Topic: HELP! My son wont to poos in the toilet. Posted: 17 July 2010 at 3:35pm |
My son is 3 years old and has no problem doing wees in the toilet but when it comes to poos he wont do it in the toilet. He says he likes doing it in his undies. We have tried numerous incentives but he still refuses. We have caught him at the right moment about 3 times now and he has done it in the toilet. Any ideas on what else we could do to help him?

Hi ya Shaz, how you doing ? ( its Kam btw)
I had a real problem with C in this regard, went to a few drs and psychologists etc, and finally found that what worked best was a star chart with and a lot of praise every time she went in the toilet, it was a long process , but so long as you keep at it, they eventually get the idea .
We did the chart so that if she went for a week she would get some sort of treat , and we made sure she knew what it was for , then we moved up to no poos for two weeks and so on .
Sometimes they don't like the splash , so we put toilet paper down , and C also didn't like the having to sit there waiting , so we had a tape that played a story and if she hadn't done anything by the time the tape was over, she could get off , but with the reminder to go again later .
Hope some of that helps

My girl would only do it on a potty at first, she'd pee on the toilet no probs but not poo... so we just had the potty for poo and she eventually was okay with the loo too... maybe it is the splash like Kelly said

Mine fella is the same, refuses point blank to go poos in the toilet, thankfully he asks for a nappy to do it in so at least it isn't too messy but really starting to do my head in as he is fine with wees and knows when the poo is coming just won't go to the toilet to do it. We have started to bring to the toilet when he is finished and flicking the contents in so he can see where it is supposed to go. At the moment we are resorting to bribery he knows he is getting a Buzz lightyear when he finally does it - yeap we are that desperate! So he keeps saying when I do poos in the toilet I get a buzz and yet still rufuses ahhhh

Jack has been TT for wees for about 4-5 months now, still not one success in the toilet with poos. We've tried everything I can think of. I have heard it can take kids (especially boys apparently) up to a year longer to train for poos after they have trained for wees.
So we're just waiting it out until he's been TT for a year, then will be a bit more active about it. Until then, hmm fun cleaning!

Hey Kelly, Im good thanks :) Cheers for you advice. I like the idea of a tape. Might look into that.
Shelly: I so know what you mean about bribery! We resorted to that too, but still NO POOS IN THE TOILET!
Ems: You are so right. I read an article in a Treasures mag about boys and toilet training. It said sometimes boys think their penis may drop off and that can put them off doing poos in toilet ( thank god adult males dont think like this eh!)

you have to be consistent and persistent. my oldest was the same and he refused. lucky for us he always went at night - about ten minutes after he had a night nappy on. because we knew when he needed to go we just extened out his bedtime and got him to sit on the toilet... after about a week of doing this he finally did it in the toilet and once he got the hang of it was fine....
diane levy in her book starts out by encouraging the child to do the poos in the correct room first so they arent running and hiding or doing it where ever they want.

We have this issue too .... as do most of the boys in my coffee group! Thankfully Jake still asks for a nappy to poo (we haven't had ANY accidents of either kind since he TT'd quite late) - but considering hes known when he's gonna poo for 18months, I actually thought he'd get poos first. We have resorted to bribery too (a big digger) but since he hasn't been wee TT'd for long we're just gonna ride it out a bit longer.
Will be keeping an eye on this for more advice though ......

I forgot to say -- the reason Jake won't go on the toilet is cos he only poo's standing up. We did get all poos on the potty at 20 months, for about 2 weeks, but at that stage he didn't get when he needed to wee, so we left it. And also he was getting so upset and we had to hold him to get him to do it ..... most of the time he actually stood above the potty.
I have tried getting him to stand in the bathroom / loo and do it. He usually end up mucking around in there, then comes back out and does it behind the table.
Will go and read the article ....

Mine won't do poo's in the toilet - potty etc... he's quite happy to poo his night nappy or undies - example this morning is - I was making up a start chart just for toilet training (as he has regrest yet again with wee's) and talking about it to him - had my back turned for liek a minute and he had poo'd in his pants!
I am so over it and feel like crying about it (but what good would that do huh!)
We know he knows when he has done both poo's and wee's but he doesn't care if he stays wet or poo'd.
When is it time to go to a child phyco?

I am a survivor! DD1 was TT at 2 and refused from day one to go on the toilet. I tried everything bribery, anger, sympathy, everything and still it was a no go. Then she got constipated ... and then she got lactulose to stop the constipation ... and after 60mls a day for a week what do you know she says "i need to go poos, might try the toilet" and off she went and did it. That was two weeks ago and now everyday she wants to go poos on the toilet. It was all over and I can't believe how easily she just went after over a year of grief! I think if it is soft enough, and it takes no effort at all to get it out they are happy to sit there and do it. DD1 was a stand up and hide girl and the faces she would pull were hilarious. But since she has had the lactulose the faces have gone as it is obviously no effort to go and she is happy with them being soft.
Good luck!

Nikki I went to a toilet training course by a continence nurse and she said that kids wanting to poo standing up is actually a really common issue with them refusing to go on the toilet. She suggested that if you are using a toilet then you give them a stool so that their knees are slightly higher than their hips, and show them how to lean forward to make doing poos easier. Apparently this makes pooing a bit easier for them.

Thanks Shelt, may have to try that. For now I've been letting him have a nappy and stand next to the loo ... trying to get him to sit on it with the nappy on but hes not too keen. He has a stool to get up but its not high enough to have his knees up.
Maybe we should dose him up on lactulose!!
