First off, I have read all the articles and I know that rear facing is best for as long as possible. Im not after information/article links etc to more pro rear facing articles, just personal experience from OB members.

DD is 13 months and at last plunket check, was 10.5kg and is quite long. Our car seat goes up to 12kg and I am more than happy to keep her RF until then, however we cannot afford another carseat that has a higher limit.
What I am wondering is at what age you turned to FF and what weight etc? Would you have rear faced for longer or less in hindsight?

Also, I have heard that you can go slightly over the 12kg limit, but to what degree and what sort of implications does this have (if anyone knows)? I figure they must have a weight limit for a reason.

Thanks

Hey KL,
I have Tyler FF now. He's only 9.6kg (prob more now it's been a month since he was weighed)

I made the decision to turn him around for a couple of reasons
1) He was arching his back and using the back of the seat as a push off to try and turn around to see me in the front - which I didn't feel was very safe.
2) He CRIED every. single. car ride! And I mean red in the face hot steamy tears crying!
3) His seat is also only to 12kg which for him is a while away and I would have kept RF had it not been for 1 & 2! But I also can not afford another seat.

IMO and I really mean IMO! I think it's safest they're in a carseat at all. Then, if you can RF them for as long as possible do it.

There is so much information out there that tells you this that and the other but if they're in a carseat they are safe if you ask me lol.....

Sorry if I haven't answered your Q lol

xx

I got told by plunket to FF DD at 12 months. She is FF in Dad and Granny's cars but my car which is the seat she is in for the majority of time she is still RF. She is 18mo and still only 9kgs (pixie pants!) so fits well in it still RF. I'm just too lazy to unhook the safety straps and turn it around. Will just wait until #2 is born and i have to move her over to the right side of the backseat.

There is a limit there for a reason- check your manual and if it says 12kg then dont go past it. I would keep her RF till she reach's the limit and if you cant afford a new seat you will have to turn her FF. If you can somehow get another seat that RF longer then I would do that instead of FF to early.

Hi Kerry

We rear faced H until about a month after C was born, so she was about 23months. I would have liked to rear face longer but we couldn't get it to work in my car with C capsule. I'd try to RF right until the 12kg which still could be a while off as their growth slows down. H is almost 3 and is 12.2kgs.

good luck, it's hard being a mummy with all these decisions.

Thanks everyone, I think Ill keep rear facing until either 12kg or just before baby is due, whichever is first.

Keep an eye on the height limit too - some babies will grow out of the seat for height before weight. Don't go over the limits of the seat, turn her FF once you reach the limits.

Ditto that! Most children will grow out of car seats height wise well before they do so weight wise. RFing or FFing, the most important thing is to use the seat correctly!
