ella does a lot of play at daycare and i have seen a number of occasions her and a girl Sienna who is now 18 months old playing what we call the pillo game...sienna taught ella (or she picked it up) and they throw a large pillow on floor and crawl to it or walk to it and throw themselves on it...is a very deliberate game and they try and beat each other to it...ella and i now play it at home too on floor with a strawberry shortcake pillow i bought just for that....started as parallel type play but this is def a learnt game now.

she also interacts at dc but we have noticed the solid walkers take toys off ella...and she has started to snatch them off the bubbas now...guess its her turn UGH! sharing is hopefully a skill she will master....

Ah yes, but hanging out with the gremlins might teach her bad habits!
