Hi,

I have hypermobility syndrome and have read on many sites (including an official HMS support website) about the link between HMS and premature birth/rapid labor. I was wondering whether anyone else has any knowledge or experience on this subject as it seems the Obstetrician I first saw had no idea!

hi i am Hypermobile too, (dont know about the syndrome bit, was just diagnosed by my physio as hypermobile..) was never told anything about this, they were more worried about my back, pelvis etc with the weight of pregnancy (and they were right, DD is 10 months old and ive only just stopped physio for my pelvis and lower back, but it still niggles and probably always will according to my physio.) BUT i had a perfect labour, not an issue (other than back pain/sciatica from the hypermobility but nothing dangerous to the baby etc) and DD still came at 13 days overdue lol and my labour was 9 hours active labour, 24hours all up so pretty standard for a first time birth, slightly quicker than average but definitely not rapid by any means! so no issues with any of that for me. my main thing is the pain now, if i were you id probably get your MW to hook you up with a physio as soon as you have any niggles in your back.joints etc due to your condition so they can keep an eye on it..we are deciding to wait a couple of years before TTC #2 so i can get my back and pelvis back into shape to avoid being on crutches for the next pregnancy.. id assume if your obstetrician and midwife havent heard of it, then it must not be a very common issue, or its just good old online information playing with your head lol (totally been there!) good luck for a great pregnancy and birth ahead! x

Yep, I've talked on the March thread. I have hypermobility and I was also worried about premature labour but ended up going 6 days overdue. I do think I was dialated for at least a week prior to that but never had an internal so can't tell you for sure. I had a quick labour, had no symptoms until waters broke and then DS was here under 4 hours.

I found that I had issues with my wrists holding a little newborn afterwards and ended up wearing wrist braces on both sides just to counteract the natural inclination to wrap my wrist right round the baby to hold him. I think that will make sense to someone who also has hypermobility

Hmmm, just read up on hypermobility syndrome and from what I read I'm pretty sure I have it too as my knees bend quite significantly backwars sometimes if that makes sense ( unless there are other conditions that cause this). Have also had wrist trouble for a couple of years and got braces and physio which didn't help at all.

I guess we'll find out about the labour part reff...

Could be Julia. Lots of people have it, it's just a matter of degrees as to how bad it is. The quick birth was awesome so I can't complain there!

Mollycat, your wrist trouble could be De Quervains disease, which is what I have. It usually only appears in pregnant women and new mothers. have a google and a read about it and see if that describes it. That's what I have in my wrists as well as ganglions. The cortisone injection didn't make it any better unfortunately and it's just all about managing it from here. I can feel it getting worse again recently too...

I do understand the whole wrist thing Mollycat. My left wrist is inclined to be the weaker and sometimes gets an almighty pain when riding a bike over rough ground or something. Since getting pregnant it flares up so much more often...so that's definitely something for me to watch out for.

Julia - I think you can have hypermobile joints without being generally hypermobile...and also, yes, the severity varies. A rheumatologist who was examining me for various issues, was prodding my hands and thumb etc, and exclaimed "Wow, even your skin is really stretchy!" lol

My MW seems to think this could be the time of my life when HMS finally pays off (hoping for that quick labor!) - I sure hope so, as it's caused a heck of a lot of problems so far.

Thanks for that Julia but my wrists have a tendency to be floppy anyway, they just got worse with all the newborn cuddles

I am so sure you know this Ref but you are also prone to stretch marks with your floppy skin as it affects your collagen. I knew this so it didn't bother me when I started to get more of them with my pregnancy.

And, I reckon anything under 2 hours would be traumatic so I hope you don't have that happen. My advice though (if you are going to hospital) is to head there the moment you think you are in actual labour cause mine was all go after about 15 minutes. If they look at you funny, tell them you have underlying medical issues.

Or stay at home reff

I'm prone to stretch marks too. Have got them from growthspurts during puberty and from a weightgain a few years back. No doubt I'll get heaps with this pregnancy...oh well, nothing i can do about it, so whyh moan :-)

Julia - you probably won't get heaps. I gained 20kgs and I didn't get heaps of them. What happened was all my existing ones got longer...and then I got a few in between, more so on my left side as that is where DS's back and big butt were poking out LOL.

But, it would also depend on how much you've gained and lost in the past I imagine. I used to be quite a bit heavier so my skin wasn't necessarily stretching beyond where it had already gone before (and by that I more mean boobs, thighs, etc).

oh ok, so when I porked out 8 years ago and put on 20kg in 6 months that should've already stretched my skin as if I was pregnant, lol...I guess we'll see afterwards...

I have stretch marks on my breasts already - but it happened a while ago. I'm quite small framed naturally and so were they, they grew pretty quickly and I think it was that that made the marks appear so fast.

I thought perhaps you'd be less prone to stretch marks as your collagen is happy stretching anyway! (like being told my skin was stretchy) Time will tell I guess.

So far my main problems are my back and left wrist. Definitely thinking of buying some wrist supports sooner rather than later - thanks for that bit of info Mollycat!

They will have a huge range of braces at the handclinic Reff (the one on papanui road), I used to go there and they gave them to me for free (mind you it was covered by ACC, so they may have covered the cost of the wrist braces) still have heaps lying around at home and may start up on one of the elastic bandages soon.

I would've thought so too regarding the stretchy skin being good to prevent stretchmarks...ah well

Apparently it has to do with the fragility of your skin. Just as you can be prone to injury cause your joints are so mobile your skin is more fragile because of the way the collagen acts (not necessarily because it is stretchier). I would say if you have already had stretch marks then you might be prone to get more. But Ce la vie - not the end of the world.

I would definitely recommend a wrist brace - not just for newborn but once you start sitting them on your hip the natural inclination for me is to really twist my wrist around to get a good hold and I've had to break them out once or twice.

nup i think stretchmarks are stretchmarks, most get them, a few lucky ones dont.. i had them BAD on my belly- (despite using bio oil every single day)to the point my OBGYN commented on how bad they were! (come on- she sees preggy bellys every single day for a living, so they MUST have been bad for her to feel the need to tell me how bad they were! lol) but now DD is 11 months old almost, and they have already faded right down and shrunk to just small ones, so am pretty impressed i thought it would have taken years! oh well, no bikinis for me, but thats no big loss lol.
