Now my bubba girl is advanced in sooo many ways (and this is truly not just a mummy brag here) BUT she has driven me nuts lately - she will NOT learn or say her colours or shapes...and no she is not colour blind as we did wonder for a second...she will tell us the light needs to go green so we can go etc....and recognises the difference between green and red etc etc....and if really pushed she will pick a red m and m over a yellow one when asked to show which one is red...but to say the colour? NO GO.....

EG - if I show her a Brown Rectangle - and ask what colour it is = she tells me "its a door" "its wood"
If I ask her what colour the shirt is she will say "it has buttons and long sleeves"
If i say what shape is an apple - she says "it is an apple mummy...yummy - please i have some?"
get the picture???

How the heck do i get her to learn her colours when she basically is *skipping over* them....and will describe everything in detail - EXCEPT by actual colour or shape!!!

Her language skills are exceptional, she knows numbers letters and her memory is fantastic (i think by the way she does certain things that she has inherited a photographic memory as I do too and wonder if this has affected the colour type learning?) We havent put a lot of effort into "teaching" per se as she normally just picks up things...but this is annoying me now....any suggestions????

BTW she is 2 and a half now

Charlotte knows her colours and shapes but won't say them either, however she will point something out if I say which is the triangle, which is pink.. lil minxes...

I was really suprised today at my coffee group that NONE of the kids knew their colours apart from Tom. He is the youngest by 6 months so the others were ranging from 2.5 years to 3 years...and didnt know their colours. i was shocked. tom has known them for months and shapes.

I'd say you are right in thinking that she is just skipping past them. I'll bet she knows them but just cant see the point of humouring Mummy.

And I know what you mean about the photographic memory.....Tom just needs to see something once and he remembers it forever

ok I have got some relief from this now...thanks guys - I truly thought she shoudl have it by now...

Piper - i have a real photographic memory - which is a blessing and a curse at times....

she may know it is frustrating me (us) and be playing us but i dont think so...

this am we were reading old mcdonalds farm and got through it all then i said "what colour are the ducks?" - silence. "what colour is the sun?" - silence - then told her it was yellow etc...she points to them and says "duck same as sun" ARGH!!!!

she gets it!

With Tom's memory (its either super good or we lose so much as we grow up) but he can sit there with his books (even new ones) and "read" them out loud turning the page at just the right point. and if he skips a page, he still "reads" the right words. bloody impressive...you could even fool yourself he was actually reading it. I can see this being an issue at school when he starts memorising things rather than learning them

Will keep an eye on it for next few weeks and see if the daycare pressure makes her give in LOL!
