Topic: How to involve my dad? Posted: 02 July 2011 at 5:08pm |
My mother passed away a couple of years ago and I'm feeling that I've missed out on her support and advice. My dad is awesome and I'm really close to him and I want to be involved in my pregnancy but I'm not sure how.
Any ideas?

My Dad got quite excited cos it was his job to find a going home outfit for baby :) So he got to pick a girl outfit and a boy outfit cos we had a surprise. He was sooo excited to do that- sound dumb but he was stoked :)
Also when I done a few things like went and picked up the pram I took him to be the man to carry the box to the car etc Even though I would have been fine to do it he was excited to be involved like I "needed" him. I also couldn't figure out how to get the wheels on so he got to do that And I think he helped DH put the cot up...

Maybe you could ask him if he would like to come along to one of your scans?

Yeah, my mum passed 2yrs ago, so with this PG I missed talking to her about her pregnancies etc, and I did ask Dad, but it was a long time ago and he wasn't sure on most things, but I brought him along to my 12wk scan, he had never seen one, and he loves spoiling me when I visit, more noticeable this last time, cooked most of the meals, stuff that mum used to make, took us out for lunches etc and never let me lift anything or get DD out of the car once. So Rarrarrar is right, they do like to contribute and it doesn't have to be anything complicated.
Will even take him shopping with me for some newborn clothes, great idea!

Even though my dad wasn't interested in "baby shopping" (hes not very good at shopping) he was quite stoked to have something special choosing/buying babys going home outfit.
My parents actually ended up in the birthing suite after DS was born (I think I was just getting up to have a shower so was a wee bit after the birth)but that quite excited Dad- he was one of the first to "meet" DS. I think he finds that quite special cos he got to have a cuddle there and then by the time we walked round too room on the ward my ILs were there then not long after SIL was there, so things got a bit hectic!

my mum is hugely involved in my pregnancy (she comes to all my appts/scans) - think Dad was feeling a little left out (we are really close) - so at the moment I involve him by sending him weekly emails saying what baby is up to (just copy bits out of the emails you get from some sites saying how big baby is and what is developing that week), I also ask his advice (even when I don't need it) on bloke type stuff - like moving furniture and putting things together
he did come along to the 13wk scan (he had never been to one), think it freaked him out, so he hasn't been interested in coming to the others but he loves looking at the pictures with me afterwards
oh and he loves to come up with names - every couple of weeks mum and dad send me a list A to Z of names (one for each letter of the alphabet) most of the names come from dad - some of them are joke names however it makes them feel part of things by contributing!

I got my dad to paint the secondhand drawers we got for baby's room ... DH could have done it but we thought it was a good way to get dad involved (I am a daddys girl still!). We also asked him to check all the bolts etc on cot and change table and to make sure he thought the room was safe for baby. He loved it and took the job very seriously, was good for us to have a second pair of eyes check it over too

That's so nice that your dad was protecting your baby by checking the room was safe etc. I think my dad could really get into that too.
