Topic: HG Coping Techniques Posted: 10 October 2011 at 12:49pm |
I've got hyperemesis (again :sigh:) and am curious as to how others coped with little support and more children. Routines? Food ideas?? Amusement??? Anything!!
My mums staying with us for 2 weeks to help out but then we're back to me and the boys by ourselves M-F 7am-6pm, no vehicle ATM and no support other than what DH can give when hes home. Daycare is NOT an option so ideas other than that would be awesome thanks - ways to keep the necessities of the house running somewhat smoothly while I can barely move.
ETA how can I still spell something wrong while I'm thinking about the correct spelling as I type it??!!

ok a couple of ideas I had (may or may not help, I have never been in your position but was trying to think of things that Might help )
Make up lunch boxes at night (get DH to?) for your boys and for you. Pop them in the fridge and get them out when you need them the next day. I would get the little compartment type ones and fill all the spaces with little snacks (mini sammies, cheese, crackers, cut up fruit, raisons, dried fruit & nuts for you, a couple of yummy treats) that you and the boys could snack on all day. Saves you having to make lunch etc
umm maybe set up some activity boxes (colouring, lego, cars, blocks etc) that you can get out and your DS's can play on their own?
Get a cleaner? not sure if that is a possibility but even if you could get one for a couple of hours once a week, just for the next few months (while you feel sick?) Ours used to cost $30 a week and she was fantastic.
will keep thinking...
Hope you feel better soon. Is it likely to last the whole pregnancy or will it get better?

Very interested to see what other ideas people can come up with, as this is my main fear if/when we decide to TTC #3 as last time I suffered from HG pretty much the whole pregnancy.
For dinners/lunch- can you make up a whole bunch during the weekend (or better yet get your DH to make up some) and then freeze them, so you can put one out in the morning to deforst. Or if you can afford it there are a couple of companies that sell ready up homecooked meals.
How good is DS1 at tidying up? Does he have a chore chart so he can do a couple of things himself to help out around the home- e.g. tidy his own room, pack up toys?
I am sure a couple of other things will come to mind as well......

Ooooh the lunchbox ideas is brilliant!!
My mum is down to help with the boys and shes busy filling the freezer with meals but I like the meals on wheels idea too. It would supplement the frozen meals well and make everything last.
Sophie I was sick right through my last 2 pregnancies
Hahaha Stace yeah well if I can't come up with a plan to meet DH and Mums approval I'll be being shipped back up north with Mum next week

I got a cleaner once a week for a few weeks - only $15 for a couple of hours and she did the basics. It wasn't up to my usual standard but it was pretty clean and tidy and that made such a difference! She even did the dishes which was wonderful.
Try really hard to get dinner in a slowcooker in the morning or whenever you are feeling good (if the time says 6-8hrs on low, you can put it on high for just 3-4, and if you cover it with a teatowel it cooks much faster too, so you don't need to worry about doing it first thing in the morning). If you can't handle the smell, put it somewhere else - in another room behind closed doors, or even in the garage or shed! I mean, why not? It's not going to upset the food at all.
Hope that helps, I feel your pain!! I hate being pregnant :(

I've got HG again too and it's much harder when you have a child (or more!) to look after. I am lucky that DH is really helpful when he's here - he does the dishes in the evenings and does heaps on the weekends to help. We have a cleaner once a fortnight which is brilliant.
The only thing I would add to what's been said is that when I cook, I cook in BULK so that there's enough leftover for lunches the next day or even dinner (no complaints about same meal two days in a row allowed!). Stuff like a big pasta bake or pot of curry can go a long way. Even if I'm doing meat and vegetables, I cook loads of vegetables so that we can have them reheated the following night and all I need to worry about is meat - and I have the freezer stocked with "easy" meat like schnitzel and lamb chops, which DH can manage if I"m not feeling up to it :)
Good luck!

Nic its definitely improved since #1 if thats any consolation!! I kinda have more ways to get through it so while its tougher having littlies its also easier since I know what to expect plus I don't let anyone dick me round like they did first time
Well freezer is full of meals and instant kinda food like roasties and sausages. I can't cook meat AT ALL if it involves any prep coz I spend most of the time retching in the sink. My MW and doc have mentioned it being a mind over matter issue but obviously my mind doesn't like being on top :sigh: its all good though my mums been a legend so no worries in that department for a few weeks anyway
We're looking into a cleaner but TBH DH actually does a great job PLUS it looks like we'll qualify for homehelp coz of being so sick plus I've got SPD issues already so FX thats a go coz its free lol and it'd be very helpful!
I'm back on an Odansetron/Cyclizine cocktail so I'm actually managing to keep more fluids down now so thats helping me feel better too. I've also found that lots of sleep makes a difference too. Thanks to mum being here I've slept for 4-6hrs a day plus all night of course once shes gone that'll change but its def been a help while I've had the opportunity!!

Me too!! (reason i'm "putting" it off...not "put" it off though!!)
I think there should be some sticky topics on HG. It was me a couple of years ago thinking that I had just normal morning sickness...Chucking every 20 minutes isn't normal though!!
Grr Babe - if it were "mind over matter" then there wouldn't be a problem, cos no one chooses to wretch into the sink when you need to prepare food. HG is not in your head!!!! Glad you've got your fridge stocked!
