my boy has a fan obsession

anyone else experienced anything like this? He is almost 3 and LOVES fans. Not kidding. He calls Mitre10 Mega, the fan shop. If we goes to someone's house and they have a fan, he wants to turn it on and play with it. He seems to be fascinated with turning it on and off and how it works.   He even tries to check out ppls cars as they have fans at the front grill! Dangerous I know! And points out everyones air conditioning fans outside their houses or on buildings during our walks.
His favourite toy when a baby was his Jungle Rounds game which spins around balls. He would experiment with it trying to balance differenty toys on the centre piece.
He seems quite interested in how things work though. He will try to pull apart some of his toys to see how they work. When I pulled apart his jungle rounds game to fix it he was fascinated.
He seems quite normal to me, and developmentally is completely normal. I mean, he can count to 13 and recognise numbers (tells me what numbers are on letter boxes and tells me the number of aisle we are in in the supermarket lol), just that I don't know anyone else's kid like that.   He plays cars and trucks and playdough etc just like other kids but see a fan, and he'll drop what he's doing and spend 15mins turning it off and on and making it oscillate and stop. He even says "its oscillating Mum!" Oscillate! He's not quite 3! lol Is this behaviour unusual? His younger brother is not so obsessed but Monkey see monkey do .....he will go and get involved if big bro is.

how cute, certainly beats the shoe obsession that toby has!

My nephew got obsessed with snooker, he would watch it, he knew it was on channel 2 and what time it was on. He knew all the players names (world championship). He knew how much each ball was worth and which order they had to be potted in. He had his own little table and would set the balls up perfectly and he knew if you hit something you weren't suppose to. He was about 2 ish when the obsession starts and now at 7 he has own bigger table and is inrolled in a childrens snooker lesson programme so he can play on full size tables.

When the olypmics was on last he was 3.5 yrs and he learnt ALL of the flags, my SIL had to look up who some of the countries were so she could tell him but once he had been told he knew them all. He also use to have a thing for numbers and when I took him to the supermarket he would shout out numbers that he saw. He would tell me that I lived at 84, that mummy and daddy lived at 24 and that nanny and granddad had no number (their house has a name but no number). He couldnt' count to 84 but because it was on my door he knew it.

Apart from doing those things he is completely normal in every other way. Sounds to me like your boy is just totally fascinated by how the fans work.

That is so cute and kind of uncanny too. I had a friend over today who's 2 yo is obsessed with fans and always points them out in the shops etc. He say J-ville (a shopping area in Wellington) is where the fans live.

We have a ceiling fan which he was fascinated by and he also loves playing with a wheels on toy cars etc.

Joshua has a thing about cars. Toyota's in particular. Can point them out at 100km an hour on the Southern Motorway lol! Anything in the transportation area actually - diggers, trucks, trains etc. And he loves wheels! Talks about them all the time.

I wouldn't fret too much about your boy emily. Fixations on unusual things can sometimes be a indication that there may be some form of autism going on, but those fixations don't tend to disappear or change as your sons has.
