Subject: My foray into cloth nappies

Well, as you know i have two babies. Gabriel is 23 months old and toby is 3 months old. And boy do they fill the garbage bin up with nappies. so i have been seriously looking into the cloth nappy thing. Aimee noticed the napnaps in one of my pics of toby and i have also brought and tried the trial fuzzi bunz. And i thought i would let you know how i was going with them. I also own several old style nappies, i think they call them flats nowadays. i think that all those disposable have spoilt me cause i am really taken with the way fuzzi bunz behave like a disposable in that they dont get bubs bum wet, and the cut is pretty cool too. i wasnt as impressed with the nap naps for that reason. they were very easy to use tho but made my little boys bum seem very bulky and didnt draw the moisture away. have also found a large diff in price for these "pocket nappies". the ones i found ranged in price from $21 to $35 and some come with the inserts and some without. i am going to trial some more types of pocket nappies and have ordered me some swaddlebees. i tried the fuzzi on my big boy today and they did a great job and he looked cool too, so tomorrow i will try him in the nap nap as i think they might be more suitable for him.

anyway that is my novel... thanks emma for showing me how to fold nappies the other day too, that is how unco i am about this whole thing.. oh and tues i am going to see some real nappies (that is the company name) in action so will have somehting else to think about.

thats really interesting. i've been thinking about doing something similar as Jake and B2 will both be in nappies too. And it's sooooo expensive! (even with my mum paying ), so have decided to look into cloth nappies. also, I'll be a housewife for prob two years while I do my teaching diploma, so.....something to think about.

I was thinking about using cloth as well as disposable, just using cloth when I'm at home and using disposables at night and when I go out, so many of my friends are telling me to not even use cloth but I think it will be better on our budget.

Thanks heaps for that Deb.
Next year (once I get a laundry) I am seriously considering doing cloth too. Nice to hear about the disposable to cloth transition and how you found the different brands.
Let us know how it goes with the rest!

Will let you know how it goes on a newborn too soon

Deb, I have a trial FB, trial nap-naps pack, a couple of Down Undies covers, old flat nappies and some muslin flats, and some old Little Rippers. Also have a few 'old-fashioned' Fluffies and wool covers. Have a few insert thingys and also washable and flushable liners. Am planning on using the muslins (pinned or snappied) with liners and covers for newborn, then maybe fitteds with covers when it is a little bigger and will fit sizes for longer, so curious to see how you go with your little one. Also considering prefolds with covers... So many decisions

LOL Nikki, Hannah will be out of nappies by then !

I used the plain old folded flats and they were fine for us. I still have a huge pile of them here for next time round so they have lasted really well. Cost me $90 for 3 dozen from KMart, plus I used plastic overnaps at $3 for 3 pairs from KMart and the J&J liners.

Maybe Maya is hard case, she hasn't had an accident at home now for months but every day at daycare she has at least one.

Well I made my first nappy cover yesterday, and to my surprise it didn't leak when Sophie wore it last night.  It was a bit of a shocker as it was my first attempt.  Am going to make more and replace my weenies I used for Sophie.  I got a really good deal on some waterproof material $2m, and I know it's good as I've used for waterproof overalls for Sophie.  Brought cheap microfleece $3m I think, nice an soft.  But felt ripped off at Spotlight for elastic and velcro, buying those from Greenbeans next time.  But all up the cover proberly only cost $4 to make bargin! lol

Hi there

I have bub's on the way and have just brought a set of Snazzi pant's nappies.
My sister also has them and her daughter is almost one now and she swear's by them.
the cheapest way of using this system is a pre fold and an overnap so i have taken her advice and gone for the same.
so maybe they are worth a look in as well.

I am just waiting on a trial pack from real nappies, I have been using disopsib;es up untill now, but i find I have to use huggies as jake is a heavy piddler and wets thu the cheaper nappies. I'm hoping to use real nappies during the day and just the disposibles at night. does anyone else use real nappies (the brand) and what do they think, i am interested in hearing feedback

i havent ordered my trial pack yet but met with a rep from real nappies last week, they looked pretty good, and the price is just a tad cheaper than snazzipants' prefolds. you will be able to use ordinary old nappies inside the wrap you get from the trial pack too, just folded into a pad. i found a site (is a US mom) who has some different folds for prefolds that i thought i might try and you might find good too.

thanks for that, I will have a look. i have also found babyonline a good site as well, they have prefolds too, but i think real nappies work out a little cheaper once you factor in courier. They do have outlets though, i think they are diapers express. We got an awsome portacot from them

Most towns have a demonstrator now, and someone can come to your house (or meet somewhere) and show you all the types of cloth nappies available. http://www.thenappynetwork.org.nz/phpBB2/viewforum.php?f=10 - Here on the Nappy Network is details of all the Nappicinos that get held around the country, anyone is free to go along and have a looksie and feel the nappies. (Hopefully you can see that without having to register first). Or if you cant get to one, just ask about getting a private demo for you or a group. (I can ask if you dont want to).

now i am (almost) finished uni i figure i have the time to do laundry, so until i build up a big enough supply I am going to use a washable and disposable combo.

i'm quite excited!!!

i have now ordered and recieved one of the trial packs from snazzipants. i love the look of the fitted nappies but having to put a cover on them seems to defeat the purpose - however i am at the mo bidding for a cutie bum hemp fitted on trade me as it looks like it might be a good night nappy for my older boy. the prefolds are certainly better than the old flat nappies that i own but i would prefer covers that arent as expensive as the bummis that snazzipants and real nappies sell. in saying that i did find a really cool cover in farmers for $7 last week, even has leg gussetts.

my husband however is not happy as he thinks i am going overboard and getting obsessed and is getting grumpy about it, i got so angry at him i sd i will go back to disposables and sell what nappies i already have, he said that was sillier than my obsession...

Aimee... I've got about 3 doz cloth naps which I can use to stuff (hopefully) and about 10 stuffing thingys. I have no idea what they are made of. Cotton of sorts I think. My Mum's friend (who gave me her kushies) had bought them to use with her cloth naps. They'll do the trick I think.

oh crap... i've just realised that they are liners.
now i have to ask, what should i get to stuff them (besides flats?)
which type are most absorbent???

Posted By: angel
Date Posted: 26 October 2005 at 9:25pm
Flats are great by themselves for daytime, dry super-quick too.

You can also go for prefolds (which are on the snazzipants website) also great by themselves for daytime.

For nighttime, I suggest trying one of the above with a hemp flat under it, for starters. Then if that isnt enough, grab a booster or two (also available from snazzipants). A flat or prefold + hemp flat for night should be plenty - lasts Ella 12+ hours.

There are other inserts, like the microfibre inserts that come with fuzzibunz, but probably easiest to stick with flats and prefolds. Microfibre can "squish" like a sponge when it gets really really soggy.

I got my swaddlebees nappy in the post today and it came with a liner. I'm going to try it today! Yay!

Han's quite good over night, usually does all her peeing upon waking so doesn't sit around in a soggy nappy. also means that providing i'm not lazy and try and lie around in bed then i won't need a huge amount of stuffing as I can change her quickly.

Thanks for the help Aimee!

ok, i'm going to risk sounding like an idiot... but to stuff with a flat do you just fold it up a million times into a pad and slide it in???

Posted By: nikkitheknitter
Date Posted: 27 October 2005 at 12:28pm
Just looked on TNN and I think I've done it right.
The Swaddlebee is quite thin through the legs so was unsure if I was meant to have something as bulky as a flat in there.

Now I've gotta wash it before I can use it I wanna try it nowwww!!!!

i brought a snappi from farmers yesterday, how cool are they?   i sucked at pins, took nearly half an hour to get the pins in the nappy right but the snappi - wow - easy peasy.

nikki, did you not get the hemp thing to stuff your swaddlebee with? and to stuff with a flat did you just fold it a million times?

yep got the hemp thingy... it's so thin compared to using a flat!!!

figured out the whole flat thing. i was going to buy some more stuffer things but might go with flats for now.

still have to save money to accumulate nappies.

i might be adventurous and try something other than pockets. this whole washable nappy thing is so addictive!!!

I finally got my trial nappy from Real Nappies.
I liked it, but it was so bulky compared to the disposibles!!, it almost came down to his knees!!!
I agree with you Nikki, the washable nappy thing is addictive, it makes me feel really "motherish", although
first time he wore it, he did a ginourmous poo, and it went EVERYWHERE,and I wasn't that keen on scrubbing breastmilk poos off the nappy and cover! The only other wee "moan" was with them being bulkier, his pants seem tighter, so I hope they aren't uncomfortable for him?

ah the bliss of finally having more solid poos (altho they are a lot more stinky ) - no more explosions!

haha my friend was telling someone that i am going to start using washables and i think she said "Nikki's going to be a 'real mum' now!" haha I think her Mum was pretty old school as far as nappies go

Yep youve got it - fold the flat or hemp flat a hundred and one times into a pad shape

jacobsmama - there is a product called a Little Squirt that you can buy now... it hooks up to the pipe that fills your toilet, and its like a wee water spray gun and you hose the poo into the toilet. I dont have one but have heard lots of good things about them (espeically for runny breastfed baby poo!). Im not too sure what the nappy is that you have from Real Nappies, but if you want to see one thats really trim, try a Fuzzibunz trial nappy http://www.fuzzibunz.co.nz - Fuzzibunz site

Well, so much for no disposables on my baby!! I had such good intentions, but have decided that for the first few weeks its disposables at night while I'm still trying to sort out this whole being a mum thing! Am using cloth during the day tho (just flats with a disposable liner with a cover) but they just seem so huge on her - makes her easy to hold tho! When she is a little bigger, I have a few trial naps to try - cant wait!

Thanks for tht tip, Aimee, will look into the squirty gun thingy. I have seen the Fuzzi a few times and seen a demo, and I really love them and the idea of them, but I can't convince hubby the money's worth it. I've shown him how much we would save, but??
The real nappy dosen't look so bad today, maybe I am just used to looking at trim disposible bum. I can use my flats in the cover as well. it just stretches his clothes is the only bummer.. might get a fuzzi trial nappie anyway.

i put cloth on Jake when he was little, just a flat one and I agree Aimee, it looks huge and about to fall off!!!! My mum could do it better but I was terrible, so Jake would pee once and it would be everywhere!! An entire change. So cloth went out the window. Now as Jake's one, we are going to try again. Mum is busy sewing some trial nappies for us to try. Hopefully a wee (heheh) bit better than the flat cloth

SHAME on me I didnt know about the marvellous world of modern cloth when Ella was newborn

What I plan to use for #2 would be snappied prefolds with a pull on wool or polarfleece cover or bummis whisper pants.

Also, fitted nappies like Rosies newborn sized nappies I have heard people rave about... might be worth getting a few newborn sized fitteds?

LOL thats just stuff Ive made for Ella, I also make a lot of her clothes now (must put some photos up) but if anyone asks I will make nappies/clothes for them... my specialty is messy mats and bibs.

Aimee - if you get some prefolds, they will always come in handy in the future (infant sized as boosters when theyre bigger, and we still use regular sized ones as a daytime stuffer for pocket nappies now).

Hi everyone,
I ventured into clothies (the plain old ones) for my eldest daughter when she was about a year old. I started by using clothies at home, during the day only, and now I use them only at night time. You have to do more changes (and more washing, of course!) but it saves a heap. Also because she has sensitive skin, I could use either clothies or Huggies, not anything in the cheap disposable range.

I also have a 3 month old who is in disposables all the time. I'm going to wait until she has started solids before I bother starting her. Hopefully by then her wets will be further apart and she won't need changing every hour, like if I did disposables now.

Hope that helps. It's always nice to have a few extra disposables for the odd "lazy day", especially when starting out.

Busymum - with the staydry microfleece or microsuede liners, and the new, more absorbant, fabrics available (hemp, microfibre, etc) you definately dont need to change every hour! We change as often as you would a disposable, maybe 4-5 changes a day. Sometimes its less than that now, as Ella is getting older she is holding on and letting go in one big pee, so she isnt in a damp nappy.

Ha! After a bidding war, i won my first Trade Me aution today, a Nix Nap cover. Looking forward to getting it and trying it out. Who else has used these and what did you think? It says its a cover for disposible, but I will give it a try with my pre folds? Its a very funky green dinosaur, i really wanted it, becasue Jacobs fave toy is a funky green lamaze dinosaur!

Gutted! I just went onto the webiste that G's Mum posted up a few posts back, and saw I could buy them off there for $16! Still. The thrill of actually winning something, after bidding furiously for days on fuzzis, bummis and nix is all good!

I think its just a cover, like a bummis or whatever, I looked on the site. I got another new one for $13, so all in all, I got 2 nix naps for cheaper than buying 2 off website, so thats not so bad after all!

If I remember rightly, they arent as thick as the regular NixNap covers. I havent seen one though, so dont quote me on that. We've got a couple of nixnaps but dont use them much, prefer other stuff!!!

Just trying out new stuff, I have a bummis cover that I really love, from Real Nappies. I thought these would be cool as little shorts, I can use them over his disposibles as well, if I am using them. Still keen to get some fuzzibuns.. Damn, this nappy thing is addictive!

I got mine from a lady on TradeMe, her username is amy98.

I chose colours that she already had as I'm too impatient to wait for her to order them in, so got butter, turquoise, green and orange.

I really want hot pink and lavender but there is plenty of time for that

Hannah is having her first disposable-free day!!!
Going very well so far.
Have 2 'Stuffable' nappies in leopard print hehe very cute but they leaked this morning. Swaddlebee nappy also leaked but I guess that's what you get sometimes.
Fuzzibunz have not leaked yet. Great nappies!!!
Just bought a hot pink one from trademe. It's second hand but apparently only been used for a few months. We'll see.
I'm very happy to be rid of disposables. I don't like the dirty ones sitting around until rubbish day. I am loving that I can just chuck the cloth naps straight in the wash! (or atleast only have them lying around until the end of the day)
Will update on fuzzis to see how leak-proof they are

yay for hannah... nikki you will find the swaddlebees do leak - they dont hold as much as the fuzzis, i found they hold more when i added a fuzzi doubler to it.

toby is now on the http://www.snazzipants.co.nz/ - snazzipants site in the snazzibabies section showing off his sample fitted nappy.

Very cute. Thanks for that Deb
Yeah, I was meaning to ask, are the nappies leaking because of the cut or should I be stuffing them with something more?
What should I be using at night?

thanks guys, i think hes pretty cute too.

nikki the swaddlebee website says not to be used for heavy wetters so i wouldnt use them overnight, i use them as an interim nappy mainly.
for overnight maybe two inserts in your fuzzi and/or a doubler too. would depend on if you are changing during the night and how much they wet etc.

i will be getting my rosies all in one next week and i cant wait to try that.

right - i have been reading all the info you ladies have been sharing and also checked out TM and some of the sites but i am confused. I had the boys in Weenies last year/start of this year that my friend has loaned me and just put normal folded nappies and liners in them. This was ok for the day but one of my boys is the hugest pee machine so have to have him in a huggies at night. Anyway am keen to get back into cloth again even tho will prob be for only 1 more year but i so dont know where to start. Do these nappy covers not use the good old cloth now? And how many do you think you need for each child? Any advice would be absolutley fantastic

I use my old styles flat ones, folded in these new covers, with liners. I like the bummis covers, nice and waterproof, alhtough haven't done it for overnight yet. I'm sure someone told me today that snazzipants are good for big wetters (Jake is a BIG wetter as well) but not too sure. I think they use bummis covers as well, but maybe they have an all in one? G's mum will know!

Joey is a pee machine too! I need (in my fuzzi) a liner and a doubler during the day so I am too scared to try at night as I really can't be bothered changing everything at 2am although my fuzzis agent assures me he will stay dry and I should really try it I am not so sure hmmmmmm I will stick to Huggies I think (at night) they are the only ones he doesn't wet right through.

I have ordered an economy pack which is 8 fuzzis plus I have the trial one and that will do me during the day I am sure. I do a load of washing every night anyway so I am not too worried about extra washing.

k & j's mum - sounds like weenies are just a cover as are bummis and you can put old style nappies in them or prefolds, but they prob wouldnt be the best for overnight.
fuzzi bunz are a pocket nappy and they can be stuffed with as much or as little as is needed so are good for overnight, and you can use your older nappies for those too. the http://www.snazzipants.co.nz/chart.html - snazzipants site has a comparison chart which i found quite helpful.

also if you want to read how other mums have got on with diff sorts of nappies http://www.thenappynetwork.org.nz/phpBB2/index.php - the nappy network forum has reviews on all sorts of nappys and accessories. i found this really helpful too.

gsmum - very cute! Ella is still up there, not the first one at 10 weeks (thats a different Ella) but the second one, at 10 months, asleep in the yellow beanbag.

Nikki - what are you stuffing your pockets with? Might need just a little more oomph in them - put in a doubler and see how you get on. Or, if the inserts arent completely wet when they leak, you might need to strip the fleece liner. They can get a buildup of a number of things and stop wicking effectively. If you use creams on Hannah's bottom they will rub on the fleece and gunk it up. Sometimes not being rinsed well enough after washing can cause it too.

For nighttime, put a hemp flat under whatever you would use during the day, and and extra doubler and see how you get on. Hemp is more absorbant than cotton or microfibre, and holds the moisture better, so its ideal for nighttime. Best to have something quick-absorbing like cotton or microfibre closest to bubs skin as the hemp may not suck all the wee in quick enough if they let alot go at once.

K&J's mum, alot of the nappies available now are either covers, which you can still use with the flannel flats, or pockets, which you can stuff with flannel flats. I use flannel flats everyday, inside pocket nappies. Theyre great because they dry so fast - a bonus down south here. Pocket nappies like fuzzibunz are good for over night because you can stuff them with heaps. Like I said above, add in hemp at night. You can get hemp flats from snazzipants. If you get some - dont be alarmed at the size of them!! They are smaller than a flannel flat, but thats because they dont need to be as big as a flannel flat to be more absorbant!

Right, I think we've got the leaking thing sorted.
I realised that the nappies that were leaking were the ones that I only stuffed with a flannel flat so I have just been sticking with the microfibre inserts that came with my fuzzibunz (apparently absorb as much as the inserts that come from the NZ fuzzibunz dealer + a doubler) so they have been great.
Over night I figured if I add a flat to the fuzzibunz soaker then she doesn't leak either!
So yay!!! Figured it out (for now) and have ordered some more inserts from the fuzzibunz lady in CHCH.

Have been getting heaps of comments from people when out and about (like at creche xmas do) so I'm quite proud of myself being a cloth nappy mum now (geeky I know!)

Oh, and have also used the swaddlebee nappy a couple of times again and it hasn't leaked so I think maybe the leaking was overflow from the situation which Aimee described in that the hemp couldn't absorb as fast as Hannah was peeing. So anyway, is a nice trim nappy to use when I am in between washes
