hi all,
is anyone else's almost 2 year olds having sleep issues? My son used to sleep really well both day and night and then over the last 6 months things have gotten worse and worse. The last week he has been waking every few hours and just screaming.

What he does is wake up crying and calling mummy, daddy etc. We go in and say 'it's ok' etc and then he would settle down. Sometimes you'd have to be firm and say 'go to sleep' and he would, but now neither of those works and he will only stay quiet if we stay in the room with him. This is not really what we want to be doing at 10, 12, 2 4 and 6 am.

We have a 7 week old baby but he has adjusted really well to that and has not shown any behavioural issues during the day. And the sleep probs are well before baby, just getting much worse now.

We have tried not going in at all but he just screams and screams for ages and gets so worked up he can't calm himself down. We thought he might be having nightmares and tried a nightlight - no change. We've moved bedrooms, no change.
He still has good sleeps by day 1 x 2-3 hour sleep and goes down happily at 7pm. He is still in his cot, we have his big bed in there and have thought about trying that but thought that it was best to wait till his sleeps were better (maybe in 12 years).

So...has anyone had experience with this or can recommend a good book or plan of action or toddler sedative (only half joking).

*madly waves hand* been through this!!!! What a blardy nightmare!!!!
We ended up ringing plunket in tears (well I was in tears and DP was in the backyard marching from one end to the other trying to keep his cool and not tear his hair out) after 4 hours in and out of his room trying to get him settled and they recommended letting him cry it out. Took another hour-ish before he went quiet, 25 minutes the next time, 5 minutes after that and bang it stopped happening. They said bedtime needs to mean bedtime so don't go in once they've been put down. I gotta say it was SO HARD!!! I hated every second of it but nothing else we were trying worked.
Just got the baby whisperer book though and she has some good ideas so maybe have a read through that??
Hope you find something that works hun!

babe - yep we might just have to do that but i'm not convinced it will work.

tysmummy - he is teething at the moment but the issue has been ongoing even when he is not teething. Can't wait till those final 4 are through!

My DD's sleeping improved vastly when we moved her out of her cot and into a big bed. We coincided the move with a rigid bedtime routine. Now at 7pm it is pj's, teeth, into bed, book, lights out and that's it. For the first two weeks if she woke in the night DH or I would lay on the trundler bed in her room, but then I realised we were creating a habit, so one day I said to DD, 'if you wake tonight Dad or I will stand outside your door, but we won't be laying on the bed anymore'. She accepted this and woke the next couple of nights and we stood at the door and after that she has slept 7-7 every night! She occassionaly has a dream that wakes her but this is rare. I would recommend the move to the bed, and remove the cot altogether. Be rigid with your routine and don't fall into habits which you don't want to continue long term.

lulu - thanks for that. I have been wondering if that would help as he wants to get in there. We are waiting for the trundler bed to arrive as i'm worried about him falling out. It should be this weekend hopefully and then we can try it. We have a pretty stable bedtime routine but he's definitely getting to the stage where he tries to get more stories, more milk, more everything really.
