 Topic: Birth photography

Hi all, I'm kicking off a photography business (don't worry this isn't a spam lol) with a primary focus on weddings but I've been looking at other areas also, partly to see where I could branch out, partly out of plain old curiosity. I came across birth photography, which to be honest had never occurred to me as something people would look to a professional for. I know when I was preggers I didn't even want my hubby to watch me too closely, let alone have a camera present for the birth lol!  Did anyone here have a photographer present when they gave birth? Or is it something you would consider when/if you have a baby?

Actually, kind of? Which, if you knew me, would come as a bit of a shock - I didn't get my wedding videoed because watching a video of myself would be more painful than it was worth!
But the first couple of photos I have of my son (which the midwife took just after he was born) are very special, and so when I had my daughter I gave the camera to the student midwife and told her to snap away and I'd delete what I didn't want. She took some gorgeous photos, and they're very special.
I would *maybe* consider a photographer is I had another baby... but I'd have to really like their photos to go to the bother. Otherwise, I'd just get someone like another student midwife to snap away, rather than add an extra to the room. I know some of the 'professional' birth photos I've seen are no more special than the ones the student took for us (although I have seen some amazing ones done by an obviously skilled photographer too)

Hopes, I completely get what you mean - my birth ended up being a bit of a shambles with my hubby hustled out of the hospital the moment I was off the delivery bed so the first photo of our son is 1 I took a few hours later. I would have loved to have a photo of him, myself and hubby immediately after he was born purely for sentimental reasons. My plan was for the midwife to take the photo (again, didn't eventuate), but it never crossed my mind in the planning stages or afterwards to book a professional.
I've been googling my little heart out, and I've seen some stunning professional shots. I've also come across some that, like you mentioned, are on par with photos taken by other attendees. I can't imagine booking a photographer if we have another baby, but I will definitely make sure my camera is ready and waiting for the midwife next time! :-)

Hiya my sons 22days old and I did have a professional photographer present. She had previously captured my nephews delivery 3weeks before so I seen the photos she took and they were amazing. It captures that special moment and if I have another child I would definitely want one again. Birth photography is an amazing idea and although you think you don't want anyone else being present and seeing your bits when your actually in labour that all gets thrown out of the window :)

It was more having my bits recorded that I wasn't so keen on - but as DD was a water birth, you couldn't see a thing, just her coming out of the water.

My birth partner snapped plenty of photos throughout my labour, only for me though, but i love looking at them. Would definitely do that again, but i don't know about having a stranger doing it!

Yep, definitely! I personally wouldn't want to see pictures of the baby coming out but I reckon the photographer could capture some of the emotion and joy when the baby is first plonked on you. Be amazing to have those.

I did birth photography for my bestie (im a budding photographer and she wanted me there as an extra support person anyways so i snapped away when i wasnt needed..) ended up being am emergency Csect, but the 30 hours i was there supporting her it was cool to get those pics, and i even got to go with her to NICU to meet her baby for the first time in the incubator and got that on camera too :) i think that after such a traumatic labour and birth, seeing the photos after helped her make sense of it all, and see things she barely remembered happening since it was all a blur in the craziness..healing in a way i guess?? but yes, i think if you have a passion for it, it would be something lots of people would want! :)
