I've also had both, its a bit weird having the internal but as others have said, its much clearer.

Congrats! I am so happy for you 
When I conceived straight after Abigail without having a period I went for a dating scan. They tried the tummy scan first and couldn't see enough so did an internal which put me at 5 weeks 5 days. So I think it will really depend on how far along you are, they will probably try the external first and if they can't see enough will do an internal.

Looks like we're about 7 weeks, due 9 May. But its strange because I had an internal scan with DS at just over 8 weeks and this one today was gel on my tummy, yet I could see more this time  Weird. But yay!!!
