    Posted: 26 March 2010 at 5:22pm
So husband got home from picking Thomas up from pre-school today and it turns out he's been banned from the sandpit! I had visions of him throwing sand at other kids etc.. but no. Thomas has been laying down in the sand eating great handfuls of it. EW. No more sand for him. I cant say i'm upset about it - i HATE sand lol.

Anything your kids have been banned from at kindy/preschool etc?

I wish Gabrielle would get banned from the sandpit lol She eats handful after handful of sand and what goes in must come out She hasn't been banned from anything (yet) though they did tell me that she is sooo loud they sometimes have to take her outside till she quietens down a bit so she doesn't wake the other kids.

I find this really sad - that a child would be "banned" from an activity just because they dont conform to someone elses belief about how to play in a sandpit. Oli used to eat sand in any sandpit he could get to...(playgroup, home, the beach...) but he has grown out of it now. I would never stop him playing in a sandpit because of it, but explain to him that it was going to hurt his bottom coming out and he figured it out for himself!

I think its policy in most places, as its a health and safety issue (just playing devils advocate here). But ew sand! Surely there are nicer things, like Playdough to eat?

Hmmm I wonder why its a health & safety thing? I would probably rather he ate sand than playdough with all the colour and stuff in it!

i too find it sad that he has been banned. could they not instead perhaps help him find different ways to play in the sand pit? instead of using their energy in keeping him out! there is so much learning to be had in the sand pit.

I find this really sad too.

The teachers are there to educate your child, and they should be showing him different ways of playing in the sandpit.   And I agree with Bizzy, there are so many learning opportunities that kids can get from the sandpit and after all it is the teachers job to teach children, not alienate them from an activity because they aren't doing it properly.

I also think it's really sad that he got banned from the sandpit- it actually seems quite mean when the other kids are having fun in there to tell 1 kid that they can't go in (good luck to them enforcing it).

Ella loves playing in it at daycare and I am sure some of it goes into her mouth but I don't care. She also has developed the habit of removing her clothes and then jumping naked into it and rolling around

Is the sand pit uncovered? They may be concerned as to who visits outside hours (cats or maybe teens etc) that may leave yucky things in the sand...but why not just teach that is isn't good for people to eat sand??

:0) BOTH my kiddies eat sand.  The daycare girls asked if it bothered me and it doesn't, they eat it at home too and dirt.  BLA!

As for being banned from anything - I've banned Daniel from eating banana's  :) if there are 6 in the bowl he will eat all 6 in a day.

Kindy is rural and I hate to think what goes in that sand after hours >< They've tried to teach him since he was allowed to go when he started that sand isnt for eating - but he'll sneek in and eat it when they're not looking - completely gross! He's very very constipated now because of the sand eating - honestly, before they stopped him going in, his poo was so tight and crumbly the poor little thing was crying because he couldnt go.

They've given him other fun things to do to help out instead of playing in the sand. He likes to take care of the kids who are smaller than him, so he'll go get toys, push them around in the walkers etc etc. He was a bit miffed on the first day but once he discovered all the fun things he could do other than being in there, he's been fine.
It honestly doesnt bother me - i'd rather my little man be able to go to the toilet instead.

Lol @ the bananas, thomas is like that with his museli bars! If clever daddy leaves the container at the edge of the bench (what is it with males doing that?) Thomas has been known to eat the entire container - that's over 20 bars. EEK!

i think that by law they have to cover the sandpit - health and safety regulations! so i hope it isnt left open!

if he is eating that much sand that it is constipating him then maybe there is another issue... i know lots of kids will eat some sand and dirt, but that much!

Oh man, I used to eat so much dirt that it would make me physically sick apparenly. Once I grew out of that, it was chalk. Boxes of the stuff :P
Its crazy as tho, if it was a little bit then yea, i would be a bit concerned about them banning him - I should really have said in my first post about how much it actually was! my bad.

Arianne sometimes eats the sand. But never been banned from it, I dont think any child would ever been banned from a sand pit.

Its all about teaching the children not to eat the sand.

The sand pit at her daycare is covered all the time only the kiddies can get in there and its sand it will get everywhere. It does give her bad nappy rash when it comes out.
