For the ladies on here with GD I need some advice.
I did the test Wednesday morning last week and heard from my MW by 2pm on the Thursday. She said my records had been sent over (but didn't say to where). She also thought I would have heard from someone already with an appointment. It is now Sunday lunch time and I still have not heard from anyone.
I am trying to stick to the foods and amounts my MW suggested over the phone but am not sure if I am doing it right. I am still not over the flu from 3 weeks ago and the change in diet has left me feeling like I want to be sick most of the time. Although I am a little better today.
My questions are the following. If you can give me an idea hopefully I will know what I am in for. DH doesn't really understand and I am freaking out a bit.
1 How long did it take you to hear from someone or get an appointment?
2 How did the diet change make you feel?
3 Who did you see and where?
4 How often are you seen?
5 What changes did it make if any to where you gave birth and your birth plan.

*lurker in*

Were you aware that being ill can affect your body's ability to process sugar? Even just a simple cold causes your body to produce hormones that throw your blood sugar out of whack. Were you sick with the flu during or right before you did the tests?

I guess what I'm getting at is: are they sure you have GD? I was horribly ill with consecutive colds for about 2.5 months and was just spewing glucose in my urine and feeling really ill after I ate sugar. As soon as I got better, my body settled down and glucose in urine went back to normal.

Might be worth doing another test once you've been well for a couple weeks if that's the case.

May be completely offbase, in which case you can ignore me!

Hi Cinderella
Sorry you've had that result ... know the feeling. I was diagnosed with borderline GD at about 36 weeks. My initial polycose test was ok (the one at 28 weeks) but because I was so huge (I'm actually really small but man did I have a big bump), and family history of diabetes, my MW sent me for a GTT at 36 weeks. I was guttered with the result, but I knew there was nothing I had done to get it, it's just the luck of the draw really. To answer your questions;
1. I heard from a nurse at the diabetes clinic the next day and I saw them within the week (I was at 36 weeks though)
2. Diet change was fine - just had to be careful to eat really low GI food (FYI yoghurt (sweetened) has really high sugar levels!).
3/4. I saw the diabetes nurse at the hospital outpatient clinic. I saw her only a couple of times but had to phone my blood sugar results in weekly. Also saw the obstetrician at the hospital for an assessment (about 39 weeks) and she booked for an induction later that week.
5. Changes to birth plan - I had planend to have a hospital birth so that didn't change. I was booked for an inudction at 39 weeks (they usually don't let gestational diabetics go over 38 weeks). I was lucky and went into labour on my own (with a bit of help from my midwife) whilst in hosptial waiting to be induced! So I spent my whole labour in hospital. The worst part was having to monitor my own sugars whilst in labour and in the middle of contractions - my DH was too scared to do it and my MW wouldn't!

I was ultra careful with my diet and controlled it well. Make sure you eat low GI food (like Vogels toast (no jam!), basmati rice and lots of protein). Porridge a good breakfast option or eggs, 'lite' yoghurts etc, almonds, lots of veges (go easy on the fruit), cheese. I found snacks the hardest - no biscuits and had been craving oranges!
Make sure you ask your MW about expressing colostrum around 38 weeks - they give it to your baby as soon as they are born as an extra boost as they are used to higher levels of sugar.
Try not to stress, it's controllable, touch base with your MW tomorrow and maybe call the diabetes clinic at your local hospital in the morning.
Good luck, stay well

Thanks for the advise ladies.

Molly cat- I am suspecting it maybe have played a part but I ws almost over it by the second test. If it was caused by that then diet alone will be fine.

Buntingsmum- I have stuck to what I should eat. I hadn't put any weight on this pregnancy. I was carrying extra to start off with. Since the diet change I have lost 2 kg in 4 days. I don't eat alot of fruit, no sugar, almost no snacks and biscuits etc. I eat really healthy as it is. Apart for limiting carbos there is not much more I can change I would have thought.

Well still have not heard from anyone.

Yep sounds like you are doing all the right things! That's the annoying thing about GD - I was really healthy too and it just didn't seem fair!
At this stage I imagine that all the diabetes clinic would do would be to get you to monitor your blood suagrs to check that your diet is controlling the levels. If it's not, they look at insulin but they would get you to monitor first. Was your positive result high?. If not (like mine) should be easy to control by diet.
I'd call you MW ask who she sent stuff to and call them yourself - the squeaky wheel gets the oil! I definitely understand you wanting to see someone and get more info etc.

Well just got the call. Strange thing is the fasting result was really high and the second was only just over. Seeing someone Thursday morning. Delivery will have to be at Auckland which is a lot further than the 2 minute drive to Waitakere but she is pretty convident I will be able to controll it just with diet and can transfer after birth to Waitakere to be closer to home.

Cinderella - i was the same didnt have to change much in diet. i did end up going on insulin as diet along didnt control levels.
Keep stress free which i know is hard to do.
Hot days and colds dont help levels.
I have been having burgen weight management bread and that helps 4 breakfast.
Summer is horrible as u have to control how much fruit u eat and i love my fruit. I fill up on veg at night. Edam cheese is a better option. U should see a dietician and they will show u how to read labels - look at carbs/sugars. Oh and if it 99% fat free check the sugar content!!!!!
Glad u got appointment, oh and take someone with u, so they can get the info. Helps to have the other person to remember too and helps them to understand.

Good Luck

Thanks Tiger, roo. I don't eat alot of fruit. Don't have fruit or sugary drinks. Eat alot of vegies and salad already. Plus I do check to sugar in 99%fat free. I am looking at carbs now. Someone said no more than 30g per meal so if I have a snack I am choosing options that have less than this. I guess I will find out on Thursday how well I am doing when they do my sugar levels.

Thanks for all of the advise. Seeing MW today so will have to check if she will still be able to deliver or not.
