I'm no help lol, I've just been going through the hospital but they're really nice.
Umm, theres 2 groups of Independant MWs that I know of, Mill Rd Midwives, 437 5570 and the Whangarei Midwives Group, 438 1806. I gave both of them a ring last time but the Mill Rd Midwives had just had their rooms burned down and the Whangarei Midwives Group didnt ring me back, even though I rang and left a message, twice. 
Theres also the Te Puawai Ora midwives which work through the hospital 430 2324. They also hold Antenatal Classes (which I think you can sign up for no matter which MW you go with)
You could also just ring 0800 434 2686 which is the DHB Midwifery Service, or 0800 696 439 which should put you through to the Team Midwives.

thanks lisa! i rang the whangarei midwives group yesterday but i just got an answerphone...its a bit hard trying to do it from work! are the ones you are going through pretty much the same as the independent ones except they just do it out of the hospital? you dont have to pay for them or anything?
man im so clueless.

I dont have to pay anything so I think thats the same, only my MW appointments are at the hospital and I think when I do eventually go into labour then I will more than likely just get the MW on shift in the Delivery Suite at the time, but I could be wrong on that one, I havent been through it before.
I do get the same MW at every Antenatal appointment because one works Monday through Wednesday and the other Thursday - Friday and I try to make my appointments fro the same days of the week. I think they rotate the MWs from the hospital to Te Puawai Ora 6 monthly though, so you may start out with one MW and end up with another. It's not something that bothers me at all but it may bother other people, or you.
If you want I do have a phone that you could use to make all your calls. No worries about your boss overhearing something lol.

I rang around for ages trying to find a MW - took me 3 weeks!!! No one ever got back and when they did said they were full (I am due 1st Jan - can't blame them!!)
I finally found one..but yeah!!
I was talking to a lady who works at the hosp and she said I should have just gone through there.
I hope the search goes well!!
There are classes that are also run through the parents centre - they cost 120 - where the hosp ones are free. However we have to go through parents centre as my Dh works at the times of the free ones!!

Yep if you want to get into the hospital antenatal classes you need to book in early because they do get really booked up. They do them on a Tuesday or Wednesday evening or 1 weekend a month if that would suit you better Fletch.

Im going thru mill rd midwives, ive got a lady named tina sherman, she was reccommended to me by a couple of people, and shes lovely i like her alot. heres her number 4350445. i rang afetr 5 and got her straight.
Did you get a bounty pregnancy pack from the doc? if ya did then there should be a couple pamphlets of midwife places in there.
They are free by the way.

If you get hosp midwives you usually see a different mw each time and get whoever is on shift at the times delivering your baby!
I found out I was UTD at 8 weeks and called over 10 mws until I finally got one! And by that stage I was 10 weeks.

Neither of the midwives rooms have receiptionists - that's why you have to leave a message if no-one answers the phone. Try their cellphone numbers which should be listed in the phone book. It's a case of ringing them all and seeing who's available when you're due. There is a shortage of independent midwives and I don't think it's just in Whangarei.
I had an independent with my first baby but she was on leave and I had complications and I ended up having hospital midwives. They were all amazing and I couldn't have asked for better care. Don't be afraid of "just going to the hospital". You might be allocated a midwife who will stay with you as long as her shift allows, if you're lucky enough to have a short labour! I had a prolonged labour and ended up seeing the same 3 midwives, over several shifts! They were awesome.
I can recommend Leanne Going and Anne Nichol from personal experience.
