Topic: Bad Teeth! Posted: 28 November 2010 at 7:53pm |
I have really inflammed gums and have been flossing and brushing regularly. While on my post dinner teeth care break, i noticed the bottom gum along my front bottom teeth is receeding and the gum is really loose, like its not attatched to the teeth at all - i can move it around and peel it back with a finger!! It doesnt hurt at all, but i noticed that one of the teeth is slightly (ok, a lot) brown at the base under where it would be covered by a gum normally. It doesnt hurt at all.
Now i'm freaking out my tooth is going to fall out!
I have heard gum disease is frequent/common in pregnancy....but this seems a bit extreme!
I had really good teeth/dental health previous to being pregnant, i don't even have any fillings! This is a rapid deterioration of my teeths!
To make things worse i can't see a dentist as i have a heart murmer and have to have drugs prior to even getting a cleaning and this is (apparently) impossible while i'm pregnant and probably while i'm breastfeeding as well though i will double check that with my midwife when i see her this week.
Generally looking for reassurance that i am not going to need dentures at the age of 23, and maybe advice on how to keep my teeth in tip top order? Or anyone who wants to reassure me that teeth issues are totally normal part of pregnancy and my teeth will be as usual soon!

Hi there,
I too shared this freaky time when I was pregnant at 21. I had vomited alot during the first 3 months and by the time it started to slow I noticed my gums were bleeding when i brushed my teeth. Weeks later I was eating an apple and something pulled the bottom gum away from the teeth and I had a mouth full of blood and what seemed to be the gum totally coming away from the teeth. I could lift it away with my fingernails. I went to the dentist and she said I had a bad case of gingivitus which totally freacked me out as upto that stage I had only had one filling and flossed regularily. Aghhh!! So she recomened regular hygenist cleanings. I see that you are unable to do this so the only thing I can recommend is floss regularily, buy interdental brushes (found at all dentists and chemist) in a small size to get in between teeth and get out all bits of food and rinse 3 times a day with savacol mouthwash. Hope that helps!!

I guessed it was gingivitis (thanks Dr Google!). Thanks for reassuring me, as i was seriously worrying that my teeth were going to come out! When i see my midwife i'll see what she says about the drugs because i could probably use a damn good clean!!
The brown patch on one is worrying me a little bit, IF it is rotting will they take the tooth out? Or can they cut out the rotton bit? What does a rotton tooth look like anyway?

Im not to sure, it may not be rotton it could just be a build up of plaque. I brought a electric toothbrush which was abit expensive but took away any worrying discolouration. Im sure they can take away rotten bits of teeth if its not too much. I think from talks with other ppl a rotten tooth will be quite grey in colour.
After my pregnancy my teeth are now white, clean and more importantly the gums are healthy. If u keep up a strick regime u should be fine!!

Oh and also a good dose of vitamin C daily as this renews the gum tissue. Check with your midwife as to how much she recomends!

Just another perspective...
I work for a Dentist and have done for 6+ years.
I would strongly reccomend you see your Dentist for a good Check up & Clean. There is no reason why anyone couldnt see a Dentist during pregnancy, its reccomended that the best time is during your 2nd Trimester, however we have seen plenty of mums right up until they were ready to pop! With regards to the Heart Murmur, Dentists reccomend patients have Antibiotics prior to their Dental appointment, you can discuss with a Dr or your MW which antibiotic would be suitable and the safest option for taking while pregnant. The dose is usually just a one off prior to your appointment.
If in doubt call your Dentist. A good practice will have a very knowledgeable person on the other end of the phone that would be more than happy to discuss your needs and concerns with your Dentist for you.
At no time is inflammed gums or lose teeth a good thing, especially as it can be a sign of infection which during pregnancy is best to be avoided. Your body is having a hard enough time growing that orecious bub of your without having to fight off a nasty oral infection too. While a good home care regieme is the best start not every issue can be fixed with an electric toothbrush and an antibacterial mouthwash. In my opinion see you Dentist, have your teeth really well cleaned by either the Dentist or a Hygienist, throw out your old brush as its full of bacteria and start fresh with a nice clean and healthy mouth.
And hey, the stress of worrying about it is enough of a worry!

Thanks I have rung my dentist to find out what antibiotic i'll have to take - i'm allergic to amoxil - so ic an run that past my midwife then i'll be in there for a clean ASAP. I like my teeth where they are and will be taking good care of them. Besides best go before bubs comes, be a bit hard to balance a newborn at a dentists!
