    Posted: 28 July 2009 at 9:10am
My 3 year old has been having what I think are night terrors for about a month now. I think she has prob had two nights without them.

Its so frustrating cause up until this week she would pretty much settle after one and go back to sleep for the remainder of the night, but now she has been unsettled for a few hours at a time, asking for cuddles etc.

I guess I am after some suggestions on how to break the cycle or prevent them.

Any help would be appreciated.....

Hi,
Our little boy had terrible night terrors for about 4 months after no.2 arrived. They are so awful, I really feel for you. It's a very hard thing to deal with because it is actually a sleep condition like sleep walking. Some of the articles I read on it suggested gentle rousing them before they have the terror (only works if they have them at the same time tho) so to change their sleep pattern.
That she seems unsettled by the terrors might suggest that they are actually nightmares as (just like sleep walking) you can't remember a terror once awake.
Treasures had an article on night terrors and nightmares a few months ago so it might be worth looking at their site and the sleep store is quite a good resourse too.
I hope she settles down soon. Good luck!

Can't help on kids night terrors..only the grown up ones! My DH has them BADLY - like the ones on docos where they film the sleepwalkers/night terrors. He was about about 10 times last night!!

Best thing for him is to reassure him (even if not fully awake) that he's fine and I always tell him where he is, as that seems to be a trigger (e.g. - "You're OK, we're at home, in bed" or "It's OK, we're at that Hotel in Nelson" etc).

I feel for you! Good luck!
