Hi there,

I took my 1 year, 1 week old to plunket today and the nurse was concerned about his head size, it is off the chart! He has always had a large head, even in utero, however he is a big boy to go with it. The nurse recommended I go to the doc to get it checked out, which I will do but am interested if anyone else has kids with big heads.

The nurse was pleased with all other aspects of my son's development, he crawls, cruises, has about 15 words, is very confident and social. He understands a lot of words and phrases (eg, let's go, bye bye, no, kiss, hug). He's not walking yet but doesn't seem far off it. I did a google search and found that a big head can be a sign of autism but none of his other characteristics seem to indicate autism - he has been smiling since 3 weeks old, constantly babbles / talks and as I mentioned, is very social.

Still I can't help worrying a little ..... can anyone reassure me?

Don't listen to Plunket!!!

I was told at DS's 15 month check that one leg was shorter than the other, referred to dr and then a specialist who wondered what my plunket nurse was on - his legs are exactly the same.

My boy has always had a big head too - it runs in the family, plunket haven't mentioned his head since he was very small, I think they forget. Plunket nurses are well meaning but I believe probably over cautious.

If he is hitting all signs, I would say all is well and good. It doesn't hurt to go to the Dr but I would really really not worry - easier said than done I know

The plunket checks are to screen for possible probs so saying "don't listen to plunket" is probably not the best idea... I mean they are there to help... Often when they raise concerns about some area of development all will turn out to be fine, but IMO it is much better to be aware and be able to monitor the situation. Better safe than sorry I say...

In regards to your wee boy Hope I think it sounds like he is developing nicely and that you have nothing to be concerned about at this point. In saying that I would follow up with the Dr as plunket suggested... Does he have a genetic predisposition to having a big head? As elfsmum mentioned this seems to often be the cause ...

Hi, Freckle, yes I'm definitely taking my son to the doctor. And yes, my son's dad is a big man with a big old head.

I was talking to my dad about this today and he said he has a big head and has trouble finding hats so I'm hoping this is just a genetic predisposition to having a big head.

well if that's the case I'd say you have absolutely nothing to worry about, esp considering his development is bang on where it should be

Took little Mr to the doc and she's not worried, his development is on track and language ability better than what is expected for his age (sorry, proud mum boasting!). So it's just a big head! Doc will monitor it though.

Should really stop google searching and worrying myself!

Elfsmum, it's 52cm, I see from the graph that the average head size for a child his age is 46cm, so yeah, it's pretty big. Luckily he is a tall and solid boy so it doesn't look too weird!!

I compared my head size to a girlfriend's today and, yes my head seems big too! I think my bub has a double up of the big noggin gene.
