    Posted: 10 May 2012 at 3:51pm
With my DD I had retained placenta after the birth. The placenta looked whole but obviously wasn't. It took 2 weeks of agonising cramps, passing clots and bleeding for it to be finally figured out and I ended up going into hospital for a D&C.

This time, my midwife said I am likely to get it again and I am SO SCARED! She said I'll have a controlled 3rd stage, where she'll inject me to make my uterus contract and it will be 'very painful'.

Does anyone else have experience with retained placenta the 2nd time around? I need reassurance!!!

Hey denny,
I don't have experience with a retained placenta, but I did get the injection your talking about (due to having a rather long and tiring 2nd stage).
Just to reassure you, the relief from baby finally making his appearance was bigger than any pain.
I didn't feel the needle, didn't feeling anything beyond mild cramping (didn't even feel MW stitch up my epistomy without a local!).
It's could have just been the relief after a scary experience...or maybe having my little boy in my arms...but it just wasn't that bad.
But I'm guessing your MW has to say it, as everyone has their own experience with it.

Did she say why it would be very painful? I've had the injection 3 times and it's never been painful

I think she meant the contracting uterus would be painful because it contracts so fast?

That's weird then cause mine never hurt, I had far far far worse BH than what it felt like when my uterus contracted to expel the placenta

I had a fully retained placenta with my first (even after having the jab I never had anymore contractions). So with babies 2, 3 & 4 I opted with a managed 3rd stage and what contractions there were, were NOTHING on labour contractions

I had retained products after the gremlins even after having the jab, everything all looked fine until I was still bleeding heavily at 5 weeks postpartum and then passed a massive chunk of membranes. I didn't have any problems after lil miss tho, so while having had it once does increase the odds of having it again, it's not a given.

I've had the jab all three times, and will most likely have it again with this bub as I've now had 2 consecutive postpartum hemorrhages, and I agree with the others, it didn't make it any more painful. If anything, it was better as the placenta was delivered sooner than if I'd not had the jab.

I had the jab as well, for all the good it did me, i had a complete retained placenta and ended up having to have a D&C.

Didn't feel a thing with the injection, contractions were a bit sore (but I think that might have been down to the syntocin still being pumped into me!) but no where near as bad as the contractions for baby :-)
