Topic: Does anyone know these midwives? Posted: 14 February 2011 at 2:49pm |
Hi ladies, I am looking for information on the following Auckland based midwives. I have had a look online and on this site but can only find limited info.
Anyone used any of these ladies? Experiences - good and bad?
Also if you know their back up let me know.
Paddy Hughes (Onehunga) - back up Linda Wolting
Harata Jahnke (Onehunga) - back up Varni Archary
Christine Ealson (Onehunga) - back up Gaylene Bogle
Cath Doherty (Onehunga)- back up Leonie Bowley
Thanks for your help! Such a tough decision.

Paddy Hughes was my midwife with first boy and i really liked her. But her back up did the delivery and i was less keen on her. She didn't do anything wrong but just didn't click as much. Paddy is great tho!

I called Harata Jahnke last night and I really liked her. I think I will go with her for now and see how our first meeting goes on 17th March.
If I dont like her after that I will start looking again - but our personalities seem to click on the phone.

BabyBoyPlusBean - I couldn't agree more about Christine, started out with her, but she got worse and worse with the personal info, all about her ex and her son and stuff. In the end I had some potential complications and she just didn't feel right so I transferred to an OB, could not be happier with that decision.
Good luck kwikit and congrats on your pregnancy

I have Gaylene at the moment - she seems really nice and down to earth and puts us at ease no complaints from me at all.

I've has gaylene with my 3rd child and she was fantastic, couldn't ask for a better midwife. My first 2 children were born in the USA and had OB's with both so when coming to NZ midwifes was quite a new thing for me and was hesistant in having one but once I met Gaylene she was wonderful and now I'm almost due with my fourth and have Gaylene again. You will not be disappointed give her a call 021887197 and see for yourself :)

I liked Christine, she was pretty quirky and repeated herself a bit with personal info as was mentioned but she was a really good midwife and had a lot of respect at the Hospital, not afraid to boss the doctors around if it was in your best interests, which is important! She was amazing for the birth and stayed with me for the whole 18 hours at the hospital, not leaving until my son was born after 6am. She is very committed to her job and if you can see past the quirky factor I would definitely recommend her as a very competent midwife

I feel like I should add to my post above because it does sound like we only changed because of a personality clash.
What actually pushed me to change was the way she handled a scan report saying baby was 2 weeks ahead in growth. She asked me to do a GTT (which I was happy to do) and then said that we would have to repeat it multiple times because she didn't trust the lab and that her last patient with a large baby had a still birth. It was completely over the top, even if I had had high sugars it was still not appropriate to use the death of another women's child to impress upon me how important the tests were.
There were other things too, she couln't find a heart beat on doppler at the same appointment and said 'dont worry its not dead" which again I was pretty shocked by. She was also very rude to the reception staff where we had our scan done and changed her mind about key decisions like where she recommended giving birth (from hospital to birthcare).
Im glad that she was good at your birth Kaybee, but after my experience I could never recommend Christine Ealson to anyone. I had to change LMCs at 24 weeks and chose an OB that we couldnt really afford because I was so affected by what she had said about the still born baby.

Hi Kiwikt,
Just wondering how you're getting on with Harata? I'm on the midwife hunt at the moment and she's available in my area.

Hi Chants,
I did not go with her in the end, as I was recommended to the ADHB high risk team by my fertility specialist. So I am now under shared care through ADHB - MW and OB.
So I never met her so I cant suggest much.
What I would suggest is that you insist on meeting them straight away to see if you get along. An meet at least 2.
