I know that cleanliness is the most important thing there if you don't want to get lice. Coconut, tea tree oil, lavender, eucalyptus, rosemary, lemon grass, and peppermint are scents popularly believed to repel lice. You can buy some shampoo with these ingredients.

Yes, I agree with previous answer. There are special rules which you should explain to your children and if they will follow them, there will be little chance of picking up lice. Also I recommend to read articles about how long will my head itch after lice are gone, signs of head lice, head lice treatment and so on.
