DD has been toilet trained (wee's) for 6 + months. Poo's on the other hand is a different story.

She holds on to her poo until she can no-longer and then does it in her knickers or until she has her nappy on ovenight. She says she is ok mummy -or its OK mummy I do it in my knickers? If I see her straining I take her to the toilet/potty and she has a hysterical fit and then refuses to go. She has now started kindy and on the last 5 times she has been there she has done a poo in her knickers the last 4 times and says to me its ok as they change me.

How can I get her round from this? She isnt constipated and does a poo everyday.

Im now starting to get a bit frustrated by it all which Im sure isnt helping the whole thing but I just cant see how to get round this.

Any advise or ideas would help...

How old is she? It just sounds like she is not confident to push while on the loo. My eldest took a while to relax long enough to let it out. I wonder if she senses your nervousness. I dunno... I think I'd be inclined to put her in nappies again for a few weeks (but still take her to the loo for wees) and then try again.

my boy took nearly ten months to be poo trained...

if she poos at a certain time each day can you put her on the toilet then..with my son it was always (well 90%) at bed time. so we made a rule that he had to sit on the toilet before we put his nappy on - and that was after bath and story time...

or have you tried a sticker chart?

There is no daily pattern. sometimes first thing in the morning and sometimes last thing at night (and any time in between).

She is 3 years old.

She does know when she is doing a poo but just says she is OK. If I then try to put her on the toilet she clams up and holds it in and goes hysterical.

Have you tried the hole in the nappy thing? Ie: start with saying to her ok you'll put a nappy on her, tell her that "you can do it in your nappy, BUT you have to sit on the toilet to do it..." let her go in her nappy while sitting on the toilet. Do this for a few days and let her get the hang of it. it's about her being comfortable with going on the toilet and getting used to the surroundings, while giving her that familiar thing of her nappy.

Next, let her do the same but have a nappy with a hole cut in it in the right place, (ok, so, it has to be one prepared eariler, have a few on hand) so that the poos will actually fall into the toilet, put a bit of toilet paper in the toilet first as sometimes they get scared that it will splash them. again, its still the familiarity of the nappy, but getting her used to having it end up in the toilet, once she's got that downpacked it tends to just be the last move to help her realise that well, she's pooing, and it's going in the toilet anyway, so no need for the nappy cos WOW she's a big girl, etc etc.

just something that you could try. sometimes its just taking the child's approach to things and using a bit of imagination and trickery to turn it into the desired outcome that you want.

Janine that sounds like a brillant idea. I am going to use that at work when asked the poo tt question as it is a really common question for the 3yr check. Best of luck Rosewood with DD

diane leyv uses a similar technique but she recommends the first step as getting them to go in the appropriate room first then sitting on the toilet etc...
