I don't think Waikato is too bad as far as hospitals go, but I'd definitely try to transfer to a birthing centre. I had Jacob in RiverRidge, and the staff were amazing. I was there on my birthday (Jacob was born the day before), and they even gave me a bunch of flowers. Plus the food is awesome. Whereas I think the hospital has the usual hospital cons - hubbys can't stay, you might have to share a room, the staff seem busier.

Jack was born at about 7pm on Tues night and I stayed at Waitakere till Friday morning. It wasn't the best stay as the lady in my room (2 of us in a 3 bed room) had visitors and call at all hours of the night. But I have to say that I would have prefered that over being at home. I was nervous with my first and felt safer at the hospital.

Ben was born at 2.30am and would have stayed a night at Waitakere then 2 at Helensville but Waitakere had no beds available so I went up to Helensville at lunchtime. Helensville was lovely and it was a great chance to rest.

This baby is planned for a Birthcare Parnell birth and a stay as long as I can!! I see it as my only chance to get a good rest before DH, the boys and the housework call!

Hi Kelzie Rose, I had my DD at North shore hosp almost 5 months ago(and have also been lurking in a few of your threads and am soooo happy to see your new ticker - not a creepy stalker or anything!) and I loved my hospital stay.

The actual facilities and midwives etc were fine, but for me it was more about having those 3 days and nights where nothing exists outside of you and your new little family - you don't worry about things like bills, meals, telemarketers, knocks at the door etc etc - I think it is a blessed time that I will cherish forever . I can't begin to understand the negative associations you have with hospitals, but I would suggest that you do the tour of the birthing and maternity suites (we did ours as part of the antenatal classes held by the hopsital, but I belive you can do the tour separately)- as hopefully you could then see that particular part of the hospital as a (largely) joyous, miraculous and life affirming place that I for one felt privileged to be part of

So sorry to hear of your angel babies and dislike for hospital. I have never had a miscarriage so have no idea what it would be like to go thru

I have had a few operations BUT being in the maternity ward/birthing suites with a wee babe in your arms is an amazing experience. I had a complicated vb birth and enjoyed every minute of my 5 day stay with my first born. MW were great but in TImaru we have the joy of our own room with a shared ensuite. the thought of going home with a baby I had no idea how to bf was far to scary to me and 2nd daily visits with MW just not enuf. I didnt want to leave until I had bf sorted.

But everyone is different one of my friends went home 3hr after birth and a few have had homebirths, but for me I enjoy the stay in hospital and help from midwives and visits from friends etc

You will find what works for you when the time comes play it by ear I say.

I was terrified of going to hospital to have S!! Ended up having an emergency c/s and still only stayed 1 and a half nights (she was born close to midnight).. In the end it wasnt the fact I was scared to be in hospital (way too much else going on to worry about that! ) But I just wanted to go home to bond with S and was sick of a nurse coming in every 2 hours to take our temperatures!! :)

Hi Kelzie Rose, congratulations on your pregnancy, that's very exciting news!

I'm also based on the North Shore and I had booked into Birthcare Parnell for DS birth, but due to some minor complications, was transferred to Auckland Hospital.  After many more hours of labour I ended up having an emerg c-sec.  I was planning on spending the entire 5 nights at the hospital as I had my own private room, but after one night I quickly changed my mind and relocated back to Birthcare.  It was pure bliss and I had 4 nights there in a private room for free, because I had started labouring there.  Are you keen to try birthing at Birthcare Parnell?  The staff are extrememly helpful and the hospital is only 5 mins away.  That way you could hopefully avoid a hospital birth and relax after the birth in a really nice environment.  My mw use to work at BC once a week for antenatal visits, so I felt familiar with the place anyway.
