OK, so Ella goes to bed at 7- has dinner at 5.30, milo at 6.15 followed by shower or bath and then we read a couple of books in bed until 7 and then its lights out.

Normally she would go to sleep staight away, but lately has been lying in bed chattering away for an hr (she is talking away at the moment). She is perfectly happy in bed and doesn't get out.....but it is driving me nuts, why won't she go to sleep.

She still has a nap around midday and will sleep from between 2-3 hrs (11.30-2.30) and I am trying to take her to the part/playground/swimming etc in the afternoon to tire her out. But am wondering if I should be waking her early from her sleep? Part of me thinks I should, but I do hate waking a sleeping child (particularly as a lot of time I am always tired); but  I don't want to put her to bed later than 7 as I do enjoy having my evenings to myself.

What would you do? Would you wake her up early from her nap or just leave her to chatter away in the evening and just try and ignore it.

If she is just chatting and not wanting to get out of bed or screaming for you etc then I would just leave her. Spencer often talks for ages to himself as well, he seems to run through all his vocab as part of his wind down. I just leave him to it so it doesn't ruin my evening at all, actually makes me laugh sometimes when I can hear him saying "well done bubba" and doing his version of counting "1,2 4, 6, 8, 10".
Spencer has his nap from around 1 till anytime between 2- 5.30pm (if it gets to 5.30 I wake him up!) and he still goes to bed at 7pm so I wouldn't think that you need to wake her earlier if she is getting up at 2.30pm anyway.

That sounds like good advice to me.  I've definitely noticed that Jimmy is tending to stay awake and talk to himself for longer as the days have been getting longer. Last summer it didn't bother him, he'd be out to it soon after 7pm without fail - but this year is a different kettle of fish!

Also, I wonder if they just need longer to wind down as they get older? I almost always need to read a book for a while after getting into bed, just until my own thoughts stop whizzing around in my head .

We have 1,2,6,7,8,9,10 in this house.

I know he knows the other numbers, but they aren't part of his counting!!

Jakes sleeps 1-anywhere from 3-5pm - I only wake him if its gets too close to 5pm as he has dinner around then .... but hes not in bed til closer to 8pm now (used to be 7pm). We decided to move his bedtime out a bit (goes into his room for books at 7.30pm) and keep the long day nap, as I really need the break during the day now with Morgan.

But if shes happy talking, I'd just leave her for now.

We get 1,2,3,6,7,8,9 usually .... but he can do 1,2,3,4 when pointing to things - or 1,2,3,5 (when theres 3 things). And sometimes he goes backwards?!

Joel has started this young then! He has been doing this for 2-3 weeks now, it normally takes him 1-1.5 hrs to go to sleep after I put him in bed. I just leave him as he sounds happy and is normally chatting and singing and banging the side of the cot.

I've had to shorten my 2 year 3 month old Daughter's day sleep. She was also having up to three hours, but then would wake at 2am bright as a button! Now I just let her sleep for no more than an hour to hour and a half. She is back to sleeping though. Could be a similar issue.

I should have said earlier - Jake has phases of talking for a bit too .... since we can't hear him from the lounge and hes happy I just leave him. Most nights he's out in minutes, but before we moved his bedtime out later he did used to talk or call out if he wasn't tired enough.

His daycare are surprised at how much he sleeps in the 2-3.5yr olds room .... apparently most only do an hour, and the parents want them up after an hour or so anyway, so they sleep well at night. Jake sleeps like a log so I'd rather he had a good sleep at dc, but he is up early in the morning so I guess you can't have it all!

thanks guys. Yesterday she had a slightly shorter sleep (her choice) and I didn't hear a word out of her at the bedtime.....but still think I might just leave her to it, as I do enjoy the long break during the day (and I am sure once the new baby comes it will be great).

Nikki- Ella has a really long sleep at home, but the most daycare can get out of her is an hr (on those days she is out like a light at bedtime).

DD1 is exactly the same - bed at 7 and talks/sings/"reads" for ages - sometimes it is almost 9pm. Sometimes we go in and tell her to go to sleep, but she will eventually if we leave her.

I do get sick of hearing it - especially as she prattles constantly during the day too.

Thankfully she often sleeps in late, so she is still getting an ok amount of sleep.
I assume she will go to sleep faster once she drops her day sleep, but at the moment I'd rather have the peace in the day. I'm just thankful she doesn't get out of bed!

My son is exactly the same - in fact I was just talking with Dh about it last night, trying to decide what to do about it. We have decided to leave it at the moment, as I really enjoy the 2hrs peace that I get (both asleep at the same time), and if I tune out the yabbering then it doesn't bother me...

Less sleep during the day means that he will fall asleep quicker at night, but he is hard work before bedime. He needs the sleep still!

We had the same problem here, I moved his bed time from 7 to 7:30 and that seemed to fix it. Maybe something to think about? Otherwise just turn the tv up!

Yeah Jake sleeps less at daycare - 1.5-2 hours vs 2-3.5 at home .... he was doing a good 2 hours there but now that hes in with the big kids where they sleep in the same room as they play he usually only does 1.5 hours I think (still the biggest sleeper in there tho!).
You might find moving her bedtime out 30mins helps. Jakes gradually got later til now its closer to 8pm.

Can you just shut the door and ignore it? I give my kids a 5 minute massage before bed and I find they pretty much go straight to sleep, if I don't it takes them a bit longer to wind down. Possibly worth a try if the talking is too much for you?
