So DS is just over 1 and I've tried to introduce cow's milk by putting just a little bit in with his formula but he is not keen at all. He barely drank any and then afterwards he sort of spat it up/vomited. What do I do? Do I just keep giving him formula or keep trying to introduce milk every couple of weeks? The other thing I thought about trying was lactose free milk in case he is intolerant...
Have you tried soy? DD would vomit up the dairy range when they were introduced to her so i started her on rice milk and soy milk until she was a bit older and now she can handle everything but cows milk.
DD slowly went off her formula and wouldn't even touch cows milk. We are pretty sure she is lactose intolerant. She now drinks 3 bottles of kids soy milk a day and she loves it. We have never seen her so keen to drink milk as she use to always refuse.
My boy won't drink cows milk. But will have it in his weetbix or porridge etc. He has only drunk water since he was 1. He refused cows milk and formula, so decided it wasn't a big deal for me. He does eat cheese yoghurt etc so I wasn't worried about his calcium intake.
Could you just stick with formula for now and wean off onto water.?
My daughter also wouldn't drink cows milk so I carried on BF until 18 months and then she just had other dairy products which Plunket said was fine. She would drink it if I made a smoothie with a banana or berries though. I thought we are the only species who wean our babies onto another species' milk so we probably don't need it and there are lots of non-dairy foods that provide calcium.
Is he on lactose free formula because regular formula is made from cows milk too. I'd get him tested before you switch to other milk as rice milk has no fat in it so is not really suitable for little kids. I'm not sure about soy milk with little boys... is that an old wives tale??
My DD was/is breastfed, then she started on rice milk in her porridge and occasional milk drink, I avoided soy milk as I thought this was inappropriate for littlies too and I know our naturopath has said not to drink all soy milk as too much is not a good thing, so DH and I have a mix of rice milk and soy. DD has never had cows milk as we just don't have it in the house. She gets her 'fats' from other dairy foods. I know that oat milk is also very good for littlies, but it can get expensive if they are drinking alot of.
I agree with Jessiesmum in that we don't actually need cows milk once we are weened. Good luck
