How did you do it?

DS is currently at the in-between phase. He usually wakes any time from 5.30-7am so depending on when he woke he is down for morning sleep between 8.30-9.30am. Sleeps for 1.5hrs. He doesn't consistently sleep through the night so if he has had a bad night he will sleep for longer.

He goes down for PM sleep usually about 4hrs after he has woken from AM sleep and that sleep is also around 1.5hr sometimes 2hrs. But lately he has been refusing to go down in the afternoons but then is a right grump by 5pm and loses the plot or if he does sleep he is still bouncing off the walls at 8pm when his normal bedtime is 7pm.

I tried cutting his morning sleep out and keeping him up, having an earlier lunch and putting him down after that but find he sleeps for only 1.5hr anyway and that is obviously not enough cos he is super grumpy!

Any bright ideas? What was your 17mth olds routine??

I don't remember exactly how we did this, but I was working in the mornings and Ds was going to his aunts so he wouldn't get a sleep till we got home around lunch time. I think I just kept him busy, which kept him happy. He went down to one sleep around 10mths. These days I have to be careful that he doesn't fall asleep in the car on short journeys home otherwise that will be his nap for the day. He normally goes down for a nap around mid afternoon unless he is ready for one before that. And sleeps for 2-3 hrs.

MrsB, Oliver took a while to transition. He basically started refusing his afternoon sleep so we had a few LONG days. I then started going out more in the mornings to keep him awake. I try and keep him up til after lunch so 12.30 ish but sometimes he goes down earlier. He sleeps 1-1.5hrs total but has never been a good day sleeper.

Same as Tibby. We just started pushing the morning nap out - to 10.30ish, then 11.30ish, and now he goes down at 12.30 / 1ish. He'll normally sleep for 2-3hrs, but when he was transitioning from 2 naps he'd only do 1.5hrs. It's just a case of perserving really - taking him out in the morning so he gets tired, and enduring the loooong afternoons until he adjusts...

DS would have his morning sleep as normal, but his afternoon nap would get later and later - in the end it was only 45 mins at 4pm. It wasn't long after that that I moved his morning nap late enough that I could drop the pm one.

Tyler has recently gone from 2 to 1 naps about a month ago! So like everyone else pretty much he wakes up at 7am and now lasts until after lunch and then he has about 2 hours nap time which is good as before he went down to 1 nap his 2 naps were about 30 mins each

Amelia is now 15 months old. She went to 1 sleep a day just before 12 months old. Basically she refused her afternoon sleep.

The next day we kept her up until 12:30.   Lunch about 11am and then a bottle just before bed.

We have had some days where we have had to walk her around outside (she loves being outside) or getting her involved in something she loves to keep her awake. Over time she has adjusted to one sleep .

Bascially how we did it was just to make the decision that she was now on one sleep rather than 2 and to plan accordingly.

When C switched from one sleep to two he started refusing the afternoon sleep so I kept him up later in the morning. It took a week or so (maybe longer I can't remember) for him to extend that middle of the day sleep to a nice long one. We also had a month or so where he went back to two sleeps for a while and then the transition was the same the second time round too.

How about cutting the morning nap to be a bit shorter and just a "top up" and then he could last a little longer before his next nap and then it would end later in the day seeing you through to bed time - just in the mean time this could work.

My wee man is on 1 nap and started to transition around 1 year and we gradually shifted the morning nap later and later. Some days he sleeps 1.5 hours and sometimes 2-3 hours. Just depends on what he has been doing or how the previous day/night went.

We did the same as Rainbow when DD started refusing her afternoon nap. Reduced her morning nap to an hour max, then down at about 2pm for a longer afternoon nap, gradually cutting back the morning nap and bringing the afternoon nap forward. Even now that shes dropped to one she still has days when she needs two, today being one of them after a rotten night teething! Good luck, its a difficult transition thats for sure!

Nathan started to refuse his morning sleep so I kept him up. He now has lunch at 11.30am and then off to bed by 12pm for 2-3 hours.

This is a yuck time- took us a few weeks to sort! There are two methods:

1. - push morning nap back later and later by 10 mins every 3 days untill they go down around 11ish.

2- the shorter morning top up nap which gets dropped as they get older.

I did the pushing back am nap because afternoons were such a drama. Did this at around 1 year. Daylight savings was a godsend TBH, as she now goes down around 12.

Some days they only sleep 45 mins in the morning and thats a two nap day. I found we could get a stroller sleep in then and got us through to a 6.30 bedtime.

DD woke early for a while, due to tiredness, but now does a good 2-3 hours over lunch, so the early wakes hopefully have fixed themselves. I think your LO's early am sleep will be contributing to his early morning wakes TBH - to me that seems an early nap time for someone his age?

My top tip is to take your LO out in the morning and give them some that stimulates them and physically tires them - playcentre worked miracles.

Good luck is a bit trial and error but does sort itself.

like others have said i found that it worked better for us keeping him up with a nice busy morning out, so at this age we started some morning activities like playgroups, music, gym etc. Think my boy was about 14 months. Some days he'd do 1 and others 2 naps for a few weeks and then we just went for it.

My DD still generally has 2 naps at 18 months, with the morning nap now gradually being phased out - some days she is ok with this and some she still wants a morning nap!
We have always limited naps to a maximum of 3 hours a day so that at night she is ready for a long sleep, and we wake her up at the end of nap time if she is not already awake.
DD wakes between 7/730am. At first she slept for around an hour in the morning at about 9am then for 2 hours from 1230-1430. From about 13 months the morning nap slowly moved to about 10am and down to 30 minutes maximum and her midday nap to about 1300-1430/1500, but no later than 3pm. Bed time is 7pm.
I've found if she has too much sleep in the day she won't go down at 7pm and the night is restless.
As with everyone else I'd also suggest keeping busy in the morning to keep bub awake, but also not to allow too much sleep in the day.
Good luck!

We are going through this right now too MrsB. How have you been getting on?

Daniel wakes at 6am and generally wants to go back to bed at 8:30/9am. He'll sleep anywhere from 2-3 hours at this nap lately and the last few days has refused his afternoon nap at 1:30/2pm. This makes for a very tired & grumpy toddler at 4pm onwards.

Im trying really hard to keep him awake in the mornings longer. Yesterday he only made it to 9:20am. That was after going out for a walk and trying to keep busy. This morning Im going out to meet friends and their bubs for morning tea, it meant to be at 9:30am so Im going to try and take him and keep him up til 10:30am or 11am but I don't like my chances...

Its a diffucult in-between phase as I can't enrol him in any swimming or music classes as I don't know what time to choose? Early morning or late morning???

We're going through the same thing at the moment, even though DS is still pretty young to drop to one nap. But he's refusing the 2nd one, or if we get two in, getting him down for night is taking forever.

We've been trialing one nap this week and I was aiming for around 12-12.30pmish. Tuesday he fell asleep in the car on the way home at 11.15am and then Thursday he had a nap in the car at 10am, but apart from that he's lasted quite well. Was quite fidgety when we were out this morning and then only napped 45 mins, but even then was happy and playing till he conked out on his bottle at 6.30pm.     Today was an earlier start than other mornings though, so could have been why today was harder (or maybe a week of one nap has hit him).

I've gone with the keep him busy in the morning method and then today it was also a keep him busy in the afternoon method.

It's definitely made getting ready in the morning a lot more challenging as I'd use the morning nap time to have a shower and pack the bag/get food together and now that all has to happen while he's awake. On the plus side we can finally go to all these 10am start kiddie activities!!!!

Argh, Jackson has one sleep at DC from 12-2pm but still has 2 naps at home. So today I tried dropping the afternoon nap and it was a total disaster. He made it to 11am ok so I started giving him lunch at 11.15am so that he was in bed by 12 at the latest, and he started falling asleep eating lunch He only had 1/4 of his lunch and we put him to bed.

So, I think we will stick to 2 naps for a little while longer. Im not in any rush to stop them.
