 Topic: toilet training tips for 13 month old

he is showing signs of it.
he is taking off his nappy.
swatting everywhere without it on.
trying to get onto the toilet.
he is not walking and does not have words really either.
he has taken 2 steps yesterday.
can anyone help please.

hmmm might be a bit hard to tt him if hes not walking or talking
but you could just leave the potty out so he can sit on it...and just praise him everytime he goes.

Although he is aware i wouldnt say he is ready.
I would leave the potty out so he is comfortable around it.
But like PP said it would be quite hard with him not walking and unable to tell you when he needs to go.
Maybe wait until he is walking and see how he goes then.

So doable :o) When you know he needs to go put him on the potty and when he wees make a hissing sound. This way he will quickly pick up how to communicate his needs with you, and soon he can make it himself and you can put him on in time. Have heaps of nappyfree time (we use knickers to catch the poo but she still can notice wees)
Also read this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elimination_communication and google and you tube "potty free" and you will gets heaps of info.
ETA just saw youre in the hutt, there is a potty group for people to meet others doing early potty training too, I will PM you some info for it :)

How r u getting on? DS has been doing almost all his poo and about 5 wees a day on the potty since he was 5 months. He turned 1 this week, and is even dry 11 hrs at night about every second night- well on the way to complete TT :)

Im sorry and I know im gonna offend people...but I just don't get the logic.
Isn't this more like "mummy training "? learning your babies signals and when they need to go ?
If you put ANY baby at any age on a potty and wait ,eventually gravity will take its course and they will "go " so I don't get how that is toilet training for them, more for the parent.
My friend did this with her 4month old , he couldn't even sit up himself she had to hold him, and sure, for a year they used hardly any nappies....but now at 5 hes regressed and is having frequent accidents.
Oh well, to each their own, I did it the old fashioned way with my now 8 year old daughter and she hasn't ever had any problems .
and not meaning any offence,just curious as to how it really works

I'm interested to see how the OP has got on?
I'm no where near toilet training, but have noticed that Cooper is dry for long periods during the day now.
Next summer is when i'll try.

Kelly I totally agree with you I dont see the point in toilet training until they are at least walking for a few weeks/months.

I think if you are home ALL the time - yeah, why not give it a try, but if you plan on being out and about, i can see you running into problems. personally I would juts wait until he can take himself to the toilet physically, and then give the training a go.

hmm im interested to know if anyone has successfully TT before the child was 2yrs. DS is 18months and showing signs but im not sure if its too early.

Back when I was little it was normal for people to be TT by 18 months- day and night.
The Kelly - I also thought that it was just mummy training- and it definatly was for us in the beginning. DS was going 8 days without a poo and plunket advised lots of nappy free time- so I began to see his signs of when he was about to go and stuck him on potty.
Now tho u actually see him bare down when he sits on the potty, and wee. I certainly dont leave him sitting there. Hes only on for as long as u or I take to wee.
We are a long way off TT, and Im definalty not going to force it. It still amazes me that he does definatly have control.
