    Posted: 20 June 2010 at 8:24pm
Last time I asked on here about recommendations for midwifes - I got pointed in the direction of Prue Thompson in Dunedin who was fantastic. Thanks so much to the ladies who recommended her. I would call her straight away except for the fact that we have moved to the other end of the country.....

So, I thought I'd try my luck on here again. Does anyone know of any awesome midwifes in the Whakatane area?

TIA

Sue Finch -
I had 3 diff midwifes as my first one left to become the head of the maternity ward when I was 32 weeks preg- then I had Bernie Sharp who was her partner, but only saw her a couple of times as she went on leave, so I had Sue Finch for a few of my appts in last few weeks. Bernie delivered Isla, but the labour was so long, that about an hr after she was born, Sue came back to take over.
Amber - BaAsKa on here has had Sue Finch 3 times and highly recommends her too!

Hi Delli
I'm in Whakatane too.
Twink was very highly recommended to me by several people (including my GP), almost chose her as my MW, and she was my backup MW until she decided to go on holiday in September!
My MW though is Kim Mullooly, and I think she's great (obviously). I also visited Jodie James - not for me.
My backup is now going to be Michelle Goodhew, who also comes pretty highly recommended.
Michelle, Kim and Twink are all based at the midwife centre in Russell St.

I know of a couple out Opotiki way that are recommended to, but if you are in Whakatane you probably want one based here?

Let me know if you want more info about Kim and the others I've met.

Lisa

Thanks Lisa - good to know that Twink was highly recommended to you as I have set up a meeting with her next Thurs. We are out Matata/Edgecumbe way, so this means we don't have to go into Whakatane all the time to meet her as she does clinics in Edgecumbe. Awesome. Thanks!

Great. She is probably the MW I hear most about; I'm sure she'll be brilliant.
I saw after I posted that you are in Matata so Opot would be no use to you at all.

Twink was my MW for my son and I've got her again this time - I think she's fantastic!! And as an added bonus, her back-up is Sue Finch (who I met last week and is lovely too).

I find that she's really down to earth and easy to talk to. Plus, out of the 12 women in my ante-natal class last time round, only two of us didn't have emergency c-sections, and we were both with Twink... maybe a coincidence... maybe not!

g_n - must email you! I've been away.

Actually now you mention it, I think it might be Sue who's going to be my back up not Michelle. Must write that down next time I see Kim.

You musn't have long to go!

Lois Magerison is an awesome midwife and is highly recommended by a lot of people, shoe does do Whakatane area as I live in Whakatane and have had the pleasure of having Lois as my midwife. Ive recently given birth to a beautiful baby girl who is just over a week old, and Lois was also my midwife with my second pregnancy which was only last year. Hope this helps :) ..... I had Jane Curely with my first pregnancy and she was there at my Twins c-section as Lois was on holiday but believe me she is useless, i wouldnt recommend her if she was the last midwife on earth

Hi there,
I'm in Edgecumbe too! I'm pregnant with my 2nd bub. My MW is Jodie James, I had her for my 1st & I had a really positive birth experience with her, I trust her with my life. I was after a natural home birth with low intervention & she shared a similar philosophy as me, which was very important. Jodie comes to my home for all our visits & has a great relaxed & straightforward approach, highly recommend her :-)

Hi I live in Thornton & have had Jodie James as my midwife for my 3rd baby & now my 4th.
I think Jodie is a fantastic midwife, very down to earth, straightforward, honest woman & ALWAYS available day or night!! She is sooo easy 2 get on with & respects & supports your opinion in all aspects & goes out of her way to make sure tha whole pregnancy & birth are all about you & making sure you are happy, healthy & comfortable.
I found her through a friend & now highly recommend her to every1 i know!!
Im so very sad that i am now moving 2 patetonga & have to leave Jodie before the baby is born , but Jodie as helped ease me into moving & trying her best 2 remove any fears or concerns that iv had about it. She has been working hard & ringing around for midwifes & birthing places for me also....Awesome awesome woman!!

Suppose I had better update with my experience as well, in case other Whakatane women are looking for midwives . I went with Twink Drayton and she was so absolutely wonderful - I can't recommend her enough. She was so lovely and onto it. If we have another - I will definitely be going with Twink again.

How bizarre to find a thread on here about our little community! We had Jodie James as our MW and will be having her again with our next one. I would absolutely recommend her to anyone, she is so respectful of your wishes as a family and her pre-birth information evening is AMAZING! My husband really appreciated Jodie's straight up attitude and I loved how she put me at ease.

I live in Edgecumbe and had all my visits at our house, which was a huge bonus for us. My sister in law was due 3 weeks after me and we got to have lots of our visits together, it was so fun!I absolutely love Jodie and recommend her to anyone I know having a baby
