Ok ladies I have packed my bags.....but I have some questions.
What did you pack for hospital that you never used so was waste of space....or what did you not pack that you wish you did???
I have read the Maternity notes and then the bounty book and then some pregnancy magazine and they all have one or two things that are not in the other......I am confused.

i packed too many nappies as the hospital i went to supplied them all while we were there. the clothes i packed for jack just went along for the ride also as we kept him in the hospital gown until he came home.
good luck roksana!!! i can't wait to hear about your new bubby!!

I'm not really sure what I found was a waste of space but I found it was really good to remember a razor as I was finally able to reach my legs! As well as some nice talc and body wash and make up. My mum suggested I pack all this stuff and I thought I really wouldn't need it and wouldn't have time or wouldn't want to use it but it turned out after giving bith my daughter was a sleep in her fathers arms so I got a chance to really pamper myself it helped me feel brand new to face the new phase of learning to be a mum.

We didn't need anything because I was in hospital for 2 and a half hours before Josef was born and we came home 2 hours after!! Stay at home as long as you can stand it before going in Roksana, it is so much better! The only thing we used was clothes for Joey to come home in and a blankie for him in the car (and car seat obviously) plus a nappy because Wellington Hospital doesn't supply them... Also my hubby ate a few muesli bars and drank some water.

we packed music (didn't use), lollies (husband and midwife ate), powerade (husband drank), massage oil (never saw the light of day), dressing gown (too hot in the hospital for it), baby stuff (used hospital until he came home), a tennis ball (for some massage thing I read about and promptly fogot), camera (we actually used)

ha ha I'm with you lizzle,
I was complety useless and hadn't even packed a spare pair of undies. The baby clothes were too big and I packed nothing for me to leave in - as I went to the hospital in my pyjamas I looked a fright going home - but not that any of that mattered. And as for the cameras my husband and I were so in awe and blown away by our wee man and the whole birth process if the midwife hadn't picked up the camera and taken the photos I dont' think we would have had any!
Water was my saving grace, and someone recently gave me a can of evian body spray which may come in handy - who knows!

LOL Liz....I like that!
I know Ana I will try and stay home as long as I can...but might have to kill hubby in the process. Ive been getting major pain down there (every time bub moves) and hubby is like...Oh is it time? Oh are you okay? oh....ARRRGGGGG SHUT UP! I will tell you when it is time....but babe this is first time for you to..how would you know?.....I give up!!

Hi guys! Just wanted to add - take a spare film for your camera. Take HEAPS of pics! even during labour/birth. THis may seem like the last thing you feel like doing now or at the time, but at least you have them if you ever want to look. YOu will never get that moment in time back again. Even if its not till your next pregnancy you want to refer to them - youve still got them! ALso take heaps between baby just out and the first glance you get of her etc - they are awesome to have. Also take spare pillows - hospitals are always short - a tri pillow is especially good. GOod Luck ps get photos developed at one of those send away places - saves any embarrassment!

I took a huuuuuge bottle of water to the hospital, only to discover that National Womens supplied it.
I did take clothes, but nothing half decent to go home in.
Heaps of knickers too, coz I seemed to be constantly changing them. And a blanket for Maya (I didn't take one, and they ended up wrapping her in a hospital blanket to go home.

Roksana. . .I know how you feel every time I make the smallest noise moving Josh always says "is it time?". Last night was the worst I kept having painful contractions and he'd notice my breathing would change and every time he'd say "are you having a contraction? are you? is the baby coming? should I call the midwife? Am I ment to boil some water or something?" It was driving me nuts. Spending most of my labour at home would probably have him so stressed out ringing the midwife every 5 minutes, I would be the one telling him to breath through it!! I must admit it is kind of cute seeing a grown man turn into a scared little puppy sometimes. I'd probably be the same if the rolls were reversed.

I went out and bought half a dozen black undies before I had Chloe but I found that since I had grazes I had to change my pad every hour I didn't really need so many. 48hours is the standard stay for a first time mum I think so I'd probably take 4 to be on the safe side. My midwife said that if the birth goes well and baby is feeding well then you can go home usually within 4hours. They keep you for 4 hours just to make sure no severe bleeding starts or anything strange happens.

lol funny.I know you plan to go home as soon as but take stuff in case you need to stay - never to frighten but if you need a c setion or something goes wrong the last thing you will want is hubby having to go home to grab things you didn't pack. the prob with disposables is that yep - sometimes you go to put them on and baby will poo or something before you even get it done up.. although the nappies probably shouldn't be too overly wet really at first but take maybe another half dozen - if all else fails you can always use the hospital cloth ones however much you don't want to. lol
we packed everything, and used pretty much nothing... um, what i found great this time around was a pump sipper bottle - last time they gave me water in a cup with a straw in labour and mike had to hold it for me - this time i had my sipper bottle - and could just grab it when i needed it, have a quick drink and chuck it back on the table - no worries about being slow and careful to avoid spilling - and like the others have said - razors, maybe some nice face cream etc -- oooh lip balm the air conditioning up in those places can make your lips crack so fast! um toothbrush etc - always the thing people forget cos they grab the bag at the last minute and forget to chuck in the toothbrush - buy a new one and a small travel tube of paste and put them in there now so you don't forget. also this time i took a yummy body wash that smelt like strawberries - cos when you are bleeding and leaking and sore - it's nice to have something like that to make you feel good. only other thing i can think of is a note pad and pen - to write down birth time and weight cos sometimes hubby might forget or you might be a bit groggy to remember exactly.. also you can write down on that what times baby fed last and what side etc so you don't forget as well. the reality is - no matter what you pack you will still probably forget something.. that's just the way it is.
here you go, i ramble on again.

I just read the other posts and saw you are planning to go home soon after. Just in case, i would take 2 pairs of undies (and allow for 2 pairs each day you are in if you have to stay) 2 maternity bras, ask your lmc if the hosp provide babies nighties and naps while you are int here, a going home outfit for baby and 2 nappies for the trip home, a blankie, nice outfit for you. I also found, like lots of theothers have said a nice perfumed body wash and lotion and even shampoo etc will make you feel a million dollars. I shouted myself a leg and bikini wax before I had him, abut 3 weeks, so no worries about razor! Made me feel good, too. The hospital I was in (Wairau, Blenhiem)provided sanitary pads and let me take home the opened packet i was using (big hideous surfboards!)once again, check with your lmc what the hosp provides. OOOH!!! Getting exciting!!

ooh, iread that smelly bodywash means the baby could get "confused" as they want you to smell like well, i don't know. but not ure if thats true or not. just remembered I also packed soup. I had Jake at 1:51pm, had no breakfast or lunch and was starving. and missed lunch.

yeah i heard that to Liz that babies prefer to smell YOU rather than some bottled fragrance.
I was in the hospital for 5 days cos i couldnt get the feeding thing sussed and both me and bubs were getting frustrated and in the end i practically beged a nurse to talk me thru it and wot do ya no it worked first pop!! remember to ask if u r unsure/frustrated and i am sure theres a lovely nurse sumwhere to help u out.breastfeeding is a learned art it doesnt come naturally(specially for most first time mums)

Breastfeeding doesn't always come naturally second time around either! I had all sorts of problems with Josiah, until I asked for help and the nurse pointed out that he was still learning too and wasn't rolling his body in towards me yet.

Ohhhh I managed to shave my legs last night.....Yay...I am more flexible than I thought!!! He he ha ha
I have packed body lotion but just normal unscented one.
I have a doc appt and then see my midwife today so I will ask her exactly what middlemore provides. When I went in there with my 18 week bleeding they gave me nice thin pads to use (didnt work for long as they fill up quickly) and later when I was moved to a ward they gave me those horrible looking thick pillow like pads....I brought them home as I never used it....I doubt I will! I am taking two packs of maternity pads with me so I hope that will be enough. I also have one spare pack at home as well as my usuall regular pads.

those big horrible san pads are quite good for just after the birth cause you bleed soo much and you can pack a couple in, after tho (say the first day or two) then you are better off with yours.

roksana you should be able to get to see what the maternity ward is like before hand, but you are prob better going to stay at botany after...as a first timer i think it is important to not go home too early and stay somewhere where you can get support for breastfeeding and other stuff that comes up that you arent aware of... if going to botany tho you have to go within a certain time after the birth, not sure what it is tho.

Yah...seen the wards at Middlemore and must say not the best....however on our tour there the midwife asked us if we would trf...as they encourage it...I have to tell them when I come in. So I told hubby that he has to let them know that we wanna go to botany. If I am fine I can take my own car because waiting for Ambo is a long process......I was thinking of staying at the hospital for atleast one day/night. We will see how we go.
Fingers crossed that I have a normal delivery.... . I will ask my midwife re the trf time thing...thanks Deb.

I agree that you shouldn't let the hospital rush you home but on the other hand I had a lot of trouble getting used to breast feeding, just the positioning and I found that the nurses just were more forceful than helpful so after 4days of hospital I was just getting depressed but they didn't want me to go home. In the end I discharged myself and rang a lactation consultant to come to my house which helped as I was more relaxed. So after all that rambling what I mean to say is don't let them make you feel like you can't leave. Because of the way I was treated by the nurses(this was in blenheim) I'm sure this is part of the reason I ended up with post natal depression.

Oh and I found I went through a whole box of breast pads in the first two days after my milk came in.
I found when it came to maternity san pads they weren't so good because most of them don't come with wings so I didn't feel so comfortable using them. The libra goodnights seem to be the best as they are longer with wings and also come in ultra thin. If you read the small print they are maternity grade anyway. The hospital matress sized ones are good because of the extra padding for any brusing or grazes.
I hope that helps a little.
Last night I also went a little mad and somehow shaved my legs then I think I went over board when I painted my toenails!

I had great experience at Wairau, but talking to other mums in my coffee group etc, i would say i am one of a few, so its a shame your experience wasn't good, I hope you are feeling better now, with the PND.
I found the lactation consultant, Liz, brilliant because Jake din't feed for about 6 days, he had a naso gastic tube, which was distressing, but I finally got him breastfeeding (thanks to Liz and my midwife) at 6 weeks, aftr 6 weeks of expresing and bottle feeding, and now he does it so well!

I am taking a box of those J&J Breast Pads (Changed my mind last night and packed the whole box). I havent bought the libra good nights but the maternity ones....I hope the work...it says extra long with wings...blah blah. I always had heavy bleeding the first few days of my period and havent had a period 4 months prior to getting pregnant...so I am sure I will need loads of pads. Might end up using those horrible mattress ones...I better pack them tonight!

Hrmmm I was just thinking of what I used during labour... I don't know if Middlemore supply them, but a wheatbag was fantastic. I ended up using two of them because every time they took it away to heat it up I would almost cry. And then I made them put one on my back and one on my front, which left no more wheatbags for in between warming!!! arghhhh. it was terrible.
also had massage wax stuff which i used heaps of - "Mum, massage my front... no my back.... no both... no GET OFF ME!!!" hehe
Itchy nipples could be a sign that colostrum/milk is sitting there waiting. I get that when I'm waiting for Han to feed. I really hope breastfeeding goes well for you. It was hell for me for a while, but I'm so glad I stuck with it!

I have been getting itchy nipples too ever since this morning. I have no idea what it means I don't remember it happening with Chloe. I've haven't leaked at all and I did heaps when I was pregnant with Chloe. I hope this is normal, I'd hate to have problems with breast feeding.
Some lady in a shop today suggested walking up hill to bring on labour. She walked up and down the very steep Napier Hill for 3hours and an hour late she went into labour. I might have to do that if bubs goes overdue.
I also found Liz in Blenheim very good. I was 17 when I had Chloe so all the nurses were very pushy with the way I had to do everything and at the time my midwife had heaps of other babies to deliver so I didn't get much help from her. The post natal depression lasted for a bit over 10months because I just put on a brave face in front of everyone. It wasn't until a nurse that was giving Chloe an immunisation said "so how are things going?" that I completely broke down in tears. She got me counselling through plunket which eventually got me through it. I must admit I am terrified of getting depression this time. To try and avoid the hospital scene I'm having bubs in a private maternity ward instead of a hospital.

Good luck to you!
I was and still am terrified of gettting PND as I have suffered from depression since I was about 17. So far, everything is going ok, but I still take a step back every now and then to ask myself how everything is REALLY going. I have found that I start to go down that road when I am putting myself under heaps of pressure (and dosen't that come with being a mum?!). At least you will have some ideas of your warning signs now, so you can get help early on in the peice if you need to. I hope everything goes well for you!

I found after I had Chloe I didn't get out much because I was always so tired which I think continued my sprial in depression. So this time round I've decided that if I start to feel too much pressure then I am going to through the kids in a pram and walk. Also since I don't know too many people in Napier as we have no long moved her I am going to put a list on the fridge of a different playgroup or coffee morning for every day of the week so I can focus on something if I'm feeling down.
My advice to you is if you start getting down or thing seem a bit overwhelming then give plunket a call. They have a lovely lady that makes house calls to visit and be there. She helped me to no end. I also feel like if I talked to someone about it when I just had "baby blues" rather than hiding it I probably wouldn't have ended up depressed for so long.
Goodluck, I'm sure you will continue to be fine. The first 3months is the hardest(at least until the terrible 2's!) So you have made it though the worst

Just catching up on all these new posts. In Dannevirke we are encouraged to stay for around 5 days. Was planning on that, but with Daniels mum being in Welly I might leave a bit earlier if things are going well so we can go and visit with baby. Sounds a bit scary taking a few day old baby on a road trip to Wellington, but his mum will be over the moon to see it and hopefully will help her get better quicker
Have had my bag packed for weeks - need to add a razor, sounds like a great idea!

I travelled the road from Napier to Wellington heaps when Chloe was a tiny baby and she was fine. I found after an hour or so she would get pretty upset and I couldn't work out why then I realised she was getting a sore bum from the carseat so stopping a a cafe or something and giving bubs some tummy time made the trip a lot easier. Your just lucky you don't have jump on the ferry for 3hours after the drive like we did so many times.
We also found the trip took a lot longer when Chloe was tiny because she seemed so delicate Josh would pull over and let any cars behind us pass even if they were only doing 80k! I've never seen him be such a nervous driver! It was so cute!

lol about the scented stuff - i dunno how - but it smelt nice - but it didn't make me smell any different - how confusing is that.. i spose also though - really, if you use what you are going to continue using day to day then the baby will get used to that as your smell?
with the breastfeeding thing - alot of hospitals have lactation consultants if you need help and some have breastfeeding talks each day - (palmy does anyway) first time i couldn't be bothered going but this time i made an effort to getup and go and was so grateful - even now sometimes b/f is hard to get the hang of - you just think you have it sorted and baby starts doing weird stuff and you go "huh?!"

Josh drives a lot in his job and is very used to driving to Welly as I'm from Picton and my family is there. But as soon as Chloe was in the car he looked at every car as if it was out to get us. I'm sure he started to sweat a bit when we got into Welly, it didn't help that it was peak traffic! He's never been one to get road rage but when a car cut us off on the motorway I couldn't believe the things that came out of his mouth Putting a man in a car with his new born baby means a 100k zone turns into a 50k zone and even thats too fast!

I found right from day 1 I had to be in a quiet room because Chloe would get distracted and just come off which was frustrating as well as giving me sore nipples

I've joined heaps of coffee groups and stuff to get out of the house. I'm the first out of my friends here in Blenners to have a baby, so I was worried I'd be stuck at home bored, getting down and depressed, so I've made an effort to meet other mums, and I don't think i have ever been so busy in my life, makes me wonder what I did to fill in my time before baby!lol
Hey new mums to be, good luck with breastfeeding, it is worth all the effort, it is such a wondeful special time for you and baby. Anyone can give babe a cuddle or a bottle, but no one can give a special mum cuddle with milk, its such a wonderful thing!

i remember wondering why anyone would WANT to bottle feed when they could breastfeed. the midwife kept talking about health, blah blah, but all i could think IT'S FREE!!! Then again, i was lucky Jake was such a good eater. Hope B2 is as good!

Helen, I leaked lots with Kiya before she was born and not at all with Josiah, and I haven't had any problems breastfeeding (at least, none relating to milk supply).
You know, great as breastfeeding is, sometimes its just not possible. My niece and nephew are violently lactose intolerant, so my sister-in-law had to bottle feed both of them soy-based formula. Just cutting dairy from her diet wasn't enough, as both the kids are also allergic to egg and nuts.

Oooooooh Roksana, getting so close!
I felt sorry for the poor lactation consultant that had to see me in Nat Womens when I had mastitis. They wouldn't let me go home till I could feed off the infected side, but it was so sore, and I was so feisty at not being able to feed properly, and I tore her head off. She was trying to show me how to latch Maya properly and I just lost it and said "Well if it's so easy, you bl*ody feed her then!".
Of course the infection eventually subsided, and I managed to latch her and get her feeding (after 9 days in hospital!!!), and when I got home I felt so guilty about how nasty I was to the lactation consultant that I rang and apologised to her.

hey was just going to say about the hospitals having lactating consults (i was in palmy 2 so not sure about other hosp) but janine beat me to it lol the only thing i would look out for is they really push - i mean push you to bf and i spent 2 weeks trying to get one of my twins to bf - it was awful. i dont know how many times the nurses in neonats found me hiding behind the screens with keegan both of us bawling until i said after 2 weeks of pure stress that i would express and bottle feed him. i nearly throttled the nurse when she said "what a good idea - we have been waiting for you to come to that conclusion". so anyway after my moan what i was meaning to get at was there are other options for you as someyimes the hosp staff can be abit too much pro bf to the point where you almost feel guilty if you dont suceed at it.

They pressured me to breastfeed it was horrible, I knew I really wanted to but it was just too stressful trying to do. It wasn't until I got home that I expressed and bottle fed Chloe which settled her enough for me to be able to relax and learn how to breastfeed. From her second feed at home onwards I had no problems breastfeeding. I'm so glad I didn't give up trying. It's just so easy not having to worry about heating the milk or cleaning the bottles not to mention the cost of formula these days.

tell me about it.. i will probably have to have ayja on bottle by my next placement as it won't be as flexible as my maternity one was. that really sucks cos ayja is feeding well and i'm gonna have to put her on the bottle and loose my supply just cos of that - have thought about still feeding during the times that i am with her.. but last time, expressing was very stressful and took alot out of me so formula might be the go.
hey has anyone had to cut down their feeds for any reason... and has anyone had success with building them back up again... i mean after the placement it would be nice to be able to resume full feeding if possible for a few more weeks - that is... until my 6 week placement at the end of january. am just wondering how successful i would be to give bottles while on placment and feed all other times, then resume full feeds after each placement.... do you think it would be too much hard work or just a matter of getting her to feed often - as if she were having a growth spurt... to build my supply back up.

I've never tried to build up again with feeds after cutting down but when Chloe was getting older and on soilds I was down to only feeding her twice, once in the morning and once at night. Anyway she came down with a bad flu at able 13months and wasn't drinking very well with her cup so I started breastfeeding her as much as she would take. The next day I woke up it felt as if my milk had come in all over again and I was very full and leaking everywhere but it then took a while for my supply to ajust to only a few feeds a day again. So anyway after that experience I think the milk supply is pretty adaptable to change. So you should be fine but you may have to spend a day or two feeding or expressing a lot to stimulate milk production again.

hi - just wanted to say YES you can build your supply up again - it should be easy. Just keep b/fing when u can while on placement (express if u want to, even if its just once per day) that will help to maintain current supply and make it quicker to get it back up again. when u r ready just increase b/fs up again slowly (1 less bottle a day). the only problem u could have is if bubs starts to prefer the bottle and wont take the breast - but its well worth it to try. Also night feeds build up milk supply faster (because related hormones are higher at night) good luck!

I had the same thing as Helen, Maya was 8 mths old and down to 4 small feeds a day, then she got sick and couldn't keep any food down so I had to feed her hourly and my milk came flooding back. So I think you should probably be able to build it up again, it will just take time and patience. Will Ayja be on solids by then? Coz when Maya started at daycare I used to have to go and b/f her there, but once she started having a decent amount of solids I could give her a huge feed when I dropped her off and another when I picked her up, so she didn't have to have a bottle (not that she would take one anyway )

kewl that's good to hear - i plan to feed still at nights and when i am with her. have been trying solids with her on and off but she is not too fussed about them so haven't really pushed too much. I will be working 8 hr shifts so she wil definately need a few feed while i am gone - dunno if it is morning or night shift - if night shift she might only nedd a couple and possibly i mite see if she can be brought up again for dinner time feeds. if daytime then probably not much chance of anything. thanks for your help ladies - will keep at it i think and just introduce the bottle over the next few weeks as need be - she is pretty variable in her feeding anyway - one day she might feed lots and lots all day, the next she might only want a feed 4 times and have a huge feed each time so with that in mind my supply is used to be chopped and changed i spose.

Firstly I looked up so many sites and had a huge list of things I should take!
but I ended up with things I didnt even take out of my bag and other things I had to get brought up to me..
It didnt help that Id left packing my bag to the last minute and dh had to pack most of it the minute before we left!Heres What Id took and what I should of packed and had to get brought up to me!(What ever you do pack it early, dont keep putting it off otherwise you'll end up like me and not have it ready!)
For Me:
- Clothes - A couple of sizes, as I found even my early maternity clothes too big and had to 'roll' the top of my pants to keep them up!(Im talking about clothes to go home in!)
- Knickers - Dark Colors
- Toiletries! - Soap or Bodywash, Flannel, HairBrush, Hairties(I forgot mine, I was so annoyed!), Toothbrush and Toothpaste, A Razor!, Makeup - if you wear ir, Moisturiser - I found my skin wen quite dry from the hospital heat!
- Maternity Pads - Although some hospitals give you a packet
- Nursing Pads - these are a must I forgot them and had to get DH to bring them up!
- Socks or Slippers
- Pjs or Nighty - more then one incase you bleed through - horrible thought I know but better being safe then sorry!
- Nursing/Maternity Bras
- Magazines or a Book - I got board!
- Something Sweet! - I had to get DH to get me something sweet to eat
- LipBlam! My lips got very Dry and once again I had to get DH to bring it in
- Nipple Cream - I didnt think Id need it but I soooo did! I had to get mum to buy it for me!
- A Pen! - to fill in the baby registration and also to order your food!
- A Phone Calling Card or have money on your cell phone to ring people!
- A phone/Address book with the people you want to rings numbers!
- Something for your Partner to eat/Drink!
- A Jacket! incase it decides to rain on your way there or home
- This isnt a biggy and can get brought up to you before your about to leave... a bucket or some plactic bags to put your flowers in to stop them from dripping in the car!
- Shoes! this migtht seem obvious but I didnt take any! I went in socks and had to get DH to bring them up!!!!
- Cellphone Charger! my cellphone started beeping at us because of the amount of phonecalls we made!
- Camera - and if its a digital the charger!
For Bubs:
- A few Nappies - Although some Hospitals provide them
- Clothes - Mainly to bring them home in as the hospital may provide you clothes for them while they are there
- Car Seat
- Head Support! - This is a biggy so there head can be supported - we forgot ours and they had to wrapp the blanket up around him!
- Bottle and Formula if Your not going to be Breastfeeding
- A hat! to keep there head warm - you can take it off when they get home.. back in the warmth! - this might be different now its going into summer, but Id take one just in cse as new zealand weather in unpredictable!
I think thats about it.. Ill add more if I think of them
Sorry if Ive rambled on but This is what ive needed/taken with me
