This is probably a bit silly...

DS has been a pretty good sleeper, and from 4 months has gone to sleep in a cot in his sleeping bag with a toy that he chews on, sucks and cuddles. I would quite happily keep him in his cot till 3 or even longer - we have a second cot for DD - but he has fallen out of it once as he is quite tall for his age and overbalances when he leans out.

He normally walks around his cot and chats before falling asleep and I am worried that when we take the sides off the cot he'll just get out and not settle, especially with day sleeps. He really needs the day sleep and is nowhere ready to give it up. Also, he hates pillows and blankets - throws them out when I've tried to introduce them and gets really upset, but I don't think he'll be safer in a sleeping bag in bed.

So what are you doing about your toddler's bedding and how do you make sure they stay in the bed and settle well?

Hi!
I worried about all of those things too. We needed the cot for Will so had no choice really. We talked all week about him going into a big boy bed and then he helped DH set it up. We kept him in his sleeping bag and gave him a duvet and pillow aswell. He started using the pillow straight away but didn't want the duvet on. However within a couple of weeks he was asking for the duvet on. Once he was consistently waking in the morning still under the duvet we just didn't put the sleeping bag on one night and he never asked for it again. We put pillows on the floor and he fell out a few times but we put him back into bed and he was fine. Some nights he just stayed on the floor lol. His two cuddly toys he had in the cot just tuck into bed with him now.

As for getting out of the bed either at bedtime or during the night, this was my biggest fear. Well he has never gotten out of bed. He even asks if he can 'get down' in the morning.

He actually settles to sleep much easier in the bed and generally there are no tears. I look at him now in his bed and can't imagine him in a cot.

With regards to day sleeps, that was a battle l couldn't face with a baby aswell. Ollie still has a day sleep but generally on the sofa now. He was really resisting it before we put him in a bed and l didn't have the energy to force that one.

Fancy another catch up soon?

I've never had much of an issue with DD getting out of bed at night (she's been in a bed since 17 months) but on the odd occasion when she has got out I've just put her straight back in to bed, tucked her in and said goodnight again. She just lays down and goes back to sleep. And she's only recently discovered that she can get out of bed by herself in the morning (though she does get up in the middle of the night and come in and see me occasionally).

I just put the bed in her room and let her sleep on it for day sleeps then took the cot down and told her she would be sleeping in it at night. I brought her a duvee cover and sheets with fairies on them and told her she was a big girl for sleeping in a bed so she could have a new big girl duvee cover and sheets.

Regarding the covers/blankets, DD wears a sleepsuit over her PJs coz she thrashes around so much she doesn't keep the blankets on. Its cotton lined and polarfleece on the outside. You can get merino ones too but they were a bit out of my price range. She sleeps with a sheet and duvee but she is toasty inside her suit.
