Hi,
DS has always been qute clingy, it started at about 9 months, its gone through phases, sometimes its worse than others.
Anyway he goes to daycare 3 days a week and a friend of mine has him another day, he always gets upset when we go but is ok.
But he doesn't seem to like joining in with much, he will play by himself or play with one child, but get a group event and he just doesn't like it, tried to take him to kindy gym last friday, it was a fairly big noisy event, but so much to climb on and all others his age dived in but he would not let go.
I know all kids are different and I have no issues, I guess i'm after good ways of encouraging him to try things without freaking him out too much.
I know he loves to run and play at home, but if I take him somewhere and try and put him down to play he just screams to be picked up.

Have you guys got a lollipops or something similar near by? We took Daniel to ours regularly and rang and asked when the quietest times were and he got use to being in an exciting place but with fewer kids until he got more confidence. Things like that could help maybe? When we went there was usually only one or two other kids it was brilliant.

thats a good idea, he was getting more confident, but then we had family visiting and went on holiday and he didn't see another child for about a month!!
We'll try and find a centre around near us.

I have a shy child and I have found playcentre (where you stay with the child) to be the best thing for bringing her out of her shell. She has the security of me being there with her, but she is integrating with the other children more and more. She still prefers solo play, but doesn't have an absolute melt down if others join in now.

Also, in the bigger "group" situations are there other kids there that he knows well/sees more often? That might help him to feel more secure and confident in an overwhelming place.
Agree with taking him to places like Lollipops/Chipmunks during quiet periods. Callum is pretty outgoing but when we go somewhere totally chaotic even he will get clingy and shy. But the more he feels "at home" somewhere the more confident he is IYKWIM.

Have you had his ears and adnoids checked? My son was having a very hard time adjusting to daycare and it turned out it was because of an adnoid infection. And when he was in a situation with a lot of noise it caused him pain and confusion. Since he's had a course of antibiotics he is doing just fine and even making friends.
It could be an age thing too, children tend not to 'play with' until some time around 3 years old until then they tend to 'play beside' other kids.
