Took a home pregnacy test yesterday and it came back positive. This was not planned so am very freaked out. I have a doctors apt with avo, what should I expect. Im estimating I am just over 5 wks. Will they do another urine test or blood test or both? Do they scan...? Im very new to all this and would appreciate any advice!

Hi there - depends on the dr but I didn't do urine or blood test at doctors to confirm pregnancy as already had a postive home test. If you know when your last period was that it is useful to determine your due date. Doctors don't do scans but may want to send you for one if you are not sure of dates. Hope you have some good support around, everyone is very helpful on here if you need to know anything. Let us know how you get on and try not to freak out too much

I found that my GP, although lovely, was pretty useless about giving me any info when I found out I was pg with Jack. If you decide to go with a midwife then I would really recommend getting in touch with 1 (or more) asap as they can book up fast, no matter what your GP says.

All the best for your appt this afternoon
Lindsey

Thanks for the advice. Doctor didn't test me again (bought another one on the way home though which was positive again) but just loaded me up with info and told me to get a midwife. It still has not hit me that this is actually happening. When does it start to feel real?

When the baby is born!!??! It is always quite surreal to me, I sometimes look at my 4yo and can't beleive he is actually mine. Good luck with the next 8+mths

Thanks Lindsey! I think that sounds about right, it currently feels like someone is playing a joke on me and will suddenly yell "April fools" Im hoping my first scan will cement it somehow!

Hey
Sorry everything seems such a shock right now. I am about as pregnant as you are and although it was planned it definitely does not seem real. I am thinking the first scan will make it seem real for me too!

Don't panic I hope you have a great support network.

My first was a real surprise (had only been with my partner not even 3 months when we found out) and yes big shock, I didn't do anything about a MW till I was 13 weeks as I thought thats what you did (I know better now!) and didn't have a regular doctor. I ended up going to an emergency doctors centre in Wellington and they referred me for a scan and told me to get a MW.
The scan was where it really hit home there was a little baby in there BUT I still sometimes look at her (she is 1 now) and go WOW thats MY baby.
I don't think it really really sunk in until she was born lol, up until then somehow in my mind I was pregnant but wouldn't have a baby at the end or something?..

I wouldn't be without her though, most wonderful being in my life :D
Kiara is 3 and Teagan is 2, now we're expecting our long awaited 3rd!

Thanks guys. Is definitly a shock my partner and I have only been together 4 months and funnily enough the due date will be our 1 yr anniversary. He is being really supportive but its hard as we are waiting until 12 weeks to tell anyone so its a bit scary trying to figure it out on our own.

Hi there,

It was a pretty big shock when I found out I was UTD... I was 4.5 years into a 5 year degree, so was 6 months preggers sitting final exams! I found it pretty hard to come to terms with the fact I was going to have a baby - DH was way more excited than I was - I honestly thought I would be a terrible mum and never bond with bubs..

BUT... Gawd I love her to pieces! We often say we dont know what life would be like without her, shes only been with us for almost 3 months but it feels as though she has been there always..

I dont know when it felt real - I guess after I had her was when i really bonded. We found out the sex at the 20 week scan and I felt that really helped with coming to terms with it - I started talking to HER, and buying pink stuff etc..

When I did my first home test and it was +ve I went to see my (useless) GP who didnt repeat it because apparently the home ones are really reliable and if they are +ve they really mean it! I got my MW pretty early on because I like to be super organised :) They will walk you though everything and should be able to make the whole process less daunting :)

I had no idea either - was really clueless - but just take each week as it comes, try and enjoy all the bits of being preggers (yep even the morning sickness! ) because its all over before you know it and you will have a precious wee parcel in your arms ready to enrich your life in a way you never thought possible
