Topic: Plus size mummies and mummies to be Posted: 06 January 2011 at 4:35pm |
Hey guys,
DH and I are expecting our first baby, a little boy :)
I have been overweight for quite some time now and have been losing a small bit of weight during my pregnancy but now that baby has started to grow I am starting to gain little bits here and there!
My question is I am 20 weeks + 5 days today and still have no sign of a bump. I know that every pregnancy is different so im not expecting to be like everyone but I was just wondering when you were able to distinquish regular tummy fat from baby bump ??
I know that it is likley my bump will just pop when it is ready too but i am just feeling a bit bad that i have nothing noticeable yet. My husband says that the "line" that has been created over the years due to pants etc is straightening out and its all looking like one thing lol but to me thats not baby.
Thanks girls!

I was 20 weeks at the parent and child show this year and none of the stallholders realised I was pregnant, I guess they thought I was just still fat from DD... was a bit gutting but I knew from taking pics each week and watching the changes that I had a bump that was different to how I started out! Plus its hard at the top and when im lying down I can feel where the fat stops and the uterus starts as its all flabby at the bottom, then hard if I push just a little beyond that bit.
Generally with your first it takes longer for baby to 'pop' out from behind the muscles etc in the way, maybe if you take weekly pics then you'll see the difference and it could make you feel a little better about growth etc? I remember when preg with my oldest i used to go to the local library while my ex was working afternoon shifts... it wasnt until mid-late 30 odd weeks that one of the librarians asked if I was pregnant!

You know when your midwife checks your bump, they kind of push their fingers in on a downward slant and somehow they know where you stop and the baby starts?
Next time you visit your MW ask her to show you what she's feeling for. I did that with DS. And it was like a 'wow there really is a difference' kind of thing

For ages I only had a noticeable bump while lying down haha. My squishy tummy took a while to get firm and I finally got my first comment from a stranger around 25 weeks.

Ironically one of my best friends is always saying how jealous she is of my big round tummy... I keep telling her its all in the jeans (I LOVE my jeans, they seriously squish all the fat out of the way ) and baby seems to be sitting fairly high, making it look a bit more rounded! Unfortunately my ass seems to be expanding at about the same rate, looks very balanced, but makes buying clothes a nightmare
The other thing I have found is that its bloody near impossible to find summery tops long enough to accomodate the WHOLE bump, squishy fat bits and all... bless whoever invented belly bands cos they have been saving me the indignity of showing old pre-stretched skin

I completely sympathise - I am plus size and I visited my GPs a few weeks back and the practice nurse that I saw hadnt even realised I was pregnant!!!!
I seemed to pop at about 30weeks, and now def look preggers, but I dont look as pregnant as I am!
I have lost weight the entire time, which is good, but I wish my bump was bigger and rounder.
The good news is that at some point you will suddenly look down and realise that you cant see your toes and that you have a huge belly in the way!

Last pregnancy I was offered a job at 37 weeks and had to say no because I was having a baby in 2 weeks , she hadn't even realised. I was never particularly obvious and had people who met me for the first time but knew I was pregnant say they couldn't believe how small my bump was at around 32 weeks. I noticed the huge difference myself though at around 13 weeks.
This time, I had a comment from someone who knew I was pregnant at around 8 weeks saying that I had a bump already. Very different. But people who didn't know wouldn't be able to tell for quite a while I think.

with my 1st i was ideal weight(wish i knew that then) but didnt really start showing til 25wks+
after 4 kids in under 5yrs i certainly am not ideal weight anymore.
I found I lost weight in the 1st half of all my pregnancies. i had no morning sickness at all. i lost 10kg in my last preg but put it all back on in the 2nd half but was only a few kgs more than orignal pre preg weight. i think by 25ish weeks with my last it was obvious.

I think its different for everyone, whether you are the right weight or overweight.
I was really overweight with ds, my family could notice a bump at 15ish week and I had stranger comment at about 17 weeks, I was getting comments about twins at 25ish weeks. I had a lot of fluid and a biggish baby(9lb 7oz)

lol babykatnz, im totally jealous of your bump and how great you look in those jeans hehe.
Im just on 26weeks now and only starting to show a bump (that tends to disappear at times). With DS i was alot bigger at this stage of the pregnancy. Alot depends on how bubs is positioned.

This is like me. I am quite overweight, and got a comment from a stranger at roughly 17 weeks asking me how far along I was. Then we had this huge talk about babies haha

I'm 14 weeks and enjoying not having a distinguishable bump, there are a few friends that I'd like not to know until I'm a bit further along, 40 weeks seems like such a long time.

I also wondered if once you had baby was it easy to lose all your weight or on the extra weight put on by bubs ?
