Topic: Burwood and St Georges out of action Posted: 22 March 2011 at 12:34pm |
Hi there,
I am due in 4 weeks time and am concerned with Burwood Birthing Unit being closed as I have heard it has no damage yet remains closed. We need some answers!
I have contacted the press about this who are very keen to hear from mothers to be asap today as they are doing a story on it. They would like to photograph someone (i'm not keen on having my pic taken although happy to tell my story)
She is also interested to hear from mothers to be who were to birth at St Georges and are concerned with minimal options.
Please contact Georgie (press reporter) on 027 349 2040, she has a deadline of 3pm today.

Have you spoken to your MW about it? There are reason why Burwood is still shut and I am sure your MW will be aware of this.
I agree the options are limited but I do know that St G's are working hard to offer another option to mothers. Hotel suites have been discussed and this is looking more viable as an option now that the RWC is no longer in ChCh.

Hi Peanut,
thanks for your response, yes I have spoken to my MW and she has had no reason given to her either along with a couple others I have questioned.
I would just like to know why it's closed, I will understand if it is damaged, there seems to be a big lack of information out there.

Perhaps they are having to use the beds for the massive increase in spinal injury victims from the earthquake. Or maybe they don't have enough available staff to keep it running at the moment.
Have you tried just phoning the DHB and asking?

This article says that St Georges are probably going to close their maternity unit altogether!

yeh I imagine there would be a massive increase in numbers in the spinal and burns units at this time.
I did call the DHB corporate office and they put me through to Burwood Hospital the lady I spoke to had no more information than I had, she put me through to Women's who didn't know anything about burwood either..
It's just really strange that no-one knows if it's actually damaged in any way or not.

It is damaged as far as I know. I also know that St G's is not shutting as a maternity unit. It will be rebuilt and they are looking at options as a stop gap in the mean time.
I know its a sh*tty time but there are other options and although Lincoln and rangiora are not ideal they are there and avaialable as is ChCh womans for those in need. There is plenty of MW support out there as lots are no longer working as ward MW's at St G's so they will be picking up the slack.

Don't know anything about Burwood but St G's is coming down. The building is really old (as some of you would know) and structually it is not safe at all. They are looking at rebuilding but from what I can gather it may be at a different site altogether.
Although its an inconvienience to you especially when you are so close to giving birth and feel so up in the air, it is because of yours and your babies safety that you can't go to these places.
While I know it would be good to have better communication (and not to say frustrating at the very least) I think there is just so much going on that its hard to get all the information out there. At the end of the day all those people are working in the interests of our safety

Buttersmum, I so agree with everything you said!
Burwood apparently have water issues. I checked with someone today. Once they can be sorted it will reopen. It is not being used as a ward for any other area.
Also, buttersmum, where did you hesar that they may build on another site? As far as I was aware they would rebuild on the same site.

thanks for the reassuring info wish they would update the DHB website to keep people posted so we don't have to speculate and feed off word of mouth.. but oh well I hope all the staff are still getting paid.
