What is a normal 'consistency' for toddler poo?
Hadnt really thought about it before, but was just on EBB Allergy section and someone mentioned there toddler never had solid poos. Got me thinking that maybe there is some other food that Han is intolerant of. We know she is allergic to dairy, eggs and peanuts. I also know that she gets yuckky runny poos from soy yoghurt, even though her milk is soy. And I am aware that many kids who are allergic to dairy can become soy intolerant as well. She hardly ever has a solid poo that just rolls off into the toilet, they are more squishy and soft than that - sorry, sorry!! Also for those of you with littlies on Neocate, how much is it per tin before you get your special authority number? Am thinking ahead to when this baby is here and I want to have a tin around for just in case, but dont want to wait until bubs is here to get it. I think the neocate is $45 a tin. I'm not entirely sure though, mine is due to arrive tomorrow and I'm pretty sure when I asked the Karicare helpline that was what they said it would cost if I went to get some without funding.
Spencer has an allergy to cow's milk protein and from what I understand that normally causes constipation and lactose intolerance normally causes runny poos and vomiting. And yes we were told not to give him soy as a child with cow protein allergy is likely to have a reaction to soy if introduced too early. Rice milk is the only thing I have heard is ok to give. Lactose intolerance is caused by not having/ or not having enough of a certain enzyme and isn't an allergy. (just in case, I expect you already know that though) -------------

We recently asked a similar question of our Plunket nurse. Briona has been having a lot of 'softies' lately and DH wanted to check she wasn't getting too much fibre (fruit, porridge) or anything. As far as we know she has no allergies. The problem though was that she had got a nappy rash and the softies were seemingly making it difficult for that to clear up. Anyway, her question was, is it formed in any way or is it almost liquid? In Briona's case, she sometimes has roll-offs, more likely they are soft but at least some of it will shake off. But it's certainly not watery or diahhrea-ish. (Man I can never spell that word LOL!). So I guess that's the rule of thumb. PS Briona is 2 1/4. -------------  |

lol, yeah it is hard to spell! I guess some of it does roll off so its probably ok. Maybe too much fruit! 
Cuppatea, Hannah never has anything with any dairy in it whatsoever (just forked out $198.60 today for a new EpiPen  ) so I know for definite its not that. And shes only ever had dairy anything twice in her life so wouldnt know if it does anything to her bowels or not. She has been on soy milk since she was 12 months. Rice milk doesnt have enough protein and something else (cant remember!) for toddlers, so if they cant have soy milk they need special formula instead. Thanks for that about the neocate price too.
Also just in case you need this info one day, I was reading on EBB that there is a toddler formula you can get subsidised now - starts with V (Vivotex or something like that) - as Neocate Advanced for toddlers isnt subsidised by Pharmac. | toby doesnt always have firm poos too - actually most times they are yucky squishy things that wont roll of a nappy...sounds very normal to me. |

Ella is the same.
She's not allergic to anything that I know of and although she is a big fan of most fruits, doesn't have more than average amounts in a day. She goes once a day normally and sometimes they are normal consistency but usually they're soft as opposed to sausages  ------------- Mel, Mummy to E: 6, B: 4 and:

Neocate unsubsidised is $86 a tin, that's what we had to pay for the tin I put away while I was pregnant with the gremlins. But I'm sure your friend who lives in Palmy who has a one year old (not mentioning any names  ) would sell you a tin or two for just in case ------------- Maya Grace (28/02/03)

He he... I was just thinking that as I saw your post up the top, Aimee! Don't you dare pay that much for a tin, that's just crazy - I'll just drop a couple over next time I see you (won't be selling them - seems a little too black-market for me! We'll just call it an unusual kind of prezzie for the new baby! He he). Thanks for the heads-up on the toddler one, too... I didn't know Neocate wasn't funded for toddlers! Yee-ouch. What do they think people are earning to be able to afford an $86 tin that lets face it, for a child with a healthy appetite should only last 2 days! It's mental. By the way - did you see the Allergy Today e-mail asking for contributions from parents who have used Neocate?
