Hi All

fairly new here and really enjoying all the great posts sure helps heaps.

First time pregnancy this far along...
just wanted to hear others stories about dates and meausurements.

Orginally i was due 31st December, didn't have early dating scans due to previous pregnancy not seeing heart beat at 12 weeks... So didn't go for first scan till 20 weeks... Was told i was 3 weeks behind and had to come back for another 3 weeks later went back told the same thing and come back for another to check heart... Went back and was told that i was now 2 weeks behind my orginal dates and now due on the 13th Jan..

Now sitting at over 32 weeks and when i went and saw midwife my measurements are at 38 weeks i have grown 5 cm in two weeks.. So guess what another scan is needed for dates.. And to check size and liquid etc

Has this happened to anyone else and what was the outcome if you don't mind me asking...

Thanks all

Congrats and welcome!

Estimating dates from scans gets more unreliable the further along are you - so a 'dating' scan at approx 7 weeks is the most accurate.

I dated almost a week behind my LMP at my 7 week scan (which corresponded with what I knew of my long cycles), and then I was slightly ahead at the 12 week, and about 2-3 weeks ahead at my 20 week scan!

This baby is definitely measuring on the large side (as was my DD) - but in those scans, having a larger baby translates as being further along (as they are simply based on a set of population data).

Maybe your baby has just undergone a growth spurt, or changed position in your uterus, so you're measuring ahead? I wouldn't stress too much - there is a large degree of inaccuracy with the scan estimates!

Obviously another scan may offer some peace of mind in terms of size and fluid, but I don't know that they would change your EDD based on a late scan alone? I guess you may just have to be prepared that you may not end up with a specific EDD - it may be a range - and something you might need to discuss with your MW so that you have an agreed date to fall back on, should you go "over" and need to talk about induction etc?

(i.e. you probably wouldn't want to risk induction at an estimated 42 weeks, if you really were only 40 weeks, and your body just hadn't done it's thing yet...)

Good luck anyway, it sounds like baby will be here sometime in Jan (come and visit us in the Jan thread!)

Yep, scans after the 1st trimester are often off on the dates.
If you know your OV date, that will give you the closest EDD.
By 20 wks my DS's long legs had developed which skewed the dates.
I've never really understood how the MWs can tell the due date by measuring on the outside. I'm quite large so I wonder how can they figure out where the baby stops and my blubber starts.

They can feel the top of the uterus and that's what they measure!

I always measured within a week or 2 out of my dates and DD arrived a week early but was only 6lbs 13 oz (mw didn't think she'd be bigger than 7lbs) and dp and I were small babies too. She had the downy hair too but we know she was fully cooked and dates were accurate (from scan), I know exactly LMP and date she was conceived.

I had a scan at 32 weeks due to measuring behind and DD was just under the 50%ile for her size but they never changed my dates. I was measuring 1 week behind too with the measuring tape method. An had been measuring behind since about 23 weeks.

Hi All

thanks for your feedback and comments... Being first time it is always good to hear others comments or what has happened in same or simlar situations.

Spent most of yest up at hospit as woke up night before with huge pain under right ribs. They think it is either liver or kidney.
Also have small amount of protein in urine so starting of PET but my blood pressure has gone down which is good.
Going back to hosp today to see someone else.

had scan done yest and all is well with baby 4.5 pounds which is about avg for 33 weeks i was told so that is all good!
just me that's not but i don't mind that... 1 week of work left thank goodness!

Thanks all again :)
